Dino / Players Postgame Presser | Notre Dame

His opening statement is concerning about staying together.

That's the face and tone of a man who just got beaten after coming home early after getting laid off, then watching his dog get hit by a car, shortly after finding his wife in bed with his best friend.

What are you referring to? I may not be on the same page but I hear him talking about getting enough guys healthy to put a decent performance together. Wrong part of interview? Time?

I thought it was a good presser. Very little coach speak. Acknowledges that he just didn't have the horses to stop the running game. Explains his decisions. Fact is Shrader came into the game hurt, got his ankle rolled. Sure Dino prob could have pulled him earlier but he's the leader on offense so that has to be part of the thought process. 6-2 is still a gem at this point. Not good enough on O today to keep the D fresh. They wore us down. Shite happens.

Is our strength and conditioning staff sufficient?
It seems like all the guys getting pushed around are bigger and stronger than when they arrived, so I would say yes. We just need guys that start out bigger and are athletic enough to run our scheme

The group of interior line is all super young too...haven't had a chance to grow up. Lockette, Fuentes, and Darton are all underclassmen. Bassette will get into the rotation next year and based on what I've seen Hough will join that group too. Could be a strength going forward.

CDRW was way better than a C, I think Dino will see that when he goes back and watches the tape

I didn’t watch it, did he really say he was a C? Minus a couple mistakes he threw some great balls for a guy sitting the bench. If DB said that it’s coach speak so when he puts a hobbling GS in next game it’s because CDRW only got a C last game.

If he’s a C what grade did GS have before he was pulled?

Dino does not think he was a C. It’s impossible to watch his performance and give him that grade. I think Dino is purposefully trying to tamp down any enthusiasm for CDRW’s performance so that a QB controversy doesn’t develop. I can see right through it easily.

You mean "4-5 star recruits".

I was having this discussion with my dad post game. Cuse plays with great energy and effort. Players are developing and putting in the strength work. However, at the end of the day no matter how time you spend in the gym you will not be big and strong enough to compete with what ND (and teams that recruit like that) had on their offensive line. ND bullied us and just pushed our defense around . You need bigger and better players and those are usually the 4 and 5 stars that have a higher base that you can build on. Cuse fights and will keep fighting but there’s a limit to who we can beat with what we have.

Cuse!

Or finding his best friend in bed with the dog and his wife getting hit by a car

The only QB controversy is on this board. That’s really the extent of it. If Garrett is hurt next week, he’ll probably sit. If not, he’ll start. He has earned his spot and he’s our starter.

Yeah. Ultimately to beat the 4 and 5 star players we're gonna need more of them.

Wake is winning (last night & Clemson excepted) without 4 & 5 star players.

That’s how we’re gonna hafta do it:
Develop our good 3 star guys so they play like 4*’s.
See: Mikel, Wax, Tuck, Berg, Gadsden, Duce, GW, et al.

Sprinkle in some 4 star guys however we can get them
See: Shrader, CDRW.

We may not ever get a ton of HS 4* dudes, but we can land a ton of high 3* guys, and then try to attract additional needed talent via the Portal.

Yeah, we should be better. We'll see how much bigger the young guys can get. They're good at causing disruption against less physical teams. Can they get to where they can hold up against the physical teams? Ultimately, we need to stay healthy too. Losing Locket this year hurt.

Nearly everything points to the potential to be better all over the field next year.

I also suspect, and this is purely my speculation based on observing the few times that CD-RW has come in, that CD-RW is brimming with confidence and Babers doesn't want him to become overconfident.

Which is very fair, because even though he showed some exciting abilities, reality is we still lost, and he wasn't immune to being a contributor to the losing effort (although he was put in a very difficult spot).

I didn't say a ton, and I wasn't the one that originally said 4 and 5 stars, OrangeExtreme did. Someone questioned our strength and conditioning. I pointed out that that's not the problem. The guys are bigger and stronger than when they arrived. I said if we're going to have bigger guys on the line, we'll have to recruit guys that start out bigger that can remain athletic enough for our system. OrangeExtreme said those are 4 and 5 star guys. He's probably right.
