DL Steve Linton transferring from Texas Tech to Baylor

I assume he’s a scratch for the bowl game then to.

That makes us pretty thin unless we get some kids back. McDonald and Simmons gone to mind.

It’s too bad, kid can make plays. But he was used as a situational player to limit his snaps to increase availability.

Returning DE’s, Caleb, Geer, Simmons, Jobity, Jaquez, Nolton. Jalil Smith coming in.

It’s not the end of the world.

Agree, this is the first one that has an impact, but doesn't mean we can't replace with a transfer of our own.

He seemed like a bit of tweener in Tony White's system. Probably looking for an OLB spot somewhere.

This is a loss imo but I think they will bring in a guy that fits the scheme better and can play on any down. Linton couldnt gain enough weight to be a true 5 tech. He can play somewhere as a traditional DE. He's a great athlete. I wish him well. If he can get to 250, watch out.
Whether it comes out or not, I think there is some degree of “blaming” the program for his inability to gain weight.

At 217lbs he had a good season, but we need better players than this period. He’s quick, no doubt, gets washed out too easily when engaged. Hopefully they can replace him, but we continue to struggle with recruiting. I would hope we’d have more success in the portal/Juco with recruiting players looking for a second opportunity, but struggle there as well. This, perhaps more than anything, it the downside of the five game slide this year.

There are three down guys already on the roster than can take his snaps at a replacement or better level.

So while I acknowledge this is a true loss

Watch out for Leon Lowery becoming more effective in Steve’s past role.
Lowery gets in the backfield lightening fast. Agree he could benefit.

Its not an enormous loss but sad to lose him. He definitely has value as a pass rushing specialist. Not completely surprised he's leaving though as their are other defenses better suited to his skillset if he adds around 10 lbs. But watch him bulk up to 240 lbs after he leaves. That would be frustrating. In our base set I think he we need a player that is at least around that weight.

Will be interesting to see where he ends up. He has talent, but do Power 5 schools want to bring in a 219 pound DL?

Another victim of the dreaded end of the season meeting.... probably didn't like how he would be used next year without a weight gain ..... we need more size across the DL... jmho

S&C needs some improvement but its way too casual to point out 1 single player out of 100 and use him to represent the work of an entire program. The staff turned a mediocre FCS D lineman into a 1st team all acc player. The DL unit was already the weakest going into the season. Losing their best interior DT along with 2 others for the season had a lot to do with downside as well. Linton was pretty physical at 217. Can you imagine how good he could be if he got to 240? That's on him. He told me straight up that he couldn't keep the weight on.

The Portal taketh and the portal giveth. Time to giveth, staff!
I just hope it giveth close or better than what we just lost. With a little more size he could have been amazing. I know, it is what it is but it sucks.

Yep. For every portal win someone else has to lose. All that matters is we net out to the positive come spring.
We're not getting out of the portal unscathed.

Our borderline players aren't moving on up either to better programs imo. Linton was situational. He should move to a lesser program/conference for more playing time. To that, I say good luck! That's a great move for him.

Wish him luck and hope he finds more snaps (that's my guess).

I agree with others here about his size. He could jack up at another school but SU's DE corps seems to have guys ready.

Meh. He’s proven he can’t gain weight.
Weight or not he’s a menace when he’s on the field. Didn’t matter that he didn’t weigh 25lbs more he was one of the only DL players that made big plays. I’ll take Steve. Any day of the week over some random guy that weighs 25lbs more and fits the profile. This is a huge loss for an already weak unit.
