Coach Search Options after Autry

I don't like the cut of the Lally jib
I think there have been missteps at times, but anyone donating what they have would do the same thing and I don’t blame them. Nature abhors a vacuum and when you don’t have strong leadership saying this is how we are doing this, how can we expect a different result? They are important donors and should be recognized as such. They should have input on how their $$$ is spent. But they should not be running athletics dept. And I am not sure they are trying to.

No way he turns it down, but after not getting enough consideration last time around he might want to savor it a bit and make everyone sweat.

I could see myself doing something petty in that situation, like telling my agent to do the math and add enough money to the deal to make every paycheck end in 0,381.78.
IF he plans on overturning a ton of the roster he better not savor it too long. Lot of work to do.

Technically correct we couldn't officially offer BH for him to officially turn down because he was still under contract and coaching in the NCAA tournament.
We can certainly offer, it would just have an effective date of when the USF season ended.

Odds Goodman exaggerated something he was told by his sources?

Here is my take.

I believe wholeheartedly that despite having been involved in a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiations with Syracuse, the Hodgson camp got the impression that him landing the job wouldn't be a slam dunk. That either we weren't going to offer, or we had him behind other candidates we valued more.

Prior to yesterday's loss, Hodgson and USF were riding high and had been on a sustained run of kicking butt, so this was probably not well received.

So rather than get egg on the face, they got out in front to manage the narrative from a PR perspective. SU didn't turn Hodgson down... HE turned THEM down. And a vague reason was given -- i.e., Syracuse couldn't meet our financial demands, because we are a HOT COMMODITY.

That's why when Hodgson got asked about it in the press conference on Wednesday, he didn't have a comment. That press leak probably wasn't from him, it was from his camp.

Goodman [who I don't hold in high regard as a sports journalist] then took that statement about not enough $$$ and read into it.

When the reason was likely BS to begin with.

MY OPINION ONLY -- Syracuse liked Hodgson, but liked a couple of other candidates similarly. And Hodgson was more expensive due to his larger support staff requirements than the others, who they rated as about the same. So why pay more when you can get somebody you think is just as good for less overhead?

Do they even realize how hard it is to get a drink after the game without walking downtown?
Here's a great opportunity for the university solve a problem and boost NIL using the endowment. They can use it on infrastructure. Build a baller banquet space overlooking the Dome. Probably means turning a lot into a multi-story garage with a top floor or two that's an event space, but could also be renovating something else and changing the top floor.

I'm talking floor to ceiling windows looking out at the Dome.

The university can use it for general fundraisers so it's not even sketchy, but they can lease it to an NIL fund before and after every game for $1, and let the fund charge $15 a drink or whatever and rake it in. Make sure everyone understands what % of it is flowing to NIL.

Hoops coach can appear before most home football games, Fran can appear before a handful of home basketball games, players can make appearances after games, alums can make appearances.

You can schedule it or do surprises and let the rumors flow - you never know who you might run into!

It's also a fun play on fans saying they'd like to buy a player or coach a beer to thank them for their heroics, you're buying them an ice cold brew of NIL.

It's also a great way to start a pipeline of donors, you get them to spend maybe $30-100 on something fun, then try to get them for a recurring small donation, and go from there. People make connections, now they want to hang out with their new friends, now there are opportunities to run more events and trips.

If it is GMAC, I will be happy even though I want a more seasoned successful coach. I didn’t want to have someone in where we have to be patient if they don’t do well right away. I want a home run hire - someone who hits the ground running and wins right away. This might be GMAC, but I think he’s a bigger risk.

I fully expect us to offer GMac and can’t imagine him turning us down unless he gets a better offer (unlikely). Siena doesn’t have the money that St Louis or So Fla have to offer him a long term, high $ contract. If he comes back, there is certainly no guarantee Siena will make the tournament next year. He’s currently as hot as he’s likely to ever get as long as he’s at Siena.

I think you just hit it with Gerry's game yesterday making things a little more complicated for our decision makers. As I wrote privately, the thing that scares me with Gerry is Doty and Anthony playing together. You just have to have better 3 pt shooters than that. There probably isn't a pt guard we can get that would make up for their limitations. Now, they could improve but I wouldn't count on it.
He cannot and should not be hamstrung by KA. There is no reason they cannot have both of them if there is no favorites played. I strongly suspect coach would not even want to come here if they have to be held hostage. I strongly believe Gerry would be one of them. KA can develop, however if he is a liability in a persisting fashion on either end of the floor whether that be related to stagnated offensive flow and certainly from a defensive standpoint he needs to sit. He also needs to be told what to do. No one is bigger than the team. I hope Gerry comes here if he is the best coach possible, he cannot be told what to do or have preconceived concerns someone yapping while playing daddy ball. We have already gone through that. And by the way, I I believe the highest ceiling possible for KA, potentially would be BB unequivocally. Not completely similar however serious and massive deficiencies on both sides. And the latter gentleman was lethal. Super killer kid as well. Kiyan seems that way as well.

Let’s hope Kiyan gets a growth spurt and gets big enough to play the three. That would help. I said in another thread that Doty does a lot of really good things, but three point shooting is not his strength. He was 3-12 yesterday. If you give Kiyan 12 three point shots, he’ll more than likely make at least three.

It felt really good to hear Blair clear up the rumors around Syracuse basketball
Yeah and this is why instead of reacting like a 13 year old to rumors or unsubstantiated news that it does both the individual and this entire fanbase a favor if they just wait until a story has been validated. Clearly BH’s agent put out a BS story and it seems more likely we turned him down now and it was a face save.

I may or may not have been that 13 year old girl

Let’s see if Goodman retracts his earlier statement.
