Drexel Postgame Thoughts...

That's ok. We don't want him to be so good that JJ doesn't play. That would be bad for chemistry. I want JJ to also be a contributor, but not the alpha. I want our defense to be the alpha on this team.
I want JJ to be the best player on the floor.

No questions. Reds hardest thing he had to do in the last year was get rid of RC. But it’s paying off 10x
especially what we saw in the second half today.
This is the polar opposite of the past two years.

I feel like we were up 4, 7, 9 points and lost - see: Pitt, SMU, and Virginia Tech.
And laboring through tiny wins over Colgate and Le Moyne was rough.
(credit for coming back vs. Texas, but other than that...)

Great start so far.

My one concern continues to be the fact that we seem to be a pretty lousy rebounding team. In our 3 games versus cupcakes, we were out-rebounded by one of them, we were equaled by another, and we barely out-rebounded the third.

That has to significantly change once we start playing the big boys.

Mostly it's on Donnie. If he's going to play close to 30 minutes, he has to work harder on boards.
If he's not, then Sadiq needs some of his time. Sadiq is too good, and too strong defensively for Donnie to be coasting on defense or not working on the boards.

Donnie’s defensive intensity is way way better. He looks quicker on D and is staying in front of guys that he couldn’t last year.

If he fought for rebounding position as well as Kyle does, he could be an All American.
Well, he has to attack the rim more, too. But the talent is clearly there.

He knows he has to play defense to get to the league. Even though they don’t play defense in NBA. This was a big thing told to him if he wants to get drafted highly this year. Him getting in NG face today was the turning point in the game today. Leadership the right way

They most certainly play defense in the NBA. The playoffs are practically like rugby.

i dont think its effort...i think its ability

JJ has the necessary athleticism to be a pretty good defender. He just has to be better about moving his feet laterally, and not letting guys get around the corner so easily on him on the pick & roll.

So here’s the thing- nothing has changed since last year, but the players. So is red all of a sudden a great coach for those who said he sucked last year? Same system, same everything, but guys who want to play harder without the coach begging them to. This isn’t an I told you so thing, but players that don’t want to play defense versus players that do is pretty telling… yes I know it’s early but we all know what this team could be
part of being a coach - a HUGe part - is roster construction

cant assess a coach independently of his roster

and theyve only played cupcakes thus far...still early

Great 2nd half defensively. I think the foundation of this team this year might be defense. Team still developing their offensive identity. Next few games will be telling to see how we stack up against the best.
That's what I thought before, and that's a good thing. Defense can always be there and win games even when the shots don't fall.

i think he gets mentally lost on defense...turning his head and not shfiting quickly enough...he just seems totall lost on the team defense aspect, always looking in the wrong direction at the wrong time...not sure what it is but thats what Ive seen from him.

and i cannot remember a "star" Su player who gets blown by off the dribble more often than JJ

if he can stop getting beat off the dribble and also learn to play better team D, then great...we'll find out soon enough bc red is going to play him heavy minutes
