Duke Post Game

Exactly, people think we just need talent. Watch their defense last night. They play a switching style defense they all move together, they all battle, they all give effort, they all help, and they all know where they are supposed to be. That is coaching. Getting the best talent money can buy and rolling the ball out gets you Indiana. Getting talent with coaching gets you Duke and most SEC teams. Getting you no talent and terrible coaching gets you Syracuse.
It's culture as well as coaching as well as recruiting.

It's the Fran way too.

What culture do you want? Does everyone understand the expectations?

Recruiting the right players for that culture, which is going to mean finding kids who are coming from a similar culture. Also finding kids w attributes who match the culture. Gritty, high iq, whatever it is.

Then coaching to that culture, teaching kids the culture, & promoting kids who fit the culture & benching those who don't.

I saw Scheyer play in person when he was a sophomore in HS. He clearly was a Duke cultural fit way back then.

Reds recruited some guys who don't fit in any culture, IMO.

We will be back. Autry is obviously not gonna work but if we hire someone good, it'll recover.
Red's not going to our coach Long term unless we are all missing something

I was enormously impressed by Duke's relentless defense, and they way they moved as a team. They covered was out beyond the arc, but backed each other up. We need to learn how to defend desperately.

The very first Duke basket was a drive in layup as no one rotated to take on the ball. That just can't happen. At least foul the guy and make him earn it.

Cuffe certainly doesn’t lack self confidence in his own ability……as he was in full chuck mode last night in 12 minutes. 0-8 from the field including 0-4 from 3

duke's defense seamlessly switches up defenders . a good point guard reads the switches and finds the mismatch. we don't switch well and got no true point guard.

Duke is usually alot of Hype and smoke. Not this year. Their defense is legit and puts them in Natty conversation.

It's not all NIL related but with Duke I think it's more than people think this year. I won't defend Autry until he shows us something by the way but last night they're up 30 with 3 mins left clean up crew was 5 star guys.

Duke is just in blank check mode this year more than ever and Scheyer's seat was alot hotter than people know going into this year. Let's look at Duke the last few years since NIL started.

Last year with 10X the payroll and talent they were embarrassed multiple times by NC State, before then in 2022 when the hall of fame coaches left UNC beat them and made the Natty game against Kansas. Coach K's retirement game against UNC too. These are huge black eyes for them regardless of net ranks and AP rankings.

They have 2 Final 4's in the last 10 years, 3 in the last 15 years. For the talent and money they're spending that is just not a good return on investment.

It's not just hoops. Down the road in Chapel Hill they're hiring Belichicks and throwing a ton of money around. So now Duke is paying 4 million per year for what I think is a basic portal QB next year. We are paying probably 150K for Rickie Collins by the way.

We're not just living in a timeline where teams' are digging a little deeper in NIL with a mil or two here or there. They are 10X-20X or more where we are and doubling or quadrupling their whole NIL budget year to year to compete.

Scheyer is really good. That was as enjoyable a team to watch as I have seen in years. They defend tremendously. They recognize situations and execute out of those situations at an extremely efficient level. They are athletic and skilled, and play very hard.
If anyone was wondering why Maliq went there along with the cash...how about the way they value a big who can pass, defend, see the court and play the game with an IQ that would be rarified air for any SU team.

We stink and will continue to until Red is gone - he can't coach. The longer the AD allows this the more my opinion of him dwindles.
I like Scheyer as well. How would that game have gone if we flipped rosters? Duke has 5 great 3 point shooters, the #1 draft pick, size, length, athleticism and great PG play. Probably 6 NBA players. I get it on Red, but Red Aurbach would not have won that game. None of our guys would see the floor for Duke including JJ. Maliq would have been our best player and he is 7/8 man at Duke.

Yup. Some people get crazy saying that if we don’t turn it around NOW then we’ll suck forever. That’s now how it works.

Get a good coach who (a) knows how to coach, and (b) has a real plan for NIL and the portal, and we’ll be fine.

No one else plays in a 30K seat venue. This program has advantages that most schools can’t even hope to dream about.

Putting aside NIL for the moment, who on this roster has improved this year? That is one of the most damning questions for Red. There are plenty of guys who have regressed, for example Choppa and Bell, or stayed the same like JJ. But other than Donnie before he got hurt and maybe Taylor I would argue nobody has improved as the season has gone on.

Plain and simple. If Syracuse wants a successful Division 1 basketball program, they need to spend some money. I think we have a big chance for improvement next year with the players coming in.

Not enough. Even our highly ranked recruits woefully underperform the last few years. Developing players is a thing. It’s a skill /talent some coaches and programs have and some dont. Just throwing good money after bad won’t be enough
