Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

May find Trueblue there this weekend knocking some back

In my experience, a food hall + booze is a great, great thing. You sit at the bar, get banged up, wander around and grab a sandwich, go drink more, eat some noodles, repeat. All in one place, with (hopefully) spacious and clean restrooms.

If I were traveling to Syracuse and staying at the Marriott downtown, this would basically be my evening.

The only downside that I could see is that a food hall bar isn't really as intimate. It can feel a little bit like drinking in a mall food court if it's not done right. Not the same vibe as say tossing back a few pints at Kitty Hoynes or The Evergreen.

Yep, got to have the right flow and vibe. Time will tell with this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the feel and the layout, though there's very little comfortable waiting room for people picking up orders. Probably because the designers expected take-out places to move orders in 3 minutes, not 15-20.

Kitty Hoynes = wildly over-rated.

Kitty Hoynes pours the best Guinness and that is a fact, it's the closest to what I had in Ireland than any other gin joint I've been in.

I tried boycotting the place because of Katko and lasted about 2 months before getting the shakes for a proper Guinness.

Not to mention the service is always top notch. I go there a decent amount (well, pre-covid at least) but I would in no way consider myself a regular. Regardless, the bartenders always remember who I am and what I like to drink. Can't beat that.

Finally made it to Salt City Market over the weekend. I had the Firecracker Thai Kitchen and my wife had Erma's Island Jamaican. Also got a slice of chestnut mocha tart from the cake bar and a juice from farm girl. Everything was great. Looking forward to going back to try everything else.

Did you try the egg dish from Firecracker? I'm a big fan of that.

The street style eggs? Yes it was awesome. Their egg roll was great too.

Street-style eggs, that's it.

I had that in takeout form last summer and it was very good, a solid B+ dish. But then last week I was standing in line at Sley's and saw someone walk away from the Firecracker counter with the eggs on a real dinner plate, as intended. Wow. Looked a million times better than it did in a plastic container after a 30-minute wait.

What are street-style eggs?

I can't read it either but the pandemic isn't going to last forever so I don't understand how Esther thinks entertainment venues are a millstone unless she is only looking 6 months into the future. I honestly think it's the only way Destiny survives as retail isn't going to pay the bills.

That picture in the header of her story reminded me of Kahunaville, I had a bad experience there one time and never went back.

I took my daughter to Salt City market yesterday afternoon. The wait to get in was maybe 15 minutes. We ordered stuff from 7 different vendors and took it home to try with my wife, buffet style. The Thai place is really, really slow. We order 3 of the Firecracker Spring Rolls, and it must have taken them 20 minutes to drop 3 in the hot oil to fry them. They were really tasty, but their family is probably the slowest at preparing your food.

We had a beef schwarma and a gyro, and thanks to this board, I knew to avoid the sub roll. Both were very tasty, although with the gyro, they could have given less meat, and a little more veg and tziki sauce. The guy was trying to be generous, but it made the sandwich a little unbalanced and dry. The schwarma is cut into pieces and was very tasty.

The Asian girls who do the fancy cupcakes did a nice job, kind of like Glazed and Confused; no real ethnic element to the food. The line for the soul food was also pretty backed up, with lots of people waiting for their orders, and had run out of a couple of their main dishes. So, at least they are doing well enough to sell out. That's a good sign.

Generally, fun overall, a nice addition to that end of Salina. If they can get that building across the street from both Salt City Market and Hotel Syracuse to reopen, and then get the Central Tech renovation completed with that grant money they got, then this end of Downtown's revitalization could have its anchors.

I'll probably wait until we can eat there, next time, and obviously order less food. But I wanted to do as much as I could to sprinkle a little money on most of the vendors.

thoughts on the Price Chopper/Tops merger? I haven't been in The Chopper in years, I'm not sure I even have their shoppers card anymore. I only go to Tops when I don't want to deal with Wegmans and need beer given that Tops is closer to me. Their prices on just about everything are ridiculous so I wonder how much that will change after this merger goes through.
