Drexel Postgame Thoughts...

I do think things have changed. They didn’t throw up all over themselves from April through July this year as they did the year prior.

Red’s the guy that assembled last year’s team. It was a catastrophic failure of talent evaluation and NIL fundraising. I’m very glad this past offseason he acquired guys who want to play defense.
That’s like blaming the manager of the A’s for not getting the top free agents. It’s a monetary market now. That said, he had to have enough guys to field a team. They weren’t an ideal fit.
Evidently, SU is better funded now, and Red was able to get guys more in line with his vision.
Also, he made a big change at S&C, and that has seemingly paid dividends.

Autry didn’t do enough fundraising work. It’s been well documented. He didn’t want to do it, and he thought he had enough. He was wrong on both counts.

I give him credit for recognizing his mistakes and correcting them this past offseason.

I was at the game- small overall crowd but almost all Orange!

Kiyan was great in first half. Love how he can finish with both hands. I’m surprised how good he was creating his own shot.

Kingz is tough. Got to the hoop, rebounded and played great D. If shot starts to fall like advertised, I think our fans are going to love him.

George every solid game.

Only negative was rebounding for me. Freeman needs to get some defensive boards. I don’t like how he fades away on the block as well. I’ll stop complaining because awesome win.

Best team in a long time. Athletically superior to the lower and mid majors again

Well this is a new thing for everyone. And that is why a business manager who uses analytics and metrics is the way to go.

Was at the game. Impressed by how athletic this team is. At times we were a bit out hustled and we need to rebound better. Freeman didn't have a single rebound until well into the 2nd half...that can't happen. Nice Orange crowd. SU needs to get this time back to MSG in a neutral court game.

i think he gets mentally lost on defense...turning his head and not shfiting quickly enough...he just seems totall lost on the team defense aspect, always looking in the wrong direction at the wrong time...not sure what it is but thats what Ive seen from him.

and i cannot remember a "star" Su player who gets blown by off the dribble more often than JJ

if he can stop getting beat off the dribble and also learn to play better team D, then great...we'll find out soon enough bc red is going to play him heavy minutes

I'm not so sure JJ will see 30 minutes in a game again unless he's having a great game offensively. Anthony is too good to only play 8 or 10 minutes a game.

Co0aches grow and develop like players do. We were spoiled having JAB for so long. Many of the great ones from his era left, even guys like Bennett and the Nova coach left. The three senior coaches in the ACC all left, not just due to age but also due to the demands of NIL. I just think some of the veteran coaches knew where thongs were headed and did not want to play by the new rules. Basically everybody had to tun into some formof Caliperi or Pearl.

Some things after watching the replay

1- Drexel is well coached and it’s clear why they’ve have so many highly coveted transfers under their current coach. This includes being an aggressive team and good on the glass one of the best even as a mid major.

2- This team is earning their stripes and learning how to win and play as a team. Most importantly though for the first time under Red I see leaders emerging and pushing teammates. Donnie getting on the guys at the end of the first half was a really important moment as was the entire team responding and picking up their play.

3- The Kiyan vs JJ argument will persist but the fact is so many guys are putting in the work and effort that there is a good problem emerging up and down the roster especially at the guard spots.

4- This was a homer tv crew but one thing they got right was that Drexel was playing about as well as they possibly could and that wasn’t even enough to stay with SU playing ok but not great and then once the defense locked in it blew wide open. All this on a neutral court to boot small crowd or not.

5- Kingz is off a little but when those shots start dropping as we know they will it’s a bit scary to think the kind of runs these guys can put together. Especially given what he does outside of just being a shooter.

Some good points, and not to negate the comments on SU.

But come on.

Drexel is not a good team.

Who said they are a good team? Definitely am not trying to overrate them to be clear. They are, however, a well coached team is my point and the comments about them developing guys who have moved on to P4 programs is accurate. They are a step up from the first two games for that reason on its own.

This was their worst non conference loss since 18-19 and outside the NCAAT the worst neutral/home loss in terms of margin than anything I could find in the past 20 yrs.

We manhandled them as we should in the second half and did so away from the Dome and with still no JJ and even losing one of the key reserves for most of the game.
