E-Rob & the Defense

What about James Heard?

He had some big offers out of HS including Tenn, Ped St, TxA&M, Nebraska, etc.

Figured he'd be a rising performer @ LB.
Last year he was used more as a 3rd down coverage LB. He will have a role, but I think they need someone else to step up. He is talented.

So certainly some growing pains on defense last year. Part coaching (teaching like better angles and tackling) and play calling (3 man fronts). But we did see some adjustments. We lost some players on defense, key players that hurt. We are losing our 2 captains on defense and our secondary seemed thin. That said, you have Watson, Thomas (330 pound Dt transfer), Perry, Wilson and Hastings inside and all but Thomas in year 2 S&C. Jobity moves out to end and you have also Jaquez, Omopariola, King and a bunch of younger talent. At LB Sparrow, Heard, Goddard and some youth (so some issues there in that room to be figured out but we have some players) and then in the secondary Duce, Ibn, the Kerr brothers, Samuels, Grant. Some good talent in the mix. I am sure I missed a couple. I do think we will still hit portal for another LB or 2 if needed. That said i like allot of the younger talent. There are some big, strong and fast players on that defense.
To be honest that defense above is mid at the very best. I like David O. I think him and hopefully Watson take a step up but idk what we’re doing at LB, and the secondary is a question mark. Grant is boom or bust, Duce is serviceable, i’m not sold on Kerr as of yet and Samuels is a true freshman.

I think the offense has a chance of being really good again but would be unrealistic for expectations to come close to last year. As of now i’m really down on the defense in comparison to what was lost last year. Maybe playing a little faster and another year of bringing in pieces that match the 4-2-5 will help soften the blow but otherwise from a talent standpoint it should take a step back. Then throw in schedule strength YoY and i’m thinking 6 wins will be close to a miracle. I think we’ll be playing with house money this year.

Losses:
Diggs is a loss but we add a solid pass rushing end in David Reese who had 11 sacks the past two seasons. We really add both Jobity and Tank Wilson inside. Jobity recently did say he wanted to be a dominant inside DL but I wouldn't be surprised if he slid outside some. Losing one guy on the DL is not much . Others will improve, especially young dudes like Watson and Perry.

Wax is a loss but he was out a lot of the year when hurt and when he returned he didn't play at 100%.

Barron is a loss, some at LB and some at Safety. So is Cisco but not an enormous loss. Lewis, Bellamy and I guess a little of Barnes at CB as he got hurt in his 5th game were fairly solid but replaceable. We have some young talented athletic DB's. Some will step up. Also we gain back Marcus Washington, the 2024 Louisville transfer who was hurt.

Its our second year in the system. it will be improved. The Team as a whole will make a big jump in their second season.

Watson and Perry with a full year of experience are going to be very good.
They started to get there at the end of last year

Was at practice last Saturday. The defense looked better than it did last year at this time
Not facing McCord probably had something to do with it.

Good to hear. Hoping younger player development compensates for the loss of the defensive draft hopefuls.

Diggs was a huge get. Yes, McCord obviously was a big part of it. We had talent on D too.
Correct! Diggs and McCord were invaluable to this team last season. Without McCord throwing for the record books we are not close to what we accomplished.

An observation like that is now the definition of being negative.
No dude that is not an observation, that's someone who is typically in his responses glass half empty. He was responding to a guy who has connections, coaches and gets a view of the players directly. So when that connected person makes what is a likely informed comment, Franco made a off the cuff lazy assumption It's fine to bring up comments based on facts, tape, outcomes that are critical. At the same time...wait for it...it's ok to be positive. Positive doesn't mean homer...just means your being positive is all.

We've come a long way from grabbing OCs from McNeese State. It's nice to be ahead of the chains for once. Both Nixon and ERob are going to get poached at some point. Talented young coaches are going to want to come here.
In the case of ERob the defensive play call on 4th down vs. Stanford begs to differ.

It’s fluckin April. Holy crap.

An assumption is not an observation. Money had an observation, he was actually there.
I’ll gladly change my tune when I OBSERVE the defense play well against an actual opponent. Can’t take too much away from playing against your own guys. Remember the reports of Red’s players tearing it up in practice?

I want to be wrong. I pray that I’m wrong. But, man, you fellas must have forgotten just how maddeningly passive this D was last year.

Too passive. We need to be more aggressive and disruptive. We are never going to have 5 star talent on defense. We need to attack the other team to win.
Yes, and I don’t see him changing his colors. It’s in his bones. I am really really scared to see what happens without McCord diverting attention away from that side of the ball.

Wow just wow. Stop lecturing people and let people be. It wasn't even close to being a controversial comment. Stop being triggered.

I like others hope the D will be more aggressive this season. I wonder if the passivity was based on a concern for the secondary being beat over the top and inserting new players in a front 4.
I am encouraged that the coaches are acknowledging that tackling was poor and making it a focus to improve.
Also, Watson and Perry will be older and presumably stronger. They get back Tank and Jobity and add Thomas. The piece that we need is a dominant pass rusher. Maybe it’s King or Jaquez or someone else steps up.

Triggered?
