Love Autry as player and person, but he never seemed in control. Not of a press conference, game management, time outs, player substitution, player effort, sets, etc.

GMAC took a job at a place thought to recruit at and lifted it up in very short time. He managed the team and the roster and had his players playing hard for him.

At this point he has shown a lot more than Autry ever showed. I don’t know that he will succeed but no one knows who would or could. He has a chance, will apparently have the $$$ and we’ll see.

Meanwhile, I always had a bit of concern about BH after that story about his run in with Autry’s son. And he didn’t cover himself in glory with the recent leaking either. He may prove to be a great coach, but there are some red flags to me.

Lastly, while I grew up in CNY, I’m not blind to the fact that it is t everyone’s top destination. I was always worried about what would happen post-JB. But JB loved it at SU and seemingly never seriously came close to leaving. I would really not have loved someone coming to SU and using it as a stepping stone to get to SEC or somewhere else. I doubt we have to worry about that with GMAC.

All the best to him. I hope he pulls it off. Will be scary, but will be exciting to see what happens.

Exactly! I've met Red a few times. GREAT guy, but nothing ever screamed HC to me. IMO, he lacks the innate intensity and fire that most head coaches use as fuel. Red seems to be more of a beta personality, great for asst. coaches, but the great head coaches are demonstrably alpha personalities. I actually see those traits in GMac...hopefully, he can parlay them into a 5 seed next year.

Autry is a classic assistant and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is suited to be the guy in charge. Some people have it, some don't. Thinking Autry was HC material in the first place made no sense. Gmac definitely has that personality but a lot of guys do and not everyone is successful. We'll see if the positives he did at Siena outweigh some of the warning signs.

It means more money than any other candidate by a long shot. It means a fresh start with old money. It means unification between many factions. Gmac is the right choice given the very complex dynamics surrounding SU basketball. Personally i feel very strongly that unless there is an absolute 100 percent that one coach is significantly better than the other that talent trumps everything. JB was a great coach for many reasons but if you listen to him he will tell you that it was and almost always is about talent. In the old world you had to be a great recruiter and have a bag. Jim had a bag and in Hop and before him Rick guys that could really recruit. Once Rick left Gmac couldnt match is recruiting ability. That coupled with a couple of infractions and our talent dropped off the map. The end of Jims run was a nightmare as we all know but that is over. JB still and always will control a large portion of the donor base. They like and respect him. That doesnt ever change as long as they are all alive. Everyone including JW knew that Red was a stretch but it was impossible to go out of house with Jim leaving and it was impossible to hire anyone on staff other than Red. Simply put there wasnt any other choice. This time was different. New Ad new opportunity. Gmac having a great season which he had in spite of injuries and of course the duke game made it very hard to argue against him. Coupled with the support he has for NIL put him over the top.
He loves SU loves the area and will get the kids to play extremely hard. Gmac puts the work in and i think he understands talent, roster building, and most importantly has the IT factor which is great feel for the flow of a game. I think he gets us to the dance within two years and when that happens and the fans come back watch out. I'm all in supporting him.

Bench depth is usually a good thing; especially cheap bench depth.
