Darrell Gill Jr. in the portal

People get annoyed when guys sign a deal (a contract), then leave before they even fulfilled it. There's no buyout or damages but eliminating the spring portal should rectify this issue (in theory). He agreed to be a captain then bailed. I view that differently as guys who enter the portal before spring ball.

Very few ordinary employees have contracts so i don't think it's really applicable. Of course a normal person should jump at more money. But a normal person with a contract also has to deal with the fallout. CFB has been the wild west.
they don’t sign contracts though, their spot is basically “at will.” Pena was promised nothing until the first check is deposited.

As far as the captain thing, that designation and a dollar gets you a cup of coffee. Sure we ascribe significant moral value and obligation to it but if a guy is getting underpaid (according to the market) and they can get market rate elsewhere then they should take it. It seems silly to say Pena is bad for leaving the team but Fran and the team is good for underpaying someone who was supposedly important to the team.

They sign NIL contracts and now rev share agreements. There’s nothing at will about that. Rickie got paid.

Arizona State a school to watch for Gill, Comes in as a high end 4 star transfer on 247.
There’s no spin. This is a big loss. Can’t lose your would be senior #1 WR who has played since a Frosh and brush it off.

This isn’t like losing Pena. 5’10” slot WR’s come an go. 6’3 track star deep threats are a different story.

He was good for Syracuse standards but the Tennessee defensive backs bullied him because he's a beanpole. I don't think we'll notice.

I liked him because he was a deep threat who improved every season. He matched his catches from his sophomore year as a junior without a QB that could make a forward pass. You’d only assume he continues to grow as a senior. Home run hitters don’t grow on trees, but mostly we’re not going to win without experienced teams. Maybe not a #1, but a nice complement as a playmaker you have to watch. I don’t see anyone on the current roster that is comparable.

I really like Darien Williams as a home run hitter but he's a bit smaller and obviously has less experience. Ultimately I understand the program investing elsewhere and hoping the pass friendly scheme and healthy QB will beget good WR play.

I like Williams as well, but different body types, and even though he showed flashes, he’s still unproven and underclassmen. I’m big on winning with experienced teams. Looking back at our successful seasons each team was led by seniors and juniors.

I felt that way about the NFL 10-15 years ago and just lost interest.

I don't have time on the weekend to watch 3 games on Sunday, then Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night.

And 20-25 of the 50 man roster are new every year.

When it's 2 hours like basketball or soccer, sure, I'll binge, and watch highlights. That's why NBA and soccer are winning - manageable time to watch a game, high level of performance, great competition.

But at 3.5 to 4 hours, 6 times a week like the NFL requires of you to stay informed, I mean, I have a life. I have other interests. I don't have a gambling addiction. And who are half of these guys anyway? Am I right?

I guess w/ NFL since it's more popular there's more resources to keep track of transactions. With college it feels like 1/3 of rosters turn over every season now and even more if teams are going through coaching changes.

Exactly, he’s an average athlete who got offered more money to go elsewhere. Everyone single one of us has done the same thing in our careers. Why are theirs any different?

I think he's a better than average athlete. Doesn't he run like a 4.3 40, and isn't he 6-3?

Except Pena did not get more money and he was offered a fair deal by SU.
Well you consider it a fair deal as a fan, maybe he didn’t. This is a players market right now. Maybe it didn’t work for him but it has for a lot of players

So he took less money and didn’t do anything more to market his NFL skills…solid
I mean, I’m still not sure it was actually confirmed he made less

Also should note that he made the right decision when Rickie was starting. He clearly knew he sucked

We went over this before, but sure choosing not to believe fits your narrative.

Right decision? That’s a matter of opinion.
