College Football Tradition/Ritual

Interesting line in that article: "Syracuse will not change the design of its football helmets or pants, though, citing tradition as an overruling factor."
That was Jake's take.

Sums up the thread pretty well: tradition mattered (in some way) to Jake but seems to be valued a lot less now.

Certainly am not arguing your viewpoint, but I read as meaning in that time of changing the name, the unis will not. Over history, the unis have changed, I have to imagine they'll change again.

When SU did the mascot review back in 1995(?) I wish they would've changed the official nickname to Syracuse Orange Pride (I.e., a pride of lions) and selected an orange lion as our mascot. You would still have the option to keep Otto - along with Orange Pride/Lion - for our kids' club and as a touchpoint to meet/greet fans at games.

This approach would help tie our somewhat-fragmented mascot/nickname history together with a vision toward the future by clearly defining who and what we are to all fans and potential fans.

Just my opinion. I'm sure many will disagree cuz that's what we do. :)
Although I prefer Orangemen and Orangewomen, I could live with the Orange and "Orange Pride" as a motto. Then we could have an Orange Lion as a mascot and get rid of the fruit. Does any P5 school have a lion as a mascot?

You may be right.

But, they do stand and clap for the BB team at the beginning of every game.

And, they do the "Lets Go Orange" cheer during BB games.

Establish some fun traditions - or bring back some fun old traditions - and win a few games and the fans will probably be more likely to participate.

And, in my opinion "Down the Field" is an awful fight song.

The Saltine Warrior is a great fight song.
Back in the pre-ESPN and pre-1984 Supreme Court era when (usually ABC) would have the scoreboard show after the game, they would give the scores for all the D-1 schools with background music of the various fight songs. It usually included "Down the Field" They would also throw in the Slippery Rock score for yucks.

I'v always said Syracuse fans resemble more of a pro sports crowd and culture then a college sports crowd and never really understood why until just now and it has to do with the fact that the majority of fans who attend the games are not actually Syracuse University graduates but locals. I believe this is what leads to less rituals and tradition's, theoretically our fans have less attachment to the school then most other schools unfortunately.

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but if it were up to me the only music and entertainment at either basketball or football would be by a band.
At basketball, more and more it's obvious that the SSS has been given a bit of a gag order. I understand the ads, but a college game does not need the DJ along side the band. Same goes for football. I think if they axed the DJ, and gave more back to the band it would be more pleasing a college atmosphere.

And I know this has been said, but here's another vote for removing the microphone, and having cheerleaders do what other cheerleaders around the country do. Did we stop throwing girls up in the air after Michelle Munn?

Some pictures from Archbold...

This one is from the SU-Pitt game from 1958. I believe the cards depict a panther whose tail has been caught by an orange panther trap...

Syracuse v. Army 1956. Hope some day we can rekindle a series with them. They are a unique team to play. Would love to see SU play a game at West Point...

The last two are from a Syracuse v. BC game from 1972. Note the press box in the upper right corner and the old school wonderful uniforms Syracuse used to wear...

Someone's Mom was a pretty cute cheerleader back in the day :)

Yes Merle Harmon and Bud Palmer.

I love Down the Field. Maybe that's because it's the only SU fight song that I've really known, which I embraced. Maybe it's because my 5 year old marches around the house to it all the time. Who knows, but I really like it.

It sounds a lot better after we score touchdowns. Speaking of traditions, scoring touchdowns is one I'd really like to get back to.

PENN STATE.

:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:Oh LordOh LordOh LordOh LordOh LordOh Lord
I want to take this opportunity to point out the Columbia University had the original lion mascot. They also were the ones who first used the baby blue color knowledgeable people call Columbia Blue.

Penn State stole the lion, though they use a mangy flea ridden raggedy excuse for a real lion instead of the real thing. I am pretty sure nittany means flea riddled in some language. For shame, PSU fans, for shame.

UNC stole that baby blue color Columbia uses that I know as Columbia Blue. There is no such thing as Carolina Blue. I think the massive amounts of vinegar the Tar Heel folk ingest is responsible for the delusion that Carolina Blue exists. The official color and smell of UNC should be based on apple cider vinegar. Brownish gold. Perfect for them.

Just my opinion.

When I was a grad student at Duke in the early '80s and the rivalry was between TRUE BLUE and Carolina Blue, there was a filler put in the local paper that read: "Carolina Blue is the past tense of Carolina Sucks" :rolling:

No, they really are different colors. The Pantone color numbers are Columbia blue 292 and Carolina blue 542. When you put them next to each other, you can definitely see that Columbia blue is lighter than Carolina blue and noticeably different colors.

Here's the genesis of the Slippery Rock scores...

http://www.michigandaily.com/sports/10-legend-slippery-rock-12

"The unlikely marriage between Slippery Rock and Michigan began in 1959 when Steve Filipiak, Michigan’s public address announcer, saw the funny name on the wire service ticker. Wanting to inject life into a boring game, Filipiak read the score. The fans loved it.

“It got a humorous reaction from people because a lot of people didn’t even believe there was such a place,” said Art Parker, who worked in the control room that day, as he has for 425 consecutive Michigan games.

The scores became a regular occurrence. The wire ticker eventually was replaced by the telephone, and that required Parker to call each day to people like John Carpenter, Slippery Rock’s sports information director, for scores. On his first day, Carpenter had never heard of the tradition, and puzzled, he asked the inquisitor from Michigan why he wanted the score.

As Carpenter related to the Chicago Tribune in 1985, “I said, ‘Why do you people want to know what the Slippery Rock score is?’ And he said, ‘If you hold on a minute, I’ll tell you.’ The guy held the phone near the public address announcer, and then I heard, ‘Here’s the score you’ve all been waiting for: Slippery Rock 27, Waynesburg 7.’ And the place went berserk.”

In 1979, Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham invited The Rock to play a game in Michigan Stadium, something Slippery Rock officials are hopeful will happen again.

Slippery Rock optimistically expected 15,000 people to show up for its game against Shippensburg. Instead, four times that number, 61,143, attended, a Division-II record. Canham gave the team sneakers and cleats. Bo Schembechler addressed the team, according to Mihalik. They played in the Big House again in 1981."

The played again in Michigan Stadium this past season.

And Duke University is an attempted copy of Princeton University. The NJ based Duke family tried to put their name on Princeton (then "The College of New Jersey" I think) the school said no, so they decided to build their own Princeton and copied the whole place in the tobacco country they built their fortune from. Duke Gardens in Hillsboro NJ I think are very beautiful.
