Coach Search Options after Autry

Please define who these “athletic office” members are so I can toilet paper their front yard.
Watch our for the Ring cameras. Makes Teepeeing tough now days. Don't ask me how I know.

Yeah that's flat out ridiculous.

Gerry is like talking to a brick, Red is very outgoing.
Gerry doesn't give off warm and fuzzy's but he is a good communicator and is very spirited when he wants to send a message. I'm hoping very much he isn't the guy. However, I think he could do well raising NIL (provided we don't tank the first year if it comes to that).

Whether I’m a nut for liking the idea of Gerry (not a casual fan like mentioned earlier, 30 year STH), or you’re a nut for thinking that’s a horrible idea… Fact is no one here REALLY knows for sure how any one of these potential hires might do.

I assure you, someone in 1976 said “why did they hire that doofus from within? Why didn’t they hire _____?” No one knew it would grow to 30k+ capacities within a football stadium, many final fours and a National Championship.
All we can do is wait and see and hope for the best. If it don’t work, then we can complain to our hearts content.

And if this goes on another week or two, will we hit 1000?
best/most insightful post in this whole monstrosity of a thread!

I think (no confirmation) that SU might be concerned over the girlfriend’s age, that she was apparently a student when they started dating and that they (again apparently) have a kid and aren’t married.

Colleges these days are all about appearances and avoiding scandals.

I believe he was what we were looking for and we are what he was looking for. The only reason it didn’t happen was that he failed the vetting process. It is the only thing I can think they would explain this sequence of events.
I'm sorry, this is absolutely preposterous. I'm 20 pages behind but the takes being thrown out here at this point are getting wild.

I think I used up all my anxiety last night. Tonight I'm kinda numb. I'll either be mildly disappointed or kind of excited and then I will move on with my life until the season starts. Cautious optimism at the beginning of the season will either proceed to true interest or complete indifference. Yay?

I don’t think things are the same for assistant coaches.

Think of the impact Juli Boeheim had on the community, and in some ways still does.

I am sure BH’s girl is great but is she ready to be a community leader? As an aside, Adrian and his wife seemed to not even try and be community leaders. I suspect SU would like to bring in someone who has a wife and who is willing to be visible in the community.

At least somewhat like JAB and Juli were.
If we're really upset about BH getting with his wife when he was 32 and she was 22, then let's try to imagine our own legendary coach meeting his wife when he was 50 and she was 27. Oh wait, we dont have to imagine that

I’d take Luke in a heartbeat
With his help building a championship program and developing their innovative modern offense, Murray could be Hodgson 3 years ago before his head coaching stints. We could be getting him before he blows up elsewhere. Definitely has a high ceiling. Like Hodgson helped Oats build Buffalo and Alabama, Murray helped rebuild UConn. Though besides the proven HC experience, I don’t know if Murray has BH’s shark recruiting reputation.

So to go in another direction, I am no fan of Gerry getting the job. But he does bring more to the table than Autry did.
1. He is more enaging and likeable, which helps to raise funds.
2. He understands the players. He is more of a players coach.
3. He has a certain "we can win this thing" quality and makes his players believe it.
4. He was more loved at SU, one of the most loved players ever. Because of that is why more seats will be filled even though many on here say they won't come. They will in the end.
5. If it doesn't work at first, he will make adjustments.
6. if he is wrong, he will own it.
My friends lives there, is a Siena guy and this is a paraphrase of what he and I have seen.

re #2 this part is accurate, he really does understand the players, BUT he really is NOT a traditional players coach. If you listen to his players he's yelling and cajoling them nonstop very non touchy feely type, very Boeheimesque - I'm NOT your friend. BUT, off the court he very much has a connection is a connected person/coach with them way above and beyond JB,so he's the best of both worlds which is why in my initial push for him this was part of the reason.

The Siena kids interviewed were like, I know he's doing it for me/has my best interests at heart so I keep that in mind in practice as he's in my grill all over me (or words to that effect). I have zero doubt, zero he'd do well here.

If they can't get financials in order *with* football money coming in, then this is probably the start of the death of Cuse athletics barring major changes. I've seen UConn brought up as a way to say Cuse is still better off, but they still were able to hire a very good football coach after losing Mora. So obviously things aren't as bad as some want them to be over there.

The money is coming in, it's going to football and some to bball. Uconn hired a guy that absolutely no one else wanted that's why he went there, Candle has been at Toledo for years and hasn't gotten a sniff at a Power 5 job.

Syracuse and the Admin understand that fball drives the bus, they could easily cut half the football NIL resources and have Hodgson here in a heartbeat but it would make zero sense. SU has to continue to try and cultivate additional outside NIL dollars and the fanbase has to understand the fiscal reality of where the University is.

This whole situation makes less sense by the minute. I don’t understand how we went from Hodgson being a done deal for the past year to bringing in GMac so we can also grab Ryan freaking Blackwell. I also don’t understand the whole “none of the players have offers except Nait George” Colgate doesn’t want Donnie Freeman? I’m assuming what’s really happening is those guys aren’t being offered comparable money at the p4 level and are hoping Cuse will keep the gravy train rolling for them.

Finally the talk about Hodgsons fiancée is bordering on weird/creepy. If someone sounded the alarm on him because of her then they didn’t really want him to be the coach here in the first place.
BH was a year or more in the making - at any point they never considered the NIL situation? I have no words.

It’s not hard to imagine why they agreed to fund the $1 billion water treatment facility they will need for the company. That’s a drop in a bucket for them. I guarantee, Brian Blair will be on the phone with them the first week he takes over. It’s malpractice if he doesn’t.
Micron is not the answer. The important "fact" here is that Micron's philanthropy is aimed at supporting educational and workforce development. Micron and SU already have a relationship spearheaded by Haynie. It revolves around academia and curriculum development to help train the workforce Micron will require.

We are not likely to see financial support beyond those goals. It's not what they do. They haven't done it for Boise St. It's a different culture.

I can guarantee the school doesn’t give one flying puck

I agree, but when you say the university has to “cultivate additional outside NIL dollars”, what the hell have they been doing for the past four years? It’s always the same at SU, they’re always 4-5 years behind the curve. It’s their MO.

This seems like 5 dimensional chess where GMac will be head coach

First, even though GMac was JB’s choice to replace him, he couldn’t jump over Red because Red was Associate HC with more experience, plus other factors

Red is given the job with basically no other candidates being considered. He was also given little resources or has the strategic mind to develop a program in the new world of college basketball. He fails and is fired.

GMac, in parallel, goes to Siena and turns the program around, albeit at a significantly lower conference. He’s cut his teeth to show he can coach, at least at a lower level.

Next, everyone is clamoring to go outside the family. Here’s a guy from upstate NY that grew up a Cuse fan who has successfully turned around two programs and feels like the obvious choice. Talks, if they are happening, somehow fall apart, even though the guy is busy prepping his team for the biggest game of his life.

Now there’s no other candidates being considered except GMac. So he’ll get the job he should have gotten 3 years ago.

Seems like a masterful plan.

We need to become a football school to help basketball get back to the GLORY DAYS.

So hoops fans are screwed unless the university finds a healthy landing spot in 2030.
