Coaching Candidates (My List)

Nice they could shoot the 3.
Would be nice to see how they defend.
Defense wins games.

Both Hodgson and Ben McCollum look like they're due for bigger things.
Hodgson as a young Nate Oats disciple is especially going to get big time offers.

Would be nice to see Sean Miller dropped from any serious discussion of anyone SU would ever want.
Strong coach...with scandals far worse than any Boeheim had under his tenure.
A big no.
The Orange can win without disgrace.

Unless I’m totally mistaken, his only scandals are now considered legal under the current college sports landscape. So why wouldn’t we want him?

A) The season is not over.
B) We’re down one of our best players
C) Our present coach has a very good class coming in next year.
D) Our best 3 pt shooter has lost it. Not all his fault.
E) He is a new head coach, give him a little learning time.
) There are more important issues locally and nationally that we need to work on.
G) Life goes on, enjoy your family !
A) For all intents and purposes it is; the only question is the depth of the crater
B) We were still awful when that player was healthy
C) That class might have a better chance of sticking with a new coach
D) Teams should have multiple shooters and plays to spring them; this is on the coach
E) So was GRob; both seem to have the same level of coaching acumen
) Yes, like Scott Shafer and ISIS
G) That's exactly what most fans are doing now, based on attendance.

I was reading through the first major thread when there was a lot of smoke around Fran. There are some really bad takes.

But I don't see 10 wins on this schedule. Certainly could happen since the ACC is a dumpster fire, but we've squeaked out wins against worse teams than we'll be facing. If the football team ends up with equal or more wins, then he has to go. The Dome will be a tomb next year and there will be a mass player exodus.
I was one of those horrible takes. Exactly why this board can't be trusted with anything!

Fun fact: Arkansas State has only made the tournament once all time and it was 25 years ago (despite having Norchad Omier for two years!). So if Hodgson gets them there this year he'll probably have a nice bidding war for his services.

Yeah, I'd love him here but running Red back another year when it's clear he's out of his depth (and maybe the buyout goes down next year?)... Dunno, but that sounds very Syracuse sadly.

I think the remaining season home game attendances could be the stick, however. JW may not have a choice if you can hear crickets in the dome.

Thanks for the post Red

What exactly is attractive about it right now besides the Melo Center and that we're in the ACC?
I think the fan base - still getting good crowds after a decade of bad basketball. We've historically travelled very well. I think a coach who know college basketball would know that he could have great support.

Proximity to recruits. I don't follow that much, but even CNY has produced high major recruits. We are close to a lot of major recruiting hotbeds.

I've used the example that we're Tennessee. We have a huge stadium that a good coach will fill. FSU just went 2-10 and looked like dog... all season and their recruiting is still pretty great.

The Melo Center has to be a bit dated at this point, is that even a selling point?

The ACC being horrible is an amazing opportunity for a program to step up and challenge Duke and Carolina.

I have a feeling we could compete with most schools NIL if we had a coach and program our fanbase was excited about. If I had $100,000 to give a year, I would not donate it with Red as the coach. If I'm wrong about NIL, then nothing else matters and the job is terrible. If I'm right, then we have the bones of a very good program that I think would be attractive.

Any connection with Mike Brown and Carmelo? I know he's more LeBrons guy. Good coach I assume he's getting another NBA job next year.

The allure of the job has taken a massive hit after the past 10 years.
Brands don't lose all their historical value in 10 years, but they can lose a fair amount of it, as recency is the most important factor.

Doesn't mean the job won't be attractive to some.

People throwing out names like Shaka Smart, Mark Few, and Doug McDermott are totally overvaluing the current value of our brand.

Stadium capacity still counts. Even with our attendance falling off a cliff this year, it's still one of the most lucrative home courts & programs in college.

But can we? Because we chose to stick with a 2-time offender, and he didn't lead us back to any sort of glory. He chased away our best assistant coach because he didn't want to honor the deal he made with his employer. And then he used his position to basically turn SU into a Boeheim Family AAU team.

30,000 seats for basketball on campus, and a city that really wants to support a winning team. Oh, and we sell beer on campus, and the 2nd most merch of any private school in the NCAA. So we got the bucks, despite this riding on the bus BS.

Just a side note - Almost everyone sells beer now, so that's nothing that makes SU special anymore.

I was in attendance for a lot of those 30,000 seat games. Electric, and we could get back there. But we might hit 20k once this season, and the Dome sure looks cavernous when it's empty. Football has also shown us this is a fair weather town for the casuals, so it's no guarantee they come right back.

As for beer on campus and merch, how does that appeal to a coach? And clearly we're not using that money towards the basketball program if we're bussing the team to Pitt, BC and NYC.

Local "fair weather fans" have kept SU in the top 2 in attendance nationally for a lot of bad years so far this century.
Only because other national programs play in capped arenas. We've been on the decline for the last 10 years

It’s going to royally suck when we keep Red after this season. Only to watch another team snatch up Hodgson and immediately turn it around. While we keep things the way they are and dig an even deeper hole to climb out of.

I wished we were more proactive and less reactive. It’s honestly not that difficult. Seems like 90%+ of us have it figured out already. Can we as a collective be the Athletic Director?
This is what’s gonna happen for sure. Coaching search’s can be tricky because some years there just isn’t any obvious guys out there . Hurley to UConn was perfect at the right time. Hodgson feels like that for us potentially. The fact that it’s Oats guy makes it even more perfect. Feel like this doesn’t come around very often. I wouldn’t be surprised if stays at Arkansas state one more year, but there’s no doubt he’s getting big time offers soon.

I do not agree. Your statement is incorrect.
Everyone one you saying I'm wrong. Take off your orange colored glasses. Nothing special about the program anymore. The one argument is there is a big crowd at the Dome. Go watch a game in a smaller arena (I've been to Hinkle it's amazing...people say the same thing about Assembly Hall and Cameron). Size isn't everything ;)

For the last decade making the tournament has been an accomplishment. So many programs have leaped frogged Cuse. Wake up.

We already have a Coach!!!

Is the Syracuse job opening really a better job opening than Miami.

For some yes, for others no. The fact that it probably isn't definitive for a clear majority, should tell you something about the current status of our job.
