Okay, here is my understanding of the story from what I consider to be a very good source..Dan was given a position in S&C not replacing Hicks...Dan subsequently started looking for another gig..Marrone found out and terminated him...

interesting. certainly is a believable story.

That sucks. Dan is good peoples.

But at the end of the day.....it's a business.

I would have done the same if I were Doug. Actually I probably would have just fired him. People taking demotions usually don't work out very well. Again, Marrone needs to do what he feel is best because in the end it's his bacon on the line and that bacon is starting to sizzle just a bit. Again, why I wish he would just get rid of Hackett, name himself as the OC because he pretty much is and hire a QB coach that can recruit and then hire a TE/ ST coach as well

I ran a fairly large company. Each time a manager would come to me and say " I heard that so and so is looking for a job" my reply was always the same. It is on us to create an enviornment so positive that people want to work here. You can never blame an employee for looking. Why wouldnt Dan or any other coach look? They have year to year contracts and DM has just let him go. So much for my comment on Doug being a class act in this situation. Unfortunately im not surprised

The class move by Marrone was offering Dan a S&C job, the nieve part was him actually believing he would take it and wouldn't look for another job. At Dan's age who wants to be demoted? We had a guy that whiffed on his desire to own part of our business, he said he would remain in his current role with a slight bump in pay, he was granted the raise, the next week he had the area peppered with resumes and was leading quite a smear campaign, upon hearing that... his stuff was packed and waiting for him at the front door the next morning his company truck keys handed over and his wife came and picked him up... NEXT. It's part of being the boss. 6 years later, I doubt he is anywhere near the level financially he was with us and is on his 3rd different job but still doesn't hesitate to run our company down to anyone who will listen

What bothers me is that Marrone deemed conley more of a problem then Hackett

Respectfully disagree. If DM knows a guy might leave, why would he want him to stay? He is in the process of cleaning up his staff and doesn't want to do it twice. His staff and players need to focus on getting better, not who is leaving.

Side note (no inside info): I feel like there is more to the story than I've read here. Somebody wasn't getting along or something. DC wasn't fitting in.

Or Marrone's star- Shafer has had enough of assistants undermining his authority on defense- just a thought.

Maybe he trusts Schafer's opinion more than his own, and I'm only half kidding. Schafer calls the shots with the D is what I'm guessing.

damn... i was really excited to hear he was sticking around.

not according to what Hoov50 was hearing

he said that at the end of the year, HCDM was micro-managing the D side of things and very involved with the D

Sounds like a familiar story. Year one was Spence and the O. Last year Cassulo and ST's. Now Schafer and the D?

Don't know..my understanding is that Marrone and Conley butted heads during their time together and Conley was "Marrone's whipping boy" as it was told to me..

What I do know is that for anyone who might be on their way out Marrone has been trying to help mitigate the impact on the people concerned.

This is what I have been told also.

Firs of all, like GoSU96 posted, all we have at this point is hearsay. Assuming the info is basically true, Ioffer the following:
  • While we all admire Conley's grit from his playing days, from a simple business management perspective, you can't have members of the staff who don't adhere to the company line. Conley has to realize that as an assistant coach, his career is intrinsically linked to Marrone's, and for better or worse, Marrone calls the shots. He simply can't afford to have an assistant coach on the staff who undermines his authority.
  • It sounds like Marrone threw Conley a life-line, and IF Conley accepted, I think it's poor form to keep shopping for another position.

uninformed opinion but what i've come to expect from a certain few here.

What's bothersome to me is so much public scrutiny over people replacements - we really don't know the "inside" story. We don't really know whats going on but we certainly have opinions about it. I could be the most productive employee at my work but if I tell the CEO he is full of $# I wouldn't have a job for very long.

The only thing that really matters is winning and if DM starts winning with new players and new coaches then we will all forget about Dan C.

I can't understand why people are so worked up on Conley yet they feel Rob Moore should be fired? Wide receivers out performed the linebackers, IMO. Maybe because Rob didn't stop at the bbq's? I don't know.. Rob's a great guy too

I guess Conley was liked better. I think Moore is doing a great job as a position coach, BTW. Just my opinion. Again, I could give a rats ass who stays or leaves, unless Marrone brings in a few big time recruiters it will just be more of the same, high fives and grab ass for a two star that we beat out some MAC teams for and loading up on jergen's because Doug has such a great eye for talent!!!

I have bit my tongue on the Conley situation for a bit, and will continue to do so.

However, I will ask you to answer this question. Would you be upset replacing Dan with a Specials and Linebackers coach with 8 years experience at schools like West Virginia Tech, Canisius, and Wagner?
