Demetres Samuel Jr

Man, for only being 17, Demetris Samuel Jr. has really impressed me . You can just tell he belongs out there even though he’s still so young. He’s got that length and athleticism to stay with receivers, and he doesn’t shy away from pressing or jumping routes. What I really like is the confidence he plays with — he doesn’t look scared of the moment at all. Even when teams test him, he battles back and doesn’t hang his head. The coaches clearly trust him too, because they’ve had him on the field a lot, not just at corner but also on special teams and even a few snaps on offense. For a freshman, that’s big.

If I’m looking at him like a scouting report, his biggest strengths are his instincts, physicality, and ability to play the ball in the air. He’s hard to beat deep with that speed and length, and he closes fast on shorter routes too. Of course, he’s still got stuff to clean up — his technique in off coverage and staying disciplined with his eyes are things he’ll get better at with experience. But he’s only 17, so the upside is crazy. Give him time to get stronger and sharpen his skills, and he could honestly turn into a lockdown corner for Cuse.

Not to be negative, but I do worry about him getting poached like how Watson did… what’s stopping an sec school from throwing a huge bag at him.
File this under “positive problems.”

Situations like Watson’s means we’re recruiting good players, and they are performing (often well above their ranking).

I’m sure the coaches aren’t going to leverage this in recruiting (hey, come to Syracuse and you can leave after a year and get a bigger bag), but I’m sure recruits would take notice of what early playing time opportunities and the Cuse platform have done for other recruits.

No sense worrying about it. We have a stud player. Cross that bridge if/ when we get there.

It is really a shame that his first time stepping on a college football field was against Tennessee. If he'd played Colgate first [just for example], he'd have gotten the jitters out, gotten his sea legs, and been more ready than having to play against a stud WR from a playoff team from last year, and the moment being slightly too big for a 17 year old in his first live game action at the collegiate level.

He seems to have gotten a LOT more comfortable since then.

Brown has made it clear he's on the three year plan to go to the NFL. At least with the revenue sharing, the school can allocate him some serious cash. If he's on the first round track at the end of the year, he may be better off staying at Syracuse and not screwing anything up by switching to a factory school and having to compete with other 4 and 5 stars (not that Fran doesn't plan on bringing in competition.)

Definitely a positive problem but you can for sure pitch against people poaching our players. Especially if the players are happy AND playing here. Example players like Peña, Deuce, Jahad Carter and Watson. Happy here and played early. All 4 were studs here and well on their way to being draft picks. As they were being developed the right way here. They chose to leave for money. Peña is playing So-So. Definitely had a better season here last year so far. Deuce hated his time at LSU and came back and is a cornerstone of our defense. Jahad left and was basically never seen again. Watson is tbd but isn’t getting nearly as many snaps at Texas this year as he would here.

Then you have an abundance of guys that CHOSE to stay here and develop. Outperformed their recruiting rankings and make NFL rosters. All recently you had Iffy, Cisco, Garrett Williams, Trill, Bergeron, Tucker, Lequint Allen, Zaire, Wax, OG, Alijah Clark, and Barron. All in recent years had options to leave for more money. Hell McCord had options with more money but chose to come here. The point is, you can choose to leave here and not properly develop and your NFL chances are likely gone based on past experiences. OR you can choose to stay here, for a little less money. Properly develop and you’ll have as good a shot as making a roster on Sundays than any other school. And past experiences prove that as well. The choice is there’s. Immediate money. Likely 6 figures but your Dream of the NFL is iffy. Or you can still get paid here at Cuse. Not as much, you develop for a couple years but you get your dream of the NFL, 6-7 figures on an NFL roster. For more than a year. Even if you are on practice squad

at the end of the day, he's showing that he was our best option at CB versus Tennessee.

Excellent points here

Thing is, Fran's a talent developer. Kids come here because they know he's going to help them get where they want to be. The risk of losing talent you've developed comes with the territory.

Say Samuels transfers to OSU at some point. That'd suck, sure, but it's also a situation where some 4 or 5 star we're looking at sees that and realizes that Syracuse can trust and build them into a killer true frosh when the LSUs and Bamas of the world want them to redshirt.

Truth bomb

What's stopping them is me winning the lottery this week and being able to give him a huge bag to stay
Any chance you can pay off my house? I can’t cover anyone or catch a ball but I can be your best friend for life!

First you ask a favor, then you threaten him. Probably not the best way to go. 😉

Nothing. Not our problem, though. That is up to the university and Fran Brown to limit the chances.
It's not really about whether it's our problem. It's about wanting my team to be good and being frustrated if/when one of our best young players is poached. Hopefully, we can hang on to him.
