Diehards Giving Up

I did not renew my season tickets this year. I do not regret that decision. I saw the writing on the wall when Red made his roster changes in March/April. I said as much on here and was hammered by some folks as a debbie downer.

Sticking with Chris Bell and JJ as the two main points of focus on this team and expecting them to be good defensively while letting Maliq bounce to Duke was what convinced me that his only plan was hope. Hope that Bell rounds out to be a better all-around player, hope that JJ can be something more than what he's shown in his first two seasons, hope that he stockpiled enough projects to hit on one or two and hope that the team just hits their shots. That's not enough for me.

I don't think being good next year should be too hard. Let's say the freshmen are a sunken costs in terms of NIL and stay even with a new coach bc we convince Melo it's for the best.

You only have to pay Donnie and maybe 3 portal guys. Have a smaller roster. Cuffe Petar McCleod probably have no better options and get you to 10/11. JJ and Moore get enough money from someone else even Bell probably finds a decent bag but they won't be missed.

Every decision the Red has made has been the wrong one it seems.

It is certainly possible under 1 condition, new HC.

I'm very excited about the Knicks.. I actually think if they stay healthy they can win it all

Same. They have the best starting 5 in the league. Health is critical.

That's not fair. My apathy comes from a focus on my mental and physical well-being.
It's precisely because I'm a diehard, that I can't stomach more than a few minutes before coming to the realization that we're not gonna be competitive, at all, in that game . My heart and blood pressure can't handle the aggravation. JMHO
This……

I’ve bled Orange for my entire life (all 50+ yrs of it). I haven’t lived in CNY for the vast majority my adult life but everywhere I have lived I
Have been known as “that Syracuse guy.” I fly the flag, half my wardrobe is orange, I have 1 block S hat that I wear everywhere ( much to my wife’s displeasure - it’s old, stinky and I have to be really delicate when I do wash it now). And everyone in my neighborhood knows my cars because they all (even the kids) have Orange on them.

That being said, @ some point I had to start breaking away for my own well-being. I don’t expect championships on a regular basis, I just want to know we are competitive and make the occasional run. That isn’t happening anytime soon with this current situation and it appears to be acceptable by the powers that be.

You must have not read my comment when I started the thread. My fandom has not died or stopped. I’ve been following Cuse for over 30 years. My comment and the basis of the thread was that diehard fans on this board are becoming despondent (giving up). When you stop planning around games, turn the tv off mid game, miss games because of mental health that is giving up on this team. It does not mean you are no longer a Cuse fan and switching teams. We are life long fans.
The post was to point out that it is concern that even diehard fans not just casual fans are losing interest in the basketball team.
You’re onto the reality of the situation with this post and bringing this up. And the fact that this is my first foray to the basketball board this season after years and years of daily involvement suggest you’re correct.

Most certainly a “die hard” Hardcore fan since the early 70’s, season ticket holder in the big sports forever, as big as Syracuse fan with all that comes with it is anybody on this board, One of the original and still founders of the fine mess/SyraCruz tailgate, and now N I L group, contributor to all the NIL collectives, etc etc.

But I have more than checked out. Mostly because as one poster so aptly put it, because of the deconstruction and the deevolution of “college“ sports from the NIL portal making the individualized interests more important and more emphasized than the collective team concerns.

The result is it has forever turned me off as much as or even more than the lack of success on the court, with the two being inextricably related.

A bunch of individual mercenaries more concerned about their individual stats, and thus what kind of $ they can get here there and everywhere, brought in year in and year out each year, others leaving here year in and year out each year, all with no loyalty whatsoever such that they’re never gonna be able to create a cohesive enough team necessary here to be successful with our financial realities.

I dropped my season tickets two years ago, this when I saw the handwriting of all this on the wall with exactly what is occurring now, not necessarily nor solely because of reds issues that many are accurately pointing out, but because of the system with concerns knowing The challenges here will be nearly insurmountable, both in-house and big picture in the new environment. Totally get why so many coaches are calling it quits.

On the upside, As someone posted today thank God for Syracuse football, and this coach that seems to have somehow lessened or minimized this new world of "college" athletics re the concerns I mentioned above.

Where somehow someway he has made it more than most, certainly more than basketball, as it remains about the name on the front of the jersey and the family aspect of a team as much, if not more, than the name of the back of the jersey.

Really is the only thing keeping me invested Still. On the other side of the coin is the profound effect it has all had on Syracuse basketball.

Whether he’s up to the job or not,I actually feel bad for red being in the middle of this all.

Regardless, it still has not stopped me from nearly completely checking out, not going to any games, not even paying attention to when they're playing for the first time in my life, and only keeping up through you guys and an occasional look see.

It really was equally about the players to me, getting to know them, usually from a distance, sometimes up close with a familiarity year after year, watching them develop individually, then develop and evolve into a team with a fighters chance for great success.

I fear that is all history now, at least, as far as basketball is concerned. Seeing a Leo Rautins, or a Sean Kerins develop finally into a good player by their third and fourth is now in the dustbin of history ever seeing that again, or at least happening here because with the current system and the wild Wild West of it all, that evolution to a good or even great player, will occur elsewhere.

Again, as we all have seen this developing over the last couple of years, but in particular for this year, and this team, I realized the losing battle it would be when I saw Lampkin interviewing kyle McCord during the football season.

This was the guy brought in to lead the team both on the court and off, and it was painfully evident to me it wasn’t going to happen

Maybe the football situation is short term and an illusion obscured by just the sheer numbers, kids in helmets and them buying into Frans DART and football family first on the football side. I don’t know.

But if I perceive it ever gets like basketball on the football side, I might very well check out there as well and be out all together.

But for now no, what I used to put into hoops I’ve reallocated to and increased and fact tripled my football investments/seats etc buying into Fran’s vision and philosophies, simultaneously holding onto a vision of times likely to have gone by, or will be gone soon there too but somehow, at least for now, seemingly are being maintained.

So, yeah, two things: first, get off my lawn!, and then "thank God for Syracuse football!"(Credit to Tomcat for that last statement today!)
