I tried to warn everyone years ago.
The killer was that the cable companies didn't invest in greatly improving their user interfaces. Cable box tech and program guide navigation suuuuucks.
Ten years ago they needed to deploy smart boxes that replicated a Netflix-style navigation for on-demand video. And simplify live programming navigation by grouping it into genres (e.g. here's all your sports on right now in a scollable set of windows, just click to watch).
But they didn't, and what we call "pay TV" in the media biz has gone from 88% coverage in 2014 to barely over 50% now.
Meanwhile, most people are paying more than they did in 2014. Great work, everyone!
