Dino and the media

I know he pointed at the media but if you read his words it sounds like the kids may have gotten over confident and stopped working hard.

Agreed...i think he was implying the media went overboard with the celebration and it went to the players heads. I believe Saban refers to this as "rat poison".

Community? What? What the heck is he talking about? What’s the “community” supposed to do after a Herculean effort and performance VS Clemson. Like Waters said, Babers went on every media outlet doing interviews the immediate days after. Weird quote from Babers.

i think he is/was tired of all the bowl talk after beating clemson

I use the word “we” a lot when my kids don’t pick up after themselves. “Guys, we have to do a better job of doing our chores.”

Babers messed up a little here given how he directed the question, pointed to the press in answering the question.

It’s easy to say “the press took something out of context.” And that’s often true. In this case, Babers demonstrated frustration, which is highly unusual for such a measured public figure. This one deserves the scrutiny.

This wasn’t Kenneth Shaw-esque (“Get a life.”) but it wasn’t an innocent “La Familia” statement.

The guy saw a promising Bowl season go down to another season of the star QB not making it past the first week of November. And he’s frustrated. And passionate about what he does. But you don’t take the accolades and press car wash from an epic win without the anguish from fans and articles (which have NOT been really critical) from losing.

Totally give the guy a pass for being frustrated. Reality is, he said something in a manner he’d like a do-over on.

Just win Saturday.

Gosh, I read it and then listened to it.

He seemed pretty measured to me - I really didn't feel frustration - I was surprised I didn't

And I didn't take his comments as challenge directed toward the media.

But, I wasn't there.

Actually I never blame the waitress for a bad bar drink or food issues. If he kicked my dog I would literally probably kick him back, not post about it on an anonymous board, and the issue here is that while he's telling us how to handle success against Clemson he's making statement about people not wanting to play us. I think that back-fired big time. I think he fired up some other teams and then put the blame on the fanbase. It's Jake - get a life type stuff and it wasn't ok then and isn't ok now.

As for you and Finwad telling us not to take this football stuff so serious, did you guys defend Shafer for his ISIS comments? Because he was saying the same thing as you guys.

didn’t have any issues with the isis comment because I understood his point, I just wish coaches wouldn’t go there with that type of stuff. I believe immense pressure does funny things to people though and I couldn’t imagine being under that kind of scrutiny. Youth sports are bad enough.

His not play us comment was right on the money and it only meant that we’re not a freaking doormat anymore. What we used to call a stat game. Of course that was before we lost our QB. I didn’t mind it because it was a breath of fresh air and he was right. that’s me though, I’m not sports conservative and I like a little bravado.

That may have been the worst SU Football performance I have ever seen.

I'm not sure we ever touched the Ga Tech QB that day.
Guy was in way over his head as a head coach here. I did like his aggressive defensive though. Not trying to turn this into a debate between Babers and Shafer either.

This entire thread is a microcosm of our society right now... Everybody take a tissue... Jesus Christ, could anything matter less?
Who needs a tissue, this is not arousing at all

1.) Why pick a fight with the local media? In a small market like Syracuse, it shouldn't be that hard to keep the media on your side. Be friendly, throw them a few bones every once in a while and don't admonish them for hyping your team/program.

2.) Mike Waters makes an excellent point. No one was hyping this team more than Dino. No one. He made all the national media rounds after the Clemson game. He was the one saying that no team left on our schedule wanted to play us. He was the one making proclamations about year 2, game 4 is when the system starts to click. I don't bemoan him doing any of this, but don't try to deflect blame after the fact when things don't quite work out how you may have envisioned them.

3.) How can the community (or media) learn how to handle success when there has barely been any? We've had a big win in each of the first two seasons under Dino. After those wins, the team is a combined 1-8 (poised to be 1-9 after this weekend). Success is not winning one game a year where you are a big underdog. He's said it himself: “I want them to be consistently good, not occasionally great." If that's the definition of a successful program, then we certainly aren't there yet, so there is no way to judge how we will or won't be able to handle success.

Probably making a mountain out of a mole hill here, but something about the comment irked me. It's just a dumb comment to make and has zero basis in reality.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, I think Dino is absolutely the guy for the job, and this doesn't change those feelings. But a little self-awareness goes a long way, and if you're looking to build a program from the bottom up, shifting some of the blame off yourself, your staff and your players and onto the media and fans' expectations isn't the right route to take.

You are spot on. Wow, very hypocritical if Dino. Saying as a fanbase and community we need to better handle winning like the Clemson game? Whoa, excuse me. Wow, Dino was all over the map the days after our big win. Remember, HE, and HE only allows those cameras into the locker room, and its only to set up his self serving speeches, that YES, also give the program some pub. But, sorry, this last comment is kinda a slap in the face to community and fanbase. And if previous HCs made similar comments, they would have been slammed. Dino has gotten a pass this far but hos comments are soooo fair weather. The team has folded the last 2 weeks with convenient excuses like depth but again this was about the D missing one starter. Bad look , Dino, i love you and think you could be the guy but bad look with saying the fanbase didn't react correctly after Clemson, only after the last 2 apathetic losses.

Seriously? You’ve had him leaving 10
times the past two years yourself.
Not once did i ever say i wanted Dino to leave. I have always wanted SU to extend his contract.

Dino was talking about the community, NOT the media.

If you watch the video and don't listen to the idiots int he media, he was talking about the SU FOOTBALL COMMUNITY MEANING THE COACHING STAFF AND TEAM.

He absolutely did not mean the actual media or the community at large being the fans.

When he says community and then says we didn't handle it well, he is not talking about anyone outside the locker room. He even says as much in his statement.

Stop reading what idiots are typing and watch the press conference for God sakes. Watch the tape and don't read the transcript.

Personally I think this is crap. IF HCDB wanted to keep the comment to the team needing to handle it better that would have been fine, but I have been fairly consistent in my belief that he needs to stop telling fans how to be fans and focus on coaching his team. If he takes care of the latter, he won't have to worry about the prior.

100%. BS Dino. Dino always makes sure the cameras are pointed in his direction when he is ready to self promote after a big win. BS Dino, sorry, hypocritical. Waaay too much time on the media instead of worrying why wards 11 guys are giving up 700+ yards.

I'm so tired of the hidden little digs, yes I r dum bekuze I think we have bad D, but it's not just 6 quarters. How do we rank in PPG given up? YPP? YPG? They don't just pick the last 6 quarters when posting those stats. Our D is bad, whether you think I r dum r not.

Agree, plenty of hidden digs, thinks he is smarter than everyone in the room and all of the fanbase.

That's even worse. When you have been outscored 100-12 in the last 6 quarters or whatever it is, its probably not the best time to take a shot at whats left of a shattered fan base. I like Babers a lot but he needs to look in the mirror on this one.

Dino doesn't look in the mirror much. Its either:

1. The qb plays reckless
2. We are young and learning the system and it will pop on week x, on leap year x.
3. We lack depth at key positions, all after we played 3 weeks on a row with blueblood programs.

And when we win, the cameras make their way miraculously into the locker room and it was the speech that did it. No looking in the mirror about why the team came out flat the last 2 weeks with a bowl on the line. No comments about the D system. It isn't injuries, only missing Martin on D.

Some people just have to have drama. We're SU fans...our skin should be thicker than over reacting to something like this.

Lol, whatever, Dino introduced the drama here.

If you were given AD powers, would you fire him?

Not yet, but ya know what, he isnt the end all, be all. He is very preachy and self promoting and what scares me is , he let ED get larger with the team than, well, the team! Cant come out that flat with the backup qb. The last 2 games are on cosching, not talent, which all of the Dino apologists love to throw around.

Then, there were the Clemson win comments which are a total turnoff. Wow, Dino used that game to self promote and to call out cuse and the fanbase was , well, weak and hypocritical.

you're loving this aren't you? why not just be honest.

I'm not going that far with it. Just thought it was a weird comment to make and a bit of a deflection.

I LOVE DINO, didn't care for his comments today. I know 8 season ticket holders blowing off the game for various reasons stated on this board. Dino needs to get over his self promoting preaching and get real with his team.

We are tired of losing and these last 6 quarters were worse than anything we ever saw from Shafer and border on Gerg levels of terrible. Yes there were some who were convinced we could run the table but I think most people simply felt like our bowl chances were better than ever after Pitt/Clemson so to turn back into a Gergian level team after the 1st half at Wake is kind of a big kick in the testes.
I wouldn't say the last 6 quarters were worse than anything from Shaf.

Shaf, God love him, had some similarly catastrophic runs.

The Joe Fields Purdue game was pretty darn close...

It was close.

I was at that one as well.

It was hot - Kyle Orton was at his best - the Purdue train blast was endless as the Boilermakers continued to score and Joe Fields was clearly not ready to play.

At least it didn't rain that day - I traveled to Ga Tech the morning of the game thinking that it would be a nice day trip. I didn't think it would rain. I got drenched at Bobby Dodd.
