he's only 2 full length movies into his career, but I'm ready to declare him the greatest filmmaker of his generation.
I thought Whiplash was the best movie of 2014. Last night, we saw La La Land and were blown away. It is like a throwback to the Gene Kelly films of the 1950s, but with a very modern touch. Nobody can dance like Gene Kelly, but in every other sense, this is equal to or better than any of Kelly's films.
I'm not the kind of film buff who discusses the nuances of editing, shot-making, etc., but in this film there were several shots that were both noticeable and breathtaking even to a non-film person like myself.
Every once in a while, a movie comes out that I am willing to go back and see over and over again, and this is one of them. My wife and I have already made plans to go back and take my in-laws to see it again tomorrow night.
