Coach Search Options after Autry

I thought this community would be fun to interact with but we are a bunch of whiners and it’s annoying lol. We haven’t hired anyone yet and you all don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. We are going off of fake sources like Jeff Goodman. Let’s play this out and see.

What are you talking about? Multiple insiders have given insight into the dynamics at play.

So according to Samurai if he’s to be believed it’s between Gmac, Skinn, Holloway and Schertz (assuming he’s one of the mystery candidates) and possibly one other

I'm not typically a glass half-full kinda person, but I think most posters are viewing this all wrong.

Putting aside Autry's hire, we ended the season knowing we would need a new coach and luckily, there were some good young options out there.

McNamara was likely not in consideration initially, but his success this year cannot be ignored. He, of course, gets bonus points here for his time on The Hill (both as a player and coach). I think we all saw how hard his team played, and given the absolute half-azzed play and coaching we got as the season ended, that really resonates well too. We all know there are some negatives also (e.g., relatively little head coaching experience; comes from a tree of unsuccessful coaches and systems; Siena is the premier program in the MAAC [along with Iona]).

So we are either going to land a nice coach from outside of the program (my preference), or a hometown guy, with a winning track record, who seems to be on the rise.

The delta between basketball coaches is not nearly as big as many want to believe. Success is mostly a confluence of circumstances. I think whoever we get will be an improvement on where we are now, and that's what most important for the time being.

Great post and I want to add to that with the whole public perception aspect. It doesn’t matter, right now. It doesn’t matter if we hire Schertz or Gmac. If we hire Gmac and the public perception is JB influence, not enough $ and 4th choice. Who cares because if he gets the team to the tournament and we become a solid team again. None of that matters. The perception will change.

If Schertz is hired, same thing. Good public perception outside of SU, potentially negative aspects with the JB mafia, maybe some media and former players. But if he is successful, all of that goes out the window. If schertz puts together winning, fun to watch BB and the JB mafia continues to be negative. The fans will turn on them.

The only thing the fans and public perception care about is winning.

They need to name someone. Smart people on this board are starting to eat each other up over dumb stuff.
It is what it is at this point, as fans we just have to support what's next and move on.
Easy for me to say as a Bengal and Pirate fan, low expectations are part of my world.
I’m with you there. Syracuse and NY Giants fan here. It’s been rough. New coaches give me new hope.

I see that perspective and in my more optimistic moments, I agree. The problem is if people are only talking about giving NIL money so "their guy" gets the job. Then, they don't actually follow through. There are a lot of basketball alums who love to talk about this stuff and I never hear about them giving significant money.

And if I am really being honest with myself, a lot of this is simply a gut feeling. The thought of GMac sulking on the bench during a bunch of losses while the fanbase turns on him flashes through my mind a lot. I still believe he is a risky hire.

Oh, we're definitely whiners.

All very good points. The problem is we are 7 months from playing a game. We have to build a team through the portal. If gmac is the hire and things don't go well in the portal, it's going to be ugly.

People pointed to it already. To me the issue is JB. Still has an office at SU. What outsider wants to deal with that mess.
Cue the "there would be no program without JB" posts. I respect the hell out of what JB did here. But for all we know, someone else could have come in here and done a great job too. Or someone could have come in here around 2015 and we would be like Gonzaga or Florida right now. We just won't know until it happens.
