Diehards Giving Up

Very glad your blood pressure is under control. As is mine with medication also. I've been an SU fan for at least 68 years growing up in Syracuse. The first thing I remember is Jim Brown playing in the '56-'57 Cotton Bowl and I think we lost because he missed an extra point. I remember Ernie Davis and the great '59 National Championship team. And of course the "Infamous" 1961 Notre Dame game, which I still haven't gotten over. [I hate them for what they said and did after the game.] I even have a scrapbook about it with all the articles from the old Herald-Journal -- somewhere. And I even remember SU basketball team's record setting losing streak I think in the early 60s. But this year's team just isn't interesting to me to watch. That's why I stopped. So maybe it's just that my "cloth" is older and my interest is watching an uninteresting team is waning.
Yes the honorable thing would have been to forfeit the game because of the referees blatant error.

Yes, that's the point. ND had no "Honor". Didn't even honor their word that they'd abide by what the NCAA Rules Committee concluded. I recall the headline in the Herald-Journal. Something Like: NCAA: Erred. Father Joyce: Nuts to you.

62/67 P4 schools in Net. We are ranked higher than 1 B1G team, and zero SEC and Big 12 teams. Dis-gusting. Good thing there are few ACC teams sadder than us. It’s indefensible. GERG level numbers. An average coach with average players should be middle of the pack of that group. Does Red / JW know we don’t get draft picks for tanking this season?

The AD should be extremely concerned about a massive selloff if major changes are not made offseason.
How do you what the AD is thinking. College basketball is down as a whole. Cuse's story is a little different. We could win 20+ games, make the NCAAT, still finish in the top three in the country in attendance and still lose a bunch of fannies.

Parking is up to $30 now in some of the lots. Losing makes it easier not to go, but even if we are winning, you can still sit home and watch a 75 inch that you can now buy for $500 or $600. The only downside is that you have to listen to Jay Williams or another clown call the game.

I'm not a big Wildhack fan, but seeing what he did with football, I feel good about how he will handle the basketball program.

Family of 4 can go to today’s game for $20. Total. Not per ticket. That’s what the market demand thinks of SU hoops. These are 1996 ticket prices. The cost of games is not an excuse for people not going.
It’s not about cost at this point. People just don’t want to waste 3 hours of their afternoon on this product.

Look at the win percentage from '14-'15 on.
This is probably more to your liking. We were so very fortunate to have JB here for all those years.

saw a whole lotta empty seats today. big $$$ seats.

The product is God-awful.

Attendances will continue down the backside of the bellcurve.

More importantly, those no-show big $$$ seats will also likely mean a hold on their checkbooks as well.

A situation like this will be sorted in major part by math.

A massive revenue shortfall in ticket sales, gameday concessions, and big $$$ donations will force a decision, as it should.

This is big business, after all.

Official attendance was 14,437.

Honestly, it doesn't seem bad. MSG seats 19.5k. We'd be at 75% capacity with the same number there. There's still a loyal fanbase out there. Whether the program economics works with 14k avg attendance is another question.

This is not complicated. Our team is not fun for fans to watch. Die-hard or not, watvhing this team is not a pleasent experience.

We have no stars on our team and we play with the effort of co-ed middle school PE class...

Why would any sane person buy a ticket to see this crap live while Adrian Autry is the coach...

We are awful. Coach must be fired. Every day we wait we are getting worse.

We give up open layups on every possession!!!

I'll never watch or buy a ticket again until Autry is gone. Its a disgrace.

This ^ 100%. Those who believe Red Is a lock for year 3 don't understand the current dynamics with NIL paid by the school and the issue with lingering conference realignment and the ACC ticking time bomb. The more things continue to bottom out the greater chance the Admin allows Wildhack to pull the plug. I'd still wager Red returning but it's far from a lock and is trending badly for him.

Actually, I am almost positive that it was Syracuse native Father Hesburgh who was president of ND at the time. It ushered in a lifetime of actively rooting against ND in my house.

I have to say that when we played at ND the fans were as nice to me as any opposing fans I have ever encountered. Still, their efforts at sucking up to me were no match for a grudge that began long ago. Screw ND.

I have often said the same thing..."Welcome to Notre Dame" was the most frequent comment I heard. Even the students cooking out on the green were welcoming. I must say things were a little different though after walking out of that stadium with a big W! Still not rude, but we were no longer making friends or being invited to have a dog and beer with them!

As others do I felt Red did a great coaching job last season. I understand his current situation but other than Kiyan and Sadiq I can't think of a single other reason he should keep his job beyond this season. It is undeniable that it will cost millions of dollars to rebuild this roster next season to support the incoming recruits and whomever sticks around. This is not a program continuity situation, that era is gone. Is Red the right guy to continue to re-build season after season? Its hard to keep thinking he is.

YES, you are correct. Father Hesburgh was from Syracuse and I remember the reports that after that game he would have to "sneak" into Syracuse to see his mother. Also the return game scheduled to be in Syracuse 2 years later was moved to Yankee Stadium because there was fear for the safety of the ND players appearing in Syracuse. I think we won that game 14-7 and searching way back in my memory I think there was a Syracuse punt return TD. In those days we could only listen to the broadcast of the games on the radio. I think Bill O'Donnell of then channel 3 did the play-by-play. Later Joel Mariness. The '61 game was shown on closed circuit TV at the War Memorial for a hefty fee. I remember my uncle went to watch it and was so mad after the game he walked back to his home on the East Side of the City forgetting he left his car parked downtown.

But the key question remains - can he coach?

He, can not.
I think he can be a middle of the pack ACC coach at best IF his guys are all bought in and he's had 3-4 years with them.

In todays game with portal and NIL he will never have that chance not to mention the middle of the pack puts him still in the constant position that we are looking at the bubble from afar. Not good enough anyway.

Just not worth it. If there's one thing we learned from Dino, this Kumbaya, players coach crap doesn't work on the hill. It gets you 1 good year out 8.
