Schollies being used. Does that mean you have to let all but 3 walkons go if that number remains intact? If so that’s harsh

Yet people are wringing their hands about not pounding the portal.

Why exactly is that an excuse to not find better talent. This is a business and we shouldn’t be keeping people if the position can be upgraded.
Agreed.. in the old days, when they were amateur student athletes, I would say keep them on to get their degrees etc but now being professional athletes with the portal, we need to manage the roster like what they are. Professionals

Sorry. You are correct.
Per NCAA.
  • Schools can choose to fund scholarships for all 105 roster spots, but they are not required to do so.

Walkons are not let go. they are walkons they can still go to school.

If you need more depth at a school like SU more scholies help.

I don't think many walk-ons fall into the category of professional athletes. It will be sad to see them being squeezed out of the program.

Are there walkons playing at a P4 school at any position other than special teams? Wait until some walk-on is responsible for tearing the ACL of a $4M NIL player.

Not unheard of for a walk on (or former walk on who was awarded a scholarship) to be playing on offense or defense for a p4 team.

Because you can’t just “cut” kids

As power conference school our scholarships are required to be guaranteed for 4 years.

Sure you can have a “talk” with a kid but if they decide to not leave you can not force them

I was always under the impression that P4 scholarships were year by year basis. D3 is different but not D1.

Thus, D1 can cut after the one year and tell them to hit the portal. Many schools, like SU, still honor the scholarship but it won’t count towards football if the kid wants to stay for school only. I have no idea if that will continue with 105 scholarships now but historically this has been the case.

I think this is the problem with a class of 37 players. How many of those players will never see meaningful time on the field. I really think the team needed great help on the defensive side of the ball and the portal was the way to fix it.

With 37, I think it becomes a numbers game.

And you would be wrong…

In 2015 the “power conferences” passed a rule that scholarships had to be guaranteed for four years

You are correct as it did change in 2015:

The scholarship is guaranteed but a spot on the team is not... Roon is a recent example.
