Dino Finalizes 2020 Coaching Staff

Syracuse head football coach Dino Babers has finalized his coaching staff for the 2020 season, it was announced on Tuesday. Babers hired three new assistant coaches this offseason and retained seven members from last year's staff.

Sterlin Gilbert, an experienced playcaller and the head coach at McNeese State in 2019, was hired in January to coordinate of the offense and coach Syracuse's quarterbacks. In addition to Gilbert, the offensive staff includes:
  • Mike Cavanaugh – Offensive Line
  • Reno Ferri – Tight Ends/Inside Receivers
  • Justin Lustig – Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/Outside Receivers
  • Mike Lynch – Running Backs
Tony White, a dynamic recruiter who served as the cornerbacks coach and defensive passing game coordinator at Arizona State for the last two seasons, was named the Orange's defensive coordinator last week. In addition to White, the defensive staff includes:
  • Nick Monroe – Safeties/Nickelbacks
  • Vinson Reynolds – Defensive Line
  • Steve Stanard – Linebackers
  • Chip West – Cornerbacks
Syracuse's 10 assistant coaches have combined to coach in 59 bowl games and send dozens of players to the NFL. Additionally, Stanard and West have both won FCS national championships in their careers. Stanard has two rings (2012, 2013) from his time as linebackers coach at North Dakota State, while West was the defensive backs coach James Madison in 2004 when the Dukes won their first title.

Cavanaugh/Reynolds need to prove their coaching chops this season. Can't have underperformance on the lines. I like how everything lines up though.

Interesting that White isn't coaching a specific position, wonder if that's intentional for the install. Maybe he'll pick something up next season.

I suspect this is a transition year.

Some guys will mesh with the new coordinators. Other guys will be brought in by the coordinators next year that they already have relationships with
It'll blend over time.

I mentioned that I thought this could happen a few days ago, due to the entire staff's unfamiliarity with the intricacies of the 3-3-5. This allows White to jump around and help all the various positions in the defense. Looking at his bio, Stanard actually has significantly more experience coaching LB than DL, so I think it makes a lot of sense.

Im not sure Cav will be allowed a transition year, I’m pretty comfortable in saying his seats the opposite of chilly.

I agree with the other posters. My biggest concerns are cavenaugh and Reynolds. I hope there is a vast improvement with the lines. If not I do not think wildhack will give HCDB a choice on replacement. Wildhack is willing to spend money for improvement but he will expect results for the investment.

ADs dictating assistant hiring/firing is a pretty extreme measure, especially at the position coach level.

Huh? You don't think Dino will be allowed to hire his own position coaches?

Exactly. This is Dino's baby for better or worse. JW is giving him all the rope he needs and appears to be all-in. These next few years are a monumental investment we're making in Dino. If successful it can take us to the next level, if not, we'll have years of rebuilding ahead.

I think Cavanaugh is safe. He was dealt a tough hand having to keep Servais and Vettorello out of position so long. And I'm not sure who was responsible for the Ryan Alexander fiasco.

Hopefully he gets Bleich availability in 2020.

Bleich is key. If his waiver is granted our ceiling (and floor) on offense goes up significantly, imo.

I think Cav is safe as well. It's not lost on Dino that he had a freshman left tackle and a dud at right tackle and then was forced to put a true freshman in at right tackle. Cav should get some credit for the line stabilizing a little bit after the changes were made. Though it'll be a key year for him.

(Keep in mind Lynch (OL) is still here and Travis Greene (RB) is still listed as a Grad Assistant.)

Yep, last 3 games were so different. People should watch and compare (if their eyes can stand the first 9 games).

Not saying we were great. But it at least looked normal. We could run the ball, only gave up 5 sacks over those 3 games. A different offense, and a 2-1 record. Defense against Louisville was too atrocious to overcome.

Cav will need to prove he can bring OL talent to CNY as well. Yes, the hand he was dealt in 2019 was tough, but he’s been brought here to rebuild a young depleted line.

Looks good. Looking forward to a bounce back year by the program.

Let’s go Orange!

Based on the new coaches' previous results (and the new dome), I'm looking for a 1.5 tick bump in recruiting results in 2021 and another one in 2022, which should get us close to where we think we should be. A couple of good seasons on the field and maybe we can another bump up in 2023, which would get us close to where we hope to be.

Please God get someone else to be the backup center ...

That is both 100% true and a funny commentary on the current state of the industry. Director of Athletics...limited background in athletics. Makes sense.
The problem with ADs with an athletic background they can sometimes favor the sport they played. ADJW was a high level executive at ESPN so he hopefully can knock it out of the park on the administrative and alumni/fan relations part.
