Has any one heard we may change defense a little. I heard it but not a proven source and didn’t get what we are switching to.
Just get dline bigs who can pass rush and the D fixes itself.. Until that happens its a scramble for any D to keep up with todays offenses. Ask Alabama.. they have all the big dudes in the world and when they cant get to the passer they get chewed up like everyone else.
I think the D-Line is going be outstanding this year if they stay healthy.
I think it's a sign of a good coach if he says this isn't working; we need to shift x, y and get talent for z.
Totally agree:
DE: Coleman, Robinson, Berry, Jonathan, Morton, Ellis, Pickard
DT: Black, Slayton, Williams, Harper, Grosvenor, Ruff.
Not a bad group.
I agree. Nothing in the way the we play is designed to make the D look good.I actually had no real problem with our D last year... until attrition took a toll we actually were able to play with the big boys. More often than not it was the offense's inability to execute which led to entire quarter-plus stretches where the O couldn't get a first down that hurt the D. I liked how we started bringing pressure more often while still playing a relatively safe D that limited big plays.
I think with more depth and a more competent offense the D will look even better.
This would be my guess. People hear Tampa 2 and get frightened, lol its still a basic 4-3. I would like to see more man concepts. We have longer and faster DB's now.No idea but the Tampa 2 is run from a 4-3 base defense with more zone principles.
If and IF there's tweaking or switching you'd just see more man to man on the outside and blitzing from the linebacking core.
IF
Curious about that. We essentially have the same DBs in the first unit as last season, if Cordy remains the starter at safety. The grad transfers Martin & Butler, who have moved on, provided some size last season. There are a couple of candidates with size in the second unit (Clarke and Melifunwo), if that is what you mean. This would be my guess. Cordy is the minority. Frederick and Scoop were recruited by Shafer but they are not small guys like Dowels, Ellison and Rodney. Weve recruited taller DB's the last couple years. The depth in the secondary has longer guys. Martin and Butler length gave the staff a chance to do some of the things they wanted to do in the secondary. They will be replaced by the guys you just mentioned. Does that help?Curious about that. We essentially have the same DBs in the first unit as last season, if Cordy remains the starter at safety. I reached out to him to ask that. He told me he knows where he's going, but he's not ready to announce yet.Anyone know where Samuels ended up?
Keep in mind Cordy has to stay healthy and perform well enough to keep his spot. Cisco (6'0) can push for his spot. At worst he can play the nickel. Like you said, We dont know yet. Could be some skake ups. Melf, Clarke, Coley ( 6'3,6'2,6'2) can all play the nickle corner or safety. Ward likes to go with 3 safeties on 3rd and long situations. The 3rd safety in a cover 3 scheme, (3 safeties on each third of the field with the CB's squating in the flats). We are bigger overall, and that helps dictake what packages we can run. Gives us more flexibility to run some combo ( man/zone) schemes. Allows us a to match up better vs Pro team that use TE's. We have two returning CB's that are 5'11 and the backs ups are 6'0 or taller and Trill is coming in. The size within the depth give us position flexibility and more package options. Cant just look at starters.Correct, the depth guys in the secondary are bigger than the 3 experienced back-ups who transferred out. Unless there are some shake-ups, the top DB unit is essentially the same guys as last season, with Cisco pushing into the mix in competition with Cordy.
The Spring game will give us a chance to see those depth guys -- Stritzinger, Melifonwo, Clarke. Lost some experience with those transfers, but these three are bigger athletes -- so, heading in the right direction.
Four proven players at both DT and DE, with other quality guys competing for PT behind them. Good spot to be in, considering how things were the previous two seasons re: depth.
