Drexel Postgame Thoughts...

Donnie has a lot more dawg in him so far this season. People talk about the boards yesterday but was there really a moment where he was in position to grab the rebound and didn’t put in the effort? If there was I did not see it. I think our aggression contesting some of these looks has guys out of position to grab the board at times. And last year he averaged 8 boards a game as a freshman. Also he is averaging 3x the blocks and 2x the steals compared to his freshman year. Why does nobody mention that when talking about the boards?

I really like how he is not afraid to initiate contact driving to the hoop on offense. Way more aggressive in his 1v1 matchups. And his handle looks way better this year. He looks more skilled and less soft imo. Also stepping up as a leader. I have seen nothing but big improvement from Donnie.

Really have to credit Red and co to the offseason and start of the season. Could not have asked for a better situation at this point in terms of making the tourney.

About to get punched in the mouth and have to bring JJ back into the rotation. Lot of land mines right in front of us.

But that second half really was evidence of a tough team.

Love this team. Can’t believe Kiyan is this good off the rip. Loving the roster as a whole.

I’m very worried about the JJ thing with the schedule coming up. We navigate that and maybe grab a dub out in Vegas, we’ll be cooking with gas.

Ohhh. Good point. I didn't even think to relate this to the new strength and conditioning coach. Both the women and men always seemed winded last year and ran out of steam. This team could play all day and not get tired out.
Everything physical. Woof!!

Rob Harris and Alex Kline deserve a lot of credit for this teams transformation.

I'll once again mention the soon to be famous Harris sideline celebrations. The dude is a madman. His body language is hilarious. It's no wonder the kids are more intense than in the past.

So, who comes off the bench when JJ comes back cause Anthony is not getting benched.

Anthony is coming off the bench. It's been said that he's on the Two Year Plan. As long as he gets his 20 minutes a game, it will be fine. JJ is a senior. He's going to start. How long he plays is up to him. But he has to be much better than he's shown.

On the defensive boards, the work starts before the shot hits the rim. He needs to work harder to get position, and to box out. He thinks he can jump over people.

Also the fact that he only played 14 games last year, he’s gonna get better and better

7 of his 8 boards last season were defensive. I just don’t think it is a going to be a season long concern. And when you consider how improved and aggressive he looks in other areas it hardly feels worth mentioning. He clearly put in major work this off-season. The only game he looked concerning was the very first preseason game. Has been excellent since then. Soft is not a word I would use to describe any aspect of his game so far.

I think when Starling is back, he will start. Kiyan will be the 6th man and I imagine he will sub in for either Kingz or JJ, depending on which one is playing better. Kiyan will get his minutes. And should be in the game during crunch time.

I too have not been impressed with Kingz three point shooting but he has been doing other things to compensate.

Love both Sadiq and Kyle. Both have the size and athleticism we have sorely lacked for too long.

Donnie has oodles of talent but still needs to play more inside out and not hang out so much on the perimeter. Use the glass!

George is going to get better every game. He is the straw that stirs the drink.

Hope Betsey's ankle injury is minor and back to 100% for Houston.

For the record, I loathe Houston and would love to see Sampson eat it

Sadiq is very intense. He had to be calmed down by the ref at one point and later by Red. He revs very high. We're very fortunate to have such an athletic, deep team this year. Trying to hold back the enthusiasm a bit because of the last few years . But this team has incredible potential.

Freeman had at least 8 defensive rebounds in a game seven times last year. Three of them came against P4 teams, out of the eight games he played against those teams.

He gained a lot of additional mass since that time... I think his rebounding will be just fine. I was more concerned about Kyle coming into the season than Freeman.

Some nittiest of picks..

So I don’t like Kingz shot selection at this point.
Not nitty in the least. He was 1-5 from three and 2-3 in the lane. As soon as he started getting into the lane with that left hand more so in the second half, his productivity improved tremendously.

This feels like it might be a problem all year. Our best rebounders are attempting to block every shot and out of position for rebounds. It might be frustrating all year but the aggressiveness is what will make the defense good. Will be interesting to see how that plays out

The refs have spoken to him in every game. He’s an intense kid.

Good post. Red and staff have done a great job putting this team together. We've got a solid chance to play with most of our schedule.

I don’t even know who he is. I would love to notice that!

You bring Kiyan and Betsy in at the same time and that’s a lot of fire power. Kiyan might also come in for George or Kingz too. Red will have options. I think we all felt JJ will be more efficient if he played fewer minutes. That’s going to happen, which will also help him to improve his defensive concentration. Like Donnie said yesterday, our offense is still a work in progress. This offense will continue to improve when roles continue to be defined. We’re scoring over 80 points per game and we have lots of room for improvement.

I thought all but one were open looks though.

Yesterday, he made a mistake on the offensive end, and you could see he was angry. He completely dogged his man the next possession, I thought he was going to get a steal or a foul with the way he was slapping at the dribble... But instead the guy got spoooked and passed it away.
yup he had the airball baby hook and instead of pouting or lollygagging he sprinted back and D'd up something fierce, it was really great to see
