Donnie Freeman injures foot

Apologies take Lampkin out then. Donnie is still our best overall player. I can't believe people on the board are complaining about him. He was the least of our problems.
Complaining about his defense is a completely reasonable thing! If it goes beyond that I would agree, but he is seriously bad at defense, and it hurt us when he was on the court.

I think Donnie has serious weaknesses with his defense, BUT on a team of weak defenders he wasn't the worst.

I'd be happy if he was back playing, but he's not and the swirling rumors are that we've seen the last of him in a Syracuse uniform, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Play defense is also like an OL. You can get individual grades, but you really need to be coached well and have a competently coached system in place.

We are so bad at defense that I'm not as concerned with individual D because it doesn't really matter.

We were supposed to be an offensive team this year... and, well, JC, Eddie, etc etc.

Imagine if I tried using this excuse with any other player. I would get laughed at, and rightfully so. Part of our defense being bad is the staff, but part of it is that we have several individuals who are just plain bad at defense and would be in any uniform on any team. As of now, Donnie Freeman is one of those individuals. Everyone else being pretty darn bad does not make it any less of a problem.

The team was constructed for offense. Getting Eddie and paying him a ton of money = we were going to be bad at D.

On the list of our issues, Donnie's being bad at D isn't at the top.

You are stomping out a cigarette in the middle of a forest fire with it. it's not an excuse, it's about priorities.

There’s more to defense than blocked shots. His overall defensive metrics are better than the guys I mentioned.
so hes better than HORRIBLE defenders?

thats not the ringing endorsement youre making it to be

for SYRACUSE to be a winning team...they need defenders better than carlos, bell, moore, and yes donnie

and no lampkin is not a worse defender than donnie...lampkins man rarely scores...eddie just is very bad at help defense and rim protection...but hes a much better man to man defnder than donnie at this stage

I LIKE DONNIE as a player! dont get it twisted

i just think we have to be real that his defense is a negative at the moment

eddies man rarely puts up big numbers in any game

eddie just doesnt clean up ANY mistakes from the rest of the team...which is it really technically his fault?

if youre going with guards and forwards who cannot defend you NEED a rim protector...thats not really eddies fault, per se

Exactly.. he's lazy on the d side of the ball

It's a poorly constructed roster. Whether that's because of poor allocation of resources or just bad judgement that's on the coaching staff.

More specifically, focus on the starting lineup and the top 2 or 3 reserves who contribute. The full roster rarely makes a difference. We are playing guards who would not play on a good team. And we are short a good forward, compounded by Freeman being out.

Yes, it is on the staff - for not landing a better portal guard. They tried and missed. So obvious, hardly needs saying.

As per Donna, Donnie has made the trip to Cali. I wonder if that's good news.
If he is done playing I'd rather he not be on the team. So hopefully Red gets this and because he is traveling he is still Orange.

Done playing to go off to the NBA, or is he expected to transfer?

He isn't ready for the NBA.

G League needs players too, tho.
There are a lot of posts here saying so and so isn't ready ... then they leave for the NBA. No guarantees in life, if someone is getting an opportunity for the NBA, they're taking it and not waiting. KJo, CJ Fair and Tyus stuck around and it didn't do them any good.

All these kids have agents now that are bigging them up and telling them what they want to hear in a lot of cases.

Often times an agent wants a cut of any deal as soon as they can get it.

It doesn't mean that declaring for the NBA is the right move... especially if you don't go in the 1st two rounds of the draft.

Having just watched an NBA game up close 14 rows up, it is obviously a whole new level of competition and athletes! I didn’t have a true sense of the physicality of the pro game until seeing it in person. Donnie is many years away from playing in the NBA, both from a skill set and physical standpoint. So not sure what he is planning on doing as far as another year or two of school (hopefully still with Cuse) or the G-league to continue to develop and gain weight, but best of luck to whatever he decides.

Everyone that is drafted goes in the first and last two rounds of the draft.

There is 0.00% chance he gets drafted in the first round. Unless Billy King or someone of that ilk is the GM of a team and making promises again.

Second round... maybe... but even then... need a little more body of work than 15 games.

if I had a nickel for every stupid NBA draft decision from the past 30 years, I'd have my own NBA team. Well, maybe if I also had a nickel for every stupid CIncinnati Bengal top 5 draft pick. But there it is.
