Drexel Postgame Thoughts...

Regular season college basketball, baby! It’s fannnnntastic!

Seriously, it’s a shame how irrelevant the sport has become prior to March.
I think this was just a badly planned back to back. Didn’t announce times until a week or so ago, picked two of the more irrelevant local teams plus a Penn state team who hasn’t been good in a decade and then didn’t do any promotion locally (I’m from Philly). All in all, brutal marketing and bad match making. Should’ve done a two day “tournament” to get a Penn state - Syracuse matchup

For sure, that’s all correct. I was just being sarcastic.

There were barely any Penn State fans there too. It was an odd event thrown together. If we had been better the last few years, I suspect we would have had even more of a dominating crowd advantage.

Great start so far.

My one concern continues to be the fact that we seem to be a pretty lousy rebounding team. In our 3 games versus cupcakes, we were out-rebounded by one of them, we were equaled by another, and we barely out-rebounded the third.

That has to significantly change once we start playing the big boys.
Agree on overall rebounding we need to improve.

BUT Drexel is one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the country so far (small sample size, not good comp either).

Averaging 14.0 offensive rebs per game so far through 4 games they've played good for #27 in the country.

Anybody else notice that Kiyan is constantly untucking his jersey? I assume it's just a nervous tic?

So here’s the thing- nothing has changed since last year, but the players. So is red all of a sudden a great coach for those who said he sucked last year? Same system, same everything, but guys who want to play harder without the coach begging them to. This isn’t an I told you so thing, but players that don’t want to play defense versus players that do is pretty telling… yes I know it’s early but we all know what this team could be

JJ is reds guy but he’s realizing they can win without him playing 35 mins a game. If he’s not playing well, he ain’t playing him
The days of guys playing 35 or minutes a game are over. This team will be good because of their depth. You can’t play this level of defense playing 6-7 guys. We really have five guards that can play.

I do think things have changed. They didn’t throw up all over themselves from April through July this year as they did the year prior.

Red’s the guy that assembled last year’s team. It was a catastrophic failure of talent evaluation and NIL fundraising. I’m very glad this past offseason he acquired guys who want to play defense.

Coaches can also improve though too. Especially when you’re such a rookie.

Alex and Red killed it re roster construction. Put up or shut up season, and we’re off to a great start. Very exciting.
Happy for any win but Still waiting to see and make a judgement how we are playing other than an early OOC team.

He's a strong defender, has a good energy to his game.
Agree. I feel like our defense is better when Zephir is in there than with Fennel. He’s pretty clearly a better defensive player, and that fits really well with the identity of this team. Obviously there is still a big role for Fennel and he should get decent minutes, just speaking defensively.

I'm watching this BYU UCONN game and you can't take the clown out of Hurley.

They run some smooth offense but they play cheap defense. Annoying to watch.

Just a trash program.

I did like seeing them throw in a possession of 2-3 zone in the 2nd half, when Soare was in the game.

SU could literally wear garbage bags for uniforms if it meant we’d win as many titles as UConn. They won the war, man. It’s best to not talk about them.

I'll see them in Hell.

You know how money can't buy class?

Well, UCONN's winning doesn't change that they're trash.

The second half was just so enjoyable from a defensive standpoint. There is nothing sexier than watching our guys SWAT balls off the backboard.
-a lot of nice contributions today. Kyle is such a difference maker and what so many of us have been wanting, an athletic, strong, big man.
-Kiyan was just as described by the announcers, under control and professional, and helped us hold things together in the first half
-he wasn’t perfect, but I liked what I saw from George. Under control and crafty. Takes good care of the ball with no bad turnovers, which has been a problem for us at the point for years now.
-kingz is not making his shot yet, but I liked a lot of what I saw from him. Going to the basket with good ball skills. Plays good defense. Buy stock in him now because I’m sure that shot is going to go down soon.
-would like to see Donnie fade away less and go to the basket strong more. He does undersized defenders a favor by fading away and minimizes his chances of going to the line.
-things feel different. Guys are flying off the bench and giving everything they have. We are getting loose balls and blocking shots and deflecting passes, all things we haven’t been doing for the past five years. Guys are supporting one another and are all in. Hard not to be very excited right now.

I don’t like UConn, but they have athletes and assert their will. Syracuse has athletes as well and can play that way too and have been doing so against lower competition.
