E-Rob & the Defense

Elijah Robinson, who began the season as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, will now serve as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

worst defense in D1 and you're still "co-defensive coordinator" . doesn't sound so much like a demotion as a re-branding. so who now calls the defense ? he's still "CO - in charge ?

well that and his entire career.
he is gonna be paid 10-15 million from SU at a pretty young age. Not worried about his career. tons of time to go back recruit, get a new plan and get a head job maybe a wrung lower if need be in 3-5 yrs.

By listing him as "co-", it likely allows him to keep his salary.

If he sticks around, he'll be helpful to the new DC wrt the existing players.
I'm sure that he'll be looking for a position at another school for this coming season or 2027.

For all the whining about losing the starting QB, I don't see how that had anything to do with how awful and useless the defense was. Teams ran wild through the DL and were GONE to the end zone. It was pathetic.

That is incompetent coaching flat out. I don't see Don Brown as having saved anything either. You can look at the all time worst defenses in SU FB history - the final Schwartzwalder years, Jim Goodfellow, GRob, Chuck Bullough, Brian Ward - none were as bad as what we just saw. I mean really BAD.

I seriously question whether Fran Brown knows how to hire a competent coaching staff, and to lead it.

Other than the first half of the ND game <ugh>...

If Angeli was still around, the offense would've done better, hence the defense would've spent less time on the field. 3-and-outs on the offense made the defense spend much more time on the field.

Hoping for a more McCord type of offense next year + a better defense than this year. 🤞

Fran's loyalty appears to blind him to reality. imagine keeping on your chauffeur even tho he's constantly either lost and late ? well i guess E-rob will still be sitting up in the front seat . whether he's actually driving or riding shotgun just giving out more bad directions remains to be seen.

Also, opposing offenses could both be more patient (what's the rush, Syracuse is not scoring until we let our 2nd team run a prevent defense) and take more risks (even if we turn the ball over, Syracuse is not ever going to outscore us) because there was little concern of our offense scoring. You cannot put your defense in that type of situation.

Clemson was rattled because we were putting points up on their defense. Klubnik was trying to make big plays, rather than the easy plays. Overthrowing open receivers, making poor reads. We put NO other team's offense in a position to even be nervous about having to score.

Sure, several teams/offenses would have risen to the occasion and outscored our merely "competent" offense (20-25 points)... but a handful of other teams may have choked under pressure. Our historically bad offense did not help our defense.

This is why you didn't hire your best friend in the first place
he should have hired a guy with demonstrated success as a DC and probably a guy with prior HC experience as well. Solid DC probably not the best HC. A Shafer type or Muschamp type would have been just fine. Probably would have won 12 games last year with the right DC hire

I don't mind the idea of hiring a friend in the role he's done well.

But giving your friend his first promotion in your first year together? When you're doing a job that's two levels above anything you've ever done? Turns out that was a stretch.

In fairness, why hire a coordinator with HC experience if that guy can be the interim coach when they can you? See Phil Montgomery at Virginia Tech.

Would you prefer they strip ERob naked and have him walk through the streets GoT style?

Losers mentality. If it gets that bad then who cares you have failed anyway. I mean Nunzio was the interim for Dino, they will put anyone who can fog a mirror in that role for a few weeks. See LSU, UF, PSU this year.

If you get fired mid season at Syracuse you have earned it!

I thought there was a broad consensus on this board that ER was an excellent hire and would probably be a HC in a few years.

Since Muschamp isn’t available, the next best option for DC is Scott Shafer. He's already proved himself here. Remember 2010 when his defense ranked top‑20 nationally and carried us to a bowl win? That was Shafer’s hard nosed unit. And at MTSU, his defenses led the nation in turnovers and consistently ranked near the top in sacks and tackles for loss.

Syracuse needs toughness again. Shafe brings the fire, the track record and the identity. Bring him home and let’s get back to playing defense the way it should be: Hard nosed and relentless.
