Dino and the media

AND

The media goes out of their way to be impartial and not a part of the "community" almost to the point of absurdity and then when Dino points outwards at the audience (again, what public speakers do to denote "out there") they took it as "he was taking about us" ...

AND

They tweet about it instantly instead of actually thinking OR running the full quote.

So dumb.

I'd strongly recommend to anyone who hasn't actually watched the press conference to go do that. I first read the media piece, and was like wow can't believe Dino would call out the fan base like that, then I watched the press conference because I know that it is really hard to judge the point someone is trying to make without listening to the inflection in their voice, and looking at their body language.

This was another hack job by the local asylum looking for clicks and comments to drive ad revenue, and trying to stir up controversy where there was none. Dino wasn't calling the fan base immature or saying that we didn't know how to support a football team.

in 2 less Q, played at half the tempo

I used the last 2 quarters of Wake and first two quarters of UL, that's 4 quarters, same as the GT game Shafer coached. Not sure what your point about tempo is, points on the board is points on the board and looks the same at the end of the day. Defense = gashed

Carlson/Bailey/Axe and the old Cohen subscribe to theory if you talk about them it’s a win for their brands.
Screw them. I feel bad for the Syracuse locals who have to deal with them.
Nobody wants fanboys and nobody wants cynical aholeism.

I wish Dino would say nothing to them. Just do a Marshawn Lynch I am here so I am not fined and go on. The local media needs him more than he needs the local media.

Fans that care follow the team and bandwagoners will jump on if we win.

Scott Shafer was in over his head as a head football coach at a P5 school.
We are down 35-7 in the second quarter and he does this.

I will put this in terms you can understand as a Lions fan.
Scott Shafer =Marty Mornhinweg
Not a HC but an okay coordinator.

More like Schwartz as they both had a post-season appearance and were completely hot-headed and liked by their players but I get your point.

I'm going to add one more time. I don't want Shafer back as HC, I want Shafer style defense to crush the opposition while the offense is putting up 50+. Why can't we have both?

Ah - my fault. Here's the primer on why tempo matters (No, defense = gashed doesn't tell the full story). This might help the medicine go down

Faster tempo = More plays
More plays = more of a chance to score for both teams
This favors the team having an easier time scoring; those 4 Q you mention - it wasn't us

Against Wake, both teams were playing tempo. Louisville scored on big plays which also increases possessions. This the how the defense looks more gashed than past teams. Its the ugly underbelly of being a tempo team.

There it is. This is why I say not only does Dino's system give us a puncher's chance against the big boys, it gives the little boys a puncher's chance against us. You aren't just maximizing your own plays, you're maximizing your opponents as well, especially when you start killing yourself with drops/penalties. This is where my problem with the soft, bend but don't break, rush 3 drop 8 into zone drives me flipping crazy. I've heard the arguments that our injuries is what dictated that. Why? Why not still play man? Because they aren't good enough to cover in man? We aren't good enough to cover in zone when the QB gets to hold the ball for 5 seconds because we only rush 3 so why change?

I don't disagree. I think a Shafer style D would be interesting with this O.

I do think the system we run on D makes sense if your offense is better than the opponents offense. Most games (Wake this year and South Fl last year excluded) where we get a lead, our D hangs. Games where we are playing from behind? No go.

Meh, I don't know about some of you guys.

The local media/syracuse.com are not especially tough on this program at all. Occasionally someone will write a piece that is a over the line, like steaming pile of dung that Nate Mink produced glorifying the CMU kid Stanitzek for nearly decapitating Dungey. He deserved to be called out for that and he was.

But if you think Babers is going to move on to a bigger job and the local press corps is not going to be MORE aggressive (and the fans more demanding btw), you're kidding yourselves.

These guys are pretty tame. It's also the best corps of journalists to cover the program since the Maloney years. For those of who who would prefer Arnie Burdick...well, that ship sailed a long time ago. It went out with cheering in the press box.

Even in this latest tempest in a teacup, the aforementioned Mr Mink went into the comments section and essentially launched a defense of Babers yesterday, trying to put into context what Dino had meant.

I was going to say it's amazing that this thread has gone on for seven pages but...nah.

The people I listed suck as media.
I didn’t list Mink.
Waters is a pro.
He criticizes when basketball sucks and he gives praise when basketball does well. He doesn’t troll his readers.

I didn't say you listed Mink. I was the one who brought him up.

But I would say you're wrong about Carlson and Bailey.

Axe is what he is..."community engagement specialist" or whatever. I'm not sure whether that's a journalist.

Those guys IMO are cynical aholes who write to piss off hardcore fans.

I'm not going to change your mind. But IMO, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this sort of thing works.

He’s 100 percent right about Bailey. That is a FACT.

I get what their jobs are.
You can be a columnist and not troll your locals.
See Bob Ryan.
Or you can be a columnist who trolls locals.
See Dan Shaughnessy.

On the beat reporters they are just miserable Dino gives them nothing. Oh well.

What I meant is I can assure you that guys like this care not at all about "pissing off hard core fans," nor especially about pleasing them.

You are largely irrelevant to them -- really no more important than the casual reader who happens to peruse their article.

I guarantee they care a great deal about what Dino, his staff and the players think. Because they need to have some sort of relationship with those people to do their jobs.

Oh, I wasn’t saying tough. Opposite actually. Too thin skinned, little bit naive, too honest on twitter - and my fav: not empathetic enough with their audience.

You don’t have to be a cheerleader to understand how the info you’re relating would hit a diehard fan, player, or staff. You can deliver bad news in a way that says “I feel your pain” ... it may be twitter and access that it gives us to their inner-thoughts combined with immediacy that makes it feel like they are sticking it to us.
