The bolded part - your point - is not close to being true. Careers of NFL players are about half that long.

I remember that it was a BIG DEAL, just a couple years ago, that all the linemen for Texas A&M were guaranteed $75K for the year, and everybody was saying "how are we going to keep up with that?"

Prices have EXPLODED these past couple years. It's gotten ridiculous. It's unsustainable, because the spending is going to keep going up until you're paying $40-50M to field a team for one season. We're practically there right now.

All our best recruits from his 1st class (ranked #40 - our best in 20 years) are gonzo. That's not 2 guys. Last year, we lost our best returning DL to the portal, and we sucked against the run this past year. Not a coincidence. You have to keep your best players for a couple years, or you're road kill as a program. We're going to learn a lot from who Fran can get in the portal.

Lets not sugar coat it with Pena though. Yes times have changed but that doesn't mean you have to embrace it either. Pena stayed because we were his only P4 offer and was perpetually injured. He gets set up to have 1 good year under Fran so that a few blue bloods come calling and he tried to strong arm more money out of the deal and bolted when he didn't get his way. Wasn't offered originally by those schools and wouldn't have been had he not had a career year.

Pena will never be remembered as a member of the Orange family. He was hurt for a couple year and had 1 big season mainly because McCord. He can kick rocks for all i care.

Here’s the short version: The guys on an NFL team I follow aren’t bolting after 1 year because of NIL deals. When an NFL team gets a new player (draft or FA) I’ll be able to watch them play for years. If they don’t last in the NFL because they aren’t good enough to be there, that’s a different argument that has nothing to do with my overall point.

His numbers were awful at Penn State. You can't say he had a much better year there vs anywhere else just because he had a good bowl performance against backups. He probably would have had his 12 game Penn State totals (447 yards and 1 td) near matched through 4 games with Angeli and finished the same or better at SU.

He averaged 9.2 ypc with Shrader, 11.2 ypc with McCord and 11.3 ypc at Penn State. He's an extraordinarily average athlete with really good hands. McCord just got him the ball much more (84 vs 49) and in the end zone 9 times vs his 2 at Penn State.

Yes, but only because he went to a school that was better prepared to play with a backup QB.

Funny thing is happening, to your point - G League basketball players are going back to college, because NIL pays more. Happened with one guy on the Knicks, with another soon to follow.

In response, I saw a quote from some AD saying that they want to outlaw anyone who has signed a pro contract from later playing in college.

People get annoyed when guys sign a deal (a contract), then leave before they even fulfilled it. There's no buyout or damages but eliminating the spring portal should rectify this issue (in theory). He agreed to be a captain then bailed. I view that differently as guys who enter the portal before spring ball.

Very few ordinary employees have contracts so i don't think it's really applicable. Of course a normal person should jump at more money. But a normal person with a contract also has to deal with the fallout. CFB has been the wild west.

Don't disagree. As things turned out, he made a better decision. But it wasn't looking like that until the end of September.

And I think an unpublicized part of this is that they have agents in their ears, and in their parents' ears, telling them why it's going to be better, and why everything will be ok if they leave.

A hard reality, is it really worth it to the player? He already has really good measurables and great hands. He has film here and he would have his degree from here which unequivocally is gold in my opinion in this entire country, trust me I know these things. That is a big component being lost More than likely more money don't know for sure though and definitely a roll of the dice. It is almost like going to be a lot of players who choose to leave for whatever reasons and I'm not saying bad will always to a degree lose their identity and more than likely regret it later.
