There's no buyout or damages but eliminating the spring portal should rectify this issue (in theory). He agreed to be a captain then bailed. I view that differently as guys who enter the portal before spring ball.
Very few ordinary employees have contracts so i don't think it's really applicable. Of course a normal person should jump at more money. But a normal person with a contract also has to deal with the fallout. CFB has been the wild west.
As far as the captain thing, that designation and a dollar gets you a cup of coffee. Sure we ascribe significant moral value and obligation to it but if a guy is getting underpaid (according to the market) and they can get market rate elsewhere then they should take it. It seems silly to say Pena is bad for leaving the team but Fran and the team is good for underpaying someone who was supposedly important to the team.
