Darrell Gill Jr. in the portal

I wanted Willis to take a step forward but sadly he did not this year. Unclear if he will moving forward. But you can put him in a different box than Gill and others because he wanted to stay. Everyone rips on DART but there’s a reason Willis isn’t here.

We weren’t paying Gill like he was a number one. You can disagree with that decision but is what it is.

Also we haven’t lost the entire WR room. We lost one proven guy and two others with potential in Ross and Hornsby. JRS graduates but was often hurt.

We bring back Cook, Russell, Williams, Boobie, and several other true freshman with potential. We honestly had too many WRs on the roster and needed to thin it out. Again you can disagree with who is staying but I think there are several freshman who can be the deep threat Gill was. And we’re paying Calvin to be a star.
Do you think Cook will move outside and Boobie takes over as starting slot receiver?

I’m not sure how things will shake out. Russell seemed like a good slot option when he was healthy too. We need some physical possession wide receivers. Calvin could be one but I’m assuming a freshman takes a step forward or we address in the portal.

We only have so much to spend and like any good company you need to allocate your resources where they are needed. A couple of WRs get very good money. Next you need a backup QB and RB. After that a starter on the OL and depth.

On D we need game ready DTS, a strong edge, Starting LB, Starting Safety.

That is where the money has to go. Gill is a very good player, and he is a loss, but we only have so much and he was expendable.

Paging Mr. Boggs and Mr. Montgomery...

This is the gamble. Betting on a stud, unproven freshman over an established Senior. Will be interesting to see what happens. Will appear to be a waste if Russell ends up going into the portal in a year.

While his attitude may have gone downhill as the losses piled up, so did the attitude of our coaching staff. If we had any ability to run block at all, Willis could have had a much better year. To say he didn't step up isn't fair. The line was trash and couldn't open a hole to save their lives.

That’s very different than the whole point of my post.

You said most guys who get to the pros last about 6 years. That isn't remotely true at all.
I said RBs tend to last about 3 years, on average, but about 3+ years is the average for the career length of ALL NFL players. QBs and Kickers last longer, but not by much. See for yourself.

This is a really tough spot. College football is going down the road of college hoops. Getting to the point where it’s a new roster every year and makes it tough to buy in.
We've spent our whole lives buying into rosters that were new every 3-4 years. Now we just have to get used to it being every 2-3. We will; people adjust. We root for laundry and an idea of a community that involves a school. Those things don't go anywhere.

I have a ton of respect for all you bring to the board so know this isn't an argument just to you, but to what I see as a prevailing thought on the boards. We've ALWAYS done this. I'm not letting the alteration of the time frame bum me out. The kids have ALWAYS left.

Look at the programs that win. Almost all are led by upperclassmen, not unproven true Freshman and Rs Fr.

Russell hasn’t shown me anything, nor has he produced thus far in his career.

Do we plan to win consistently with freshman and young kids? I think that will be close to impossible.

I’ll wait until we see who is picked up in the portal, but we’re at the point where the same 12-18 programs will compete to make the playoffs every season and continue to further distance themselves from the field.

I've said it a bunch of times in this thread, so forgive me. But you have to return a core group of players every year to keep continuity. You can't just bring in 15 or 20 new starters every year and expect a team to have any chemistry at all until about a month into the season. You don't get as much development in camp as you do playing live competition.

Appreciate the post, and i really hope it’s true. I stopped watching college hoops when Boeheim reneged on Hop. With cbb early entry and the transfer portal it got to be too much, especially the road we chose to go down. I’ve tried several times to watch again, but i just can’t get into it. I never thought i’d ever say that. I never missed a game at the Dome
for decades and one season came and i was just done with it. The sport was ruined.

At least with college football you have to be 2 years out of HS, but my favorite part has always been watching kids come out of HS and grow. Guys like Sherm, Siekaly, DJ, Moten, etc. That ruined cbb quick. CFB is a different monster and i enjoy high level CFB, but you can only go so many decades hoping for 6 wins and a crap bowl before you stop investing time and money.

It’s not what I was saying if you read the whole post in context to what I was responding to.

Unfortunately we do not know the end game yet. I just wish they would hurry up and get it over with already. In the mean time we need to make ourselves as marketable as possible for the B1G (long shot), SEC (even longer shot), or some Super League/Division. But even if we have a seat at the table, we need a pathway for success.

What I do not want to see is SU as the equivalent to a minor league FB team. Why watch a low quality product when one can watch the majors instead? I would 100% prefer to pull back in that case. Give me the college feel of bands, cheerleaders, mascots, chants over the stale atmosphere we are seeing at professional sporting events.

This board is literally a cesspool of misinformation, factually incorrect erroneous information based upon personal and subjective speculation. I remember saying when we were three and one, somewhere around there if this season goes south there will be haters galore coming out of the woodwork, even more so than previous coaches. Yet with the same mistakes. I will say no more and that is what stinks, I wish people could smell themselves, like seriously foul. Haters will always hate and I will get lots of dislikes. I would much rather be the positive student centric, big picture oriented view concerning why Syracuse is an amazing place. The the pervading pessimism and negative mindsets literally are destructive. Not only for the individual, I trust not the university and our mission. It might be a character issue on my part so I apologize but I seriously have a problem with ridiculously pessimistic people who prejudge with little cerebellar capacity. Let alone goodness and heart. People who judge on multiple levels and yet accuse others of doing that when it is fiction. I have honestly asked to just remove myself, certainly not where I come from but just here. My issue though, big SU homer from back in the day here. I see what happens for good and I will stay there, I am a product of that fruit and I truly love it, go Orange!!!!
LGO!

I would love it if we spent real money on OL and DL. Seems like we’re ALWAYS outplayed at the line.

My thought as well.

If I'm Fran, my top 5 highest paid portal guys are all lineman. DL & OL. Backup QB, RB, LB, S come after.

We always hear the priority is "run the ball, stop the run". I'll reserve judgment by what they do, not what they say.

Build from the inside out.

While I agree that is where the money needs to be spent over the skills, it needs to be built IMO from the HS ranks and then retained. Everyone is looking for help on the lines and we won't be able to out bid. Also when it comes to the OL, you cannot have 5 new starters every year and expect results.

Nah he will not always be part of our Orange family. Transfers never are.

Also, look at Pena and how that worked out for him.

Grass isn’t always greener. But I do wonder how much Angeli being hurt this year and the awful last two months of the season played a factor.
Wouldn’t say never. Particularly when concerning a grad transfer who doesn’t project to see the field in his final year, or whose skill sets don’t necessarily fit with a new coach or scheme.
I’ll always consider guys like Enrique Cruz and Joe Girard to be Orange. And I am reasonably sure they feel the same way.

The dilemma is that it might cost as much to retain really good OL as it will to acquire them in the portal.

So, do you spend at the HS level, develop, and hope to retain? Or do you spend on an experienced, proven OL for a year or 2 who can help right away?

I also think it is inevitable that there will be a need for at least a few new DL/OL starters every year. This is the new reality.

I’d be surprised if Russell doesn’t start. You don’t bring in a 5 star to Syracuse and not start him and expect to get more five stars in the future.

I don't think we can build an OL or DL via the portal. Sure we will need add prices every year to complete the lines. But we need the foundation.

When it comes to HS OL I don't think you need to spend a lot of money as much as know what to look for. Someone with a eye for talent can pick out 2-3 star kids. Sure once they have PT in college they will cost money to keep, but I think it is easier to convince a kid already here to stay vs getting his equal in the portal to come here.

That said we aren't really getting guys in the portal who are known commodities the last two years. Our best players came due to a prior relationship with our coaches. The pure mining the portal guys have been busts.
