So $4M of revenue share is going to basketball, $1M from the NIL tourney. How much do we need to compete a high level? I think SEC schools will have $9-10M. Assuming Autry is a good coach (which he’s not).

Since Saturday, I’m really at a lost for words as it pertains to the men’s basketball program. However, I kind of see two ways this goes for next season:

1. Big donors have a lot more confidence in Autry than the rest. They invest money in Autry that has them in the top 10 in the nation for NIL. Hoping that he succeeds and gets the medium and small donor more engaged to keep it going for 2026-27.

2. We maintain our current NIL budget position with increases for inflation levels. See if Autry can figure out the coaching thing and probably make strides the following season to get to an NIL level to perform at our historical level of success.

Option 1 is really going into the make or break moment for the program. If we go option 2 and Autry doesn’t figure out the coaching thing and gets fired. We probably go all in on option 1 in 2026-27 or 2027-28 with our new coach.

This is kind of the two paths I see this going. Option 2 would really suggest that we can’t afford the buyout, so it’s pretty much hoping Autry improves his coaching or he’s done after season 3. Kinda curious what others think, if we will be closer to option 1 or option 2 next season?

Etan and Devo said today on their podcast that $5 million will not get us out of the middle of the ACC. Devo mentioned today that Maryland has received two $10 million donations for basketball NIL. This tells us how far behind we are. SMU has no limit to NIL. Duke has an unlimited budget. We saw what Louisville did last year. I’m not sure our NIL budget will get us anywhere close to the top third of the conference.

Not with Red is coach they are right. We probably need to out talent our coach.

What is Marquette's NIL budget? I cannot imagine that it significantly beats SU's and they're not exactly in a geographical paradise. Why can MQ be good, but SU stinks?

If we have the money I was told that we were going to have next year then NIL won’t be an excuse.

….. Why can MQ be good, but SU stinks?

Why? Because SU has Autry as its coach and Marquette has Greg McDermott who is a very- very good coach.

SU should never have hired Autry who had absolutely no prior head coaching experience.

When did Greg McDermott leave Creighton? Marquette doesn’t have football. Everything goes to basketball.

I agree. Greg McDermott would be the first coach I would call if Red is gone, but he won’t leave.

In the era of easy transfer and buying players you can not risk an OJT "on the job training" scenario at this level. GMac is at the perfect place. Red should have started somewhere similar.

IF our NIL is behind I still think people are going to be surprised about how unattractive our job is to a currently successful P5 coach.

It isn’t. People are preparing excuses for Red.

Shaka Smart is the Marquette head coach (Point still stands however, light years ahead of Red in every possible coaching category)

We keep hearing about being better in NIL next year. What's the estimated number? Last year apparently was 2-2.5m.

And none of this nonsense about how it has to be secret for competitive advantage. Saying a number on this board won't make a lick of difference during the portal time. Opposing programs aren't going to change a single thing about how they recruit the portal based on what's said on this site.

Considering we were open with our budget last year and our limitations with Jesse some think it does hurt our competitive advantage.

Eh, I don't see it. Each spring it's pretty obvious what level of NIL programs have. Who cares if coaches recruit against us by saying we can't pay enough. When Red makes an offer in the portal, he'll give a number. At that point, why would the recipient care about what he hears second hand from opposing programs trying to recruit against us?

If anything, we're hurt by the country thinking we're poor because they'll try harder to outbid us. Like A&M with Lampkin. That's the current state. If we have money, put it out there. No downside and potential upside. Either way the amount of NIL we have is going to be pretty obvious in another month when Red shows up to the auction.
