CIL, you are correct i have no idea what is going on at this point. I did however have good information on the team being split at half time of the Uconn game. If this is a good thing for the program great. Im just sad it couldnt work out for Dan and wish him luck.

Wait, the team was split at halftime of the UConn game?

REALLY????!!!!

YOU SHOULD MENTION THIS MORE! WHY HAVEN'T YOU MENTIONED THIS MORE?!?!?!

The Eagles always drafted Defense 1st, It wasn't until Don's last year in Philly he had a great Receiving Corp, ever when he had T.O. they went to the Super Bowl. Take the other QB's you mentioned and then put receivers who they had next to their name.
Eli is going to throw for 5000yds, throwing to 2 UDFA's.

Eli makes the receivers around him better.

the iggs drafted a few guys pretty high early last decade.

soupy mcpuke, makes the receivers around him worse.

Oh Lord

I think there's some truth to that, but I still think Don was not at the same level as the players I mentioned.

Maybe the words "moderately talented player" were too provocative.

I think McNabb was a very good NFL QB, but not an elite QB in sense that Brady or Manning or Favre or Rodgers is/was.

You're going a little heavy on the Really soup in this thread.

Very good NFL QB, probably not a great one (could be?), doesn't sound the same as a "moderately talented QB". Didn't sound that way to Dcuse, didn't sound that way to me. My point was that if Andy Reid is as good as you think he is, he would probably shoot for higher than moderately talented with the #2 pick, otherwise just not pick a QB that early. Because others made personnel mistakes with early QBs is irrelevant.

But maybe we have different thoughts on what moderately means.

Yeah, I think that's right.

The word "moderately" clearly bothered some of you.

Maybe that word was a bit provocative. Donovan was a good QB or very good NFL QB for a number of years. He was not an elite QB as I have indicated. I think, getting back to the original issue, that Andy Reid got as much out of him as anybody could have.

Don was not a Manning or a Brady or a Favre or some of the others I named. He could never throw with the accuracy that elite QBs exhibit.

Andy Reid really liked Don coming out of SU. And that turned out to be fine for him and the Eagles. He clearly fit with what Andy wanted to run in Philadelphia. That doesn't mean that McNabb was an elite player or that Andy was/is poor or mediocre football coach.

On the other hand, the analysis is not "irrelevant" because you were the one who chose to use draft selection as the measure of good coaching. And the fact is that drafting rarely offers a proper or accurate measure.

Aaron Rodgers I think fell pretty quickly in the draft his year. And Tom Brady was as we all know was a late round pick. Heck, Kurt Warner wasn't even drafted if I recall correctly. And Tim Couch was everybody's number one pick in 1999 and he of course flamed out pretty badly.

So, your "draft" analysis hardly resolves the question of Andy Reid's value as an NFL HC.

Just so I'm clear, in a thread about Dan Conley, which morphed into a thread about Doug Marrone (of course) we're now discussing Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi and Andy Reid... in context of Marrone???

I'm going to say something provocative... objectively speaking, any one of those guys socks may be a better head coach than Marrone.

Tom Brady in SB winning seasons - Fred Coleman, Deion Branch, David Givens, Troy Brown, Daniel Graham, Christian Fauria and the running back was Antowain Smith.

Oh yeah, it took everything I have to keep my snark out of this thread.

Not true -- Marrone manages the clock every bit as well as Reid. No one can argue otherwise.

It is funny that this thread is 5 pages long. I have learned nothing from it and don't really care about Conley or Brumbaugh in any sense other than it does seem odd to a casual fan that we are firing guys from the defensive side of the ball. But, ultimately, we don't know the motivation.

Oh, and I've accepted jobs while still looking for better ones. I'm sure my bosses would have been offended but ultimately it's your life.

All we really know is that those were the first (to be leaked) to be fired. Coaches on the other side of the line of scrimmage may yet get the axe. It's also possible that those have taken place but simply haven't been leaked, yet. Things should be clear in 3-4 weeks.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm attempting to argue here since I don't think many would be wise to put McNabb and Brady in the same class of QBs. BUT, regardless, I think it's worth pointing out:

Brady's average TDs, INTs for Super Bowl winning seasons (with the aforementioned WRs): 23 TDs, 12.33 INTs.
He also topped 4,000 yards just once prior to '07 and never had as many as 30 TDs in a season.

Brady's average TDs, INTs since 2007 (when they acquired Welker and Moss):
37.25 TDs, 9 INTs
Three 4,000-yard seasons and the only one that didn't top 4,000 was the 3,900-yard season in 2010

It should also be noted that the Pats have acquired Julian Edelman, Gronkowski and Hernandez in that span.

Again, I'm not sure exactly what this proves, but my guess is that Brady found himself in a really, really nice situation with Belichik/Pioli/Kraft and that that situation got even better -- in terms of talent and offensive production -- with the addition of Welker (perfect for the O), Moss and Gronk, in particular. Thus the better numbers.

So McNabb's legacy is debatable. Brady's isn't. But it's not exactly fair to suggest Brady was the same exact QB regardless of who was catching the passes.

IMO, the best comp, while we seem to sort of be on the subject, for McNabb is Big Ben. Both are big guys who aren't in the best of shape. Both can hurt you with their feet by not only running for a first down on occasion, but in terms of extending plays inside and out of the pocket. Each can play ugly at times and neither is perfect, but both seem to do much more winning than losing (McNabb a career .610 winning percentage; Big Ben at about .70 -- those numbers a bit more even if you lop of the DC season for McNabb as well as the first season in the league).

Roethlisberger's probably a bit better as a passer, McNabb the superior runner. Big Ben a career 92.3 rating, McNabb at 85.6, but that number is weighed down a bit by McNabb's early years when he was less refined and more of a threat with his legs.

The main difference is Big Ben's two Super Bowl wins. But this is where franchise and system come in, IMO. I respect Reid, but the Steelers are an exceedingly well-run operation. Big Ben has two rings but his two games look like this:

XL -- 9-21, 123 yards, 0 TDs 2 INTs
XLIII -- 21-30, 256, 1 TDs, 1 INT

Obviously XLIII was a solid game, but it was hardly great (Warner, by contrast, was 31-43, 377, 3 TDs, 1 INT). The first game was God awful.

Because guys like you refuse to admit that Doug has some issues. Support the program as much as you support the coach. Doug is a good guy and im on record of supporting him. The facts are that he lost the program and i reported it. Certain posters and im not sure you are one of them treat Doug like a God who can and has done nothing wrong. I dont buy that. I think that Doug has many gifts but a long way to go until he deserves blind support. That is all by the way great job on the little guys. Send me a private message and we can chat. Sorry to drive you nuts!

Every coach has flaws. No reasonable person on this board believes ours is perfect.

But some of us choose to be optimistic about the direction the program is heading because we've seen some good things and some bad things. There hasn't been a trend to lock into like there was under Robinson.

And it's not a fact that he lost the program. I heard from a player what happened in the locker room during the UCONN game and it doesn't match the civil war you say there was.

You don't, like, read my posts, do you?

Lets review his contemporaries. P. Manning, E. Manning, D. Brees, Rivers, Favre, A. Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Roethlisberger, Kerry Collins, Steve McNair and on and on.

Based upon?

Personally sorry to see this. I had a business dealing with Dan many years ago when he was pretty new to coaching. He was a class act all the way. A dignified and honorable gentleman and I wish him god fortune.

I do read your post and enjoy and agree with most of them. Lets hope we close strong on the recruiting front bring in some top coaches and have a great 12

I never called it a civil war
