Drew Allen. Commits

What GO stated is true...but DM also didn't want to ruin Nassib's confidence by continuously running for his life. From the horse's mouth.
Well, ok. Case closed. Must have been kind of a funny pitch to Paulus - Hey Greg, you can come in and start, be a hometown hero... but the line isn't good so get used to running for your life, and if it destroys your confidence, hey, you're only playing for a year anyway, right? Alrighty, see you on campus.

IMO, Drew is a good pickup; this has to be tough for Charlie though. Another plus with this is that his commitment does not hurt out recruiting at QB for this next class.

I am confident that wherever he is a player, RGLCL will make several pass attempts that will be completed, and result in scores.

after seeing that piece of film of him someone linked (did you see that lateral movement, escapability, and arm strength), this in combination with the intangibles of what someone posted above has been his recent experience, his intelligence, etc, I would be shocked if he's not our starter come fall. In fact mark it down this kid barring the unforeseen will be leading the orange this year.

Fixed that recruiting pitch for you.

He probably told Paulus that he could come in and be the starting QB for his hometown school and left it at that.

If Paulus didn't want to do the research to understand how shitty of a line he was inheriting, well, buyer beware.

I agree. No slight to the QBs on the roster now but Allen's film shows him to be at another level than our current guys. I hope in another year, that will no longer be the case.

Agreed, it needs to be the case. That also implies that it wont be someone on the current spring roster going forward. Kimble, AJ Long and whoever else need to be at that level.

Same as Russell Wilson at Wisconsin, he already graduated.
No, Russell Wilson was dismissed from the team and released of his scholarship, as pat O'brien wanted to go with Glennon.

Facts:
2007 - Redshirt Year
2008 - Believe he started the last half of the year @ QB for NC St.
2009 - Started every game @ QB for NC St.
2010 - Started every game @ QB for NCSt. Also graduated from school and decided prior to spring semester that he would play baseball in the Rockies system. Was released from Scholly, as you suggested, leaving a year of eligibility.
2011 - Started every game @ QB for Wisconsin. Under transfer rules (which include release from scholly similar to Funderburk), he would have had to sit-out unless transferring to get a graduate degree not offered at undergrad school. This is the same situation Drew Allen will be able to play at SU in 2013 w/o having to sit a season.

EDIT - Story discussing Wilson's situation - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...es/06/27/wilson.transfer.wisconsin/index.html

In a release issued by the school Friday evening, O’Brien announced that Wilson — third in school history in passing yards (8,645) and second in passing touchdowns (76) — has been released from his NCSU scholarship and is free to transfer to another school if he still desires to play football at the collegiate level. The decision to release Wilson also makes it crystal clear what O’Brien has been stating for a month a more: Mike Glennon is his starter at QB for the 2011 season.

He was still released, just Happen to be a senior by chance and graduated.

Wrong.. you have to be released from scholly to transfer from a D1 program to a D1 program, regardless. I repeat, all transfers are released. And even then the person is subject to the transfer rules requiring him to sit a year... unless... the person graduated and the program he formerly attended doesn't offer his graduate degree program, however, the program to which he transfers to offers his graduate degree program. In that circumstance, the player is allowed immediate eligibility.

This was one thing the NCAA actually did right to protect the student athlete.

I know this but it's not like he was the backup. He was the starter acc runner up player of the year and they basically cut him by telling him that he won't start as a senior. Just happens that he could transfer out since he was graduating, and of course he was released of his scholarship. He would be at nc state if not for losing his job, this is not the same as a backup holding a clip board for 4 years. Wilson would never even transfer if he had his job, then again aren't all release like this, where the guy is not going I play, so it's moot. It's not like Wilson initiated the transfer request.

Fair enough. Was more arguing the rules and not the reasons behind the situation. Apologies for not catching your drift.

Little wonder State was also looking at Drew Allen...

NC State’s Doeren Looking For Wolfpack’s Next QB

Associated Press
April 17, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State is looking for a new quarterback to go with its new offense.
Coach Dave Doeren is wrapping up his first set of spring practices with a competition between Colorado State transfer Pete Thomas and Manny Stocker. The winner will inherit the starting job first held by Russell Wilson - who later transferred to Wisconsin and is now with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks - then Mike Glennon, a potential first-round draft pick later this month.
“They’re getting better,” Doeren said. “I told somebody the other day: I just don’t think it’s fair to make a decision on a guy that doesn’t know your offense yet. I think we’ve got to give those kids a chance to play football without thinking. We’re not there yet.”
Both Thomas and Stocker have earned first-team snaps through the spring while the entire team transitions to the schemes Doeren brought with him from Northern Illinois. They’re listed atop the latest depth chart posted Wednesday on team’s web site in advance of Saturday’s spring game.
Thomas, a 6-foot-5 junior from El Cajon, Calif., started for two seasons with Colorado State and threw for 4,269 yards and 18 touchdowns in those two years. He sat out last year after transferring to Raleigh.
Stocker, a 6-1 sophomore from Coatesville, Pa., played in five games behind Glennon last season. He threw two incompletions and ran for 18 yards on the year.
The most immediate challenge for both players, aside from learning plays and terminology, is directing the offense to move at a faster tempo in practice and eventually games.
Matt Canada, the Wolfpack’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, wants both players focused on taking care of the ball and avoiding major mistakes.
“I’m not asking them to do things outside of their skillset,” said Canada, who was Doeren’s offensive coordinator in 2011 before spending last season in the same role at Wisconsin. “I just want them to manage the game and lead us. And to do that, they have to be a student of the game and they have to be a cool customer. … Be who you are and be true to yourself, but you’ve got to be level.”
Thomas said he’s been focused on making steady progress through spring drills. The more reps, the better.
“It’s cliche but you do get better every single day,” Thomas said. “You can throw however much you want in the summer or the offseason, but there’s nothing like practice - being out here running the plays with pads on and the coaches and everything.
“Decision-making is huge. With this offense, you have a lot of options at quarterback. You have to be able to make the right reads, whether it’s the run game or the passing game.”
Doeren said those gains are showing up more often in practices. He mentioned Thomas and Stocker going from overthrowing wide-open guys during the first instrasquad scrimmage to more consistently connecting with those receivers in later workouts.
And that, Stocker said, has led to more confidence for both quarterbacks.
“When you know the offense, you’re very confident in the throws that you make,” Stocker said. “When you don’t know the offense, you don’t know the route, you don’t know how he’s going to run it or you don’t know where it’s going. It’s easier to make the throws when you know the complete offense, and confidence comes with that.”
Doeren said the Wolfpack coaches have installed a lot of pieces of the offense in hopes of finding what the players could and couldn’t do well. The plan is to scale some parts back and install more this fall that is better tailored to his new roster.
“We’re going to strive for perfection and settle for excellent,” Canada said. “We always want more. That’s the only way we know to do it.”

An ex-OU QB who leaves for his 5th year of eligibility, after never playing, nor being in the team's plans, just wants to find a place where he can compete. Not every school wants to bring in a 1 year guy.

If he doesn't win the job, then he's an insurance policy. Either for injury or ineffectiveness, both very possible for SU in 2013.

All the staff could promise him was a chance to compete for the starting job, nothing more. I think this is a great pickup, but I think people are way too quick to anoint him the starter. He has just as many unknowns.
i just cant imagine him taking a flyer on Syracuse. there has to be some transfer of knowledge. somebody with a brain and a knack for spotting talent, outside of the Syracuse staff telling him he can compete for the job, has got to have told him that the path with least resisitance is in the Dome.

got to think marrone and & hackett are the birdies in his camps ear.

Oh Lord

I don't disagree that someone let this kid know that SU could be a nice path to the NFL, but it's not like every single BCS school is lining up for a one and done who spent 4 years on the bench at OU. The most logical place to start looking is schools with a new staff who lost a starting QB and have zero experience returning. Wasn't surprising to me to see SU and NC State as the finalists as both are ideal in that regard. Nassib's press climbing the NFL draft charts probably didn't hurt either as far as putting SU on his radar.
