Colgate Gameday...

Not sure we’re good enough at the X to win a national championship. Most of the top teams have very good FOGOs and better wing play. Based on his performance today and in a number of other games, Mullen doesn’t appear up for the job. I’ll gladly be proven wrong.
We’re good enough. Just look at the outcomes from The other games this weekend. have to play at a higher level with less turnovers and more discipline and intensity, but it’s possible

Hopefully avoid UNC for as long as possible, more than happy to take our chances with the rest.

The schlock yesterday in the 2nd won't happen in a playoff game.

This Powell/Spallina points vs Top 20 opponents graphic is eye opening. Talk about killing a narrative.

It's so dumb. I started watching lacrosse around the time Mike Powell was on campus. I still think he has a level that Spallina doesnt have (or really all but 2-3 guys ever). But there were games when he got shut down for one reason or another, and the depth of team and individual talent is much stronger now than it was 20 years ago. The narrative that Spallina isnt elite because he can't take units like Zapitello, Lynch, Schroter, etc. to the rack every time he gets the ball is ridiculous.

Or because SU hasnt won a title. This isnt 2009. The talent of teams like Maryland, Notre Dame, and Cornell has been substantial. And the transfer portal and all the COVID super seniors, and the prep school kids who come in as 20 year old freshman, has made it a very different landscape to win in.

Agreed. The talent pool has deepened overall. SU had great depth when the Gaits and Powells played. A few other teams were on the same level. Now, the top 20 generally has good to great depth. Mid level teams can take down top level teams on any given day.

Certainly, the NIL/Easy transfer era is different. That does not stop the elite players from being elite. Spallina is elite in a different era. Players can only play and be measured withing their era, comparing an elite player from one era with an elite player in another era is comparing apples to oranges, or worse comparing apples to airplanes. I think this NIL/Wild West era will close soon and there will be nothing like in the future.

Fig is currently 2nd all time for caused turnovers. He has been very aggressive on ball the last 2 games.

He's jumped up this year. Excellent on the ball. Getting stronger in transition. Still seems like he can get lost a little on pick plays or make an unnecessary slide, but it's difficult to say when that's on him.

Can you share?
I know superlight already answered but here's the graphic in case anyone wants to save and share when the argument comes up. The Tewaaraton thread on fanlax has been quite the read but I'm surprised no one has tried using the "he only got his points against weak teams" argument.

Faceoffs: John Mullen is still making violations. Yet, I watched all of the ND/Duke and Md/JHU games yesterday and I don't remember seeing any violations, or at least I didn't notice them. (maybe there were 1 or 2).

Did we just totally scrap inverting our middies ? I don’t recall seeing hottle or rhoa or kraftson or any middie ever going behind n starting the O there. Yes our attack does but that’s usually with a pole. Hottle was dusting dudes doing that. As quint always saids the best way to beat ND is to go from X n turn the defense. Which made me realize we actually haven’t inverted our middies really last few games. Almost seems like we are just trying to beat teams straight up talent vs talent guess say. Which all good n will win that way but not against teams with as much talent or even more.

Know we played colgate n their D was def weird. Was like a man/zone kinda thing n had shorty on joey for most of it which never thought i’d see that be the plan. We had looks for sure n hit ton of post. But didn’t have much depth besides our main guys (finn, joey, leo, rhoa). Just these weekend games notice the depth of scoring for some of them. Thinking that is gonna be huge down the stretch what guys other then the big ones can score. Hottle hahn mcintee etc has had games with goal. But feel it’s to far n between. Just feel that is how this team can reach next level is getting those other guys going all the time.

Think watching all these games this weekend good games has up the concern for me. Maby the horrible gb thing is a reason also. Cause if mullen/angelo struggle at X winning clean n we can’t field a gb for our life n unforced TOs. What happens vs top teams in playoffs n how do we keep up. Meaning if not winning faces or gbs have to win other areas to get ball more being saves or just stops or takeaways. Would say gbs would be another area if struggling at X ya need to win to give ball more to ur O but clearly these guys have tough time picking up gbs. Just feel we haven’t improved much from where we were at the start. Yes we still winning n all but not big improvement in areas we needed to or areas that were clear issues.

I don’t know just guess would like better showing this pass game. They started like they weren’t taking it serious or won the game before it was even at half. They still haven’t played a complete 60min game in my opinion n tho still regular season but season is coming to end n then its win or go home. Still felt like saw players jogging at times when needed to be a sprint. Or just half effort to make a play. The over flashiness when isn’t needed. Looking at all possible teams in tounry there are gonna be barely any gimmi games. So don’t show up for half or even a qtr that could be ur ticket home. Not hating just season closing n guess thought we look a lot better or a lot more consistent then we have. Either way huge huge game this coming week. Hopefully they are prepared n play a great full game.

As was stated comparing across decades can’t be done. Game so different. Go watch SU games from the 1980s and 1990s. The recklessness and turnovers would make this forum lose their mind.

Great players can succeed in different ways. Being in high school from “81-‘85 and seeing Tim Nelson play - wow. Side note he had 271 points in three years at Cuse. If he played four years at Syracuse, I would guess Joey would still be chasing the points record. Hope I got my numbers correct with Tim.

Then you move on to Zulburti and Casey and then Ryan. All different but so damn good. I think Joey’s game is a lot like Ryan’s.

I still think Mile Powell is the best I saw. Unbelievable dodges, vision, and effort.

Very fortunate the talent we have seen over the decades and all the players were different.
So enjoy the past, love the one your with (currently) and be open to the future talent.

Now boys! Bring the title back to where it belongs!

Yeah Joey needs 8 more points to pass Nelson break the record for most points by a player to play at Cuse (Wisnauskas doesn't count here because he didn't play)

What was up with the 2 announcers? Could they have been more critical on everything that Syracuse did? Don't think I've never heard announcers at our home field act like they did.

Jules Heningburg is a Rutgers guy and as he said it was his first time in the Dome. So he brought his biases with him on the trip. (Though some of the criticism was deserved.) Cooper Boardman is a Syracuse/Newhouse grad but he's relatively young and somewhat new in broadcasting lacrosse, though he has done some radio. He seemed at times to get caught up in Heningburg's criticism.

Ty. Rutgers guy should be one and done. 😂

I knew it was gonna be bad when Leo did a fake between his legs and then went up top the score.. the announcer says that he didn’t have to do that. He could’ve faked them both up top and it was unnecessary…lol
Maybe the team should listen though because there’s nothing like a Rutgers player telling you how to win a national championship.. lmao

On further research Casey has a daughter who playa for East Carolina, Mike and Ryans Kids look to still be on the younger side of things.
I believe the Powell nephew is the son of Mason.. the fourth brother.. Bella committed to East Carolina, but I haven’t seen her play one minute in college.. or even listed on the team
