E-Rob & the Defense

I’ll gladly change my tune when I OBSERVE the defense play well against an actual opponent. Can’t take too much away from playing against your own guys. Remember the reports of Red’s players tearing it up in practice?

I want to be wrong. I pray that I’m wrong. But, man, you fellas must have forgotten just how maddeningly passive this D was last year.
I remember trevor Cooney being one of the best shooters Gmac has ever seen.

Not to derail the thread, but I'm not down on the defense... It was year one of a system change that requires more bodies up front and we lost two starters and a couple depth players on an already thin unit for the entire season because we had been recruiting for a system with 3 linemen previously. Not to mention probably our best player for like six weeks.
I agree. They also came up really big when we needed it in a lot of games. 4th and 9 was bad, but no worse than the pick 6 earlier that game. Really need to do something about the chunk plays though.

For context Brian Ward loved the 4-2-5. Yes, not the same exact defense that we have now but close. That didn’t turn out well and fans were pulling their hair out because we didn’t have the players to run that system. Maybe you can say we have better talent now but it’s unproven. We have good DT depth for this system but that’s about it as far as proven commodities. Maybe some young talent at DB but inexperienced. Duce should be a solid depth piece not a starter. Need a really solid pass rusher. Who is that guy? Need a stud LB who can cover ground. Don’t have one. The LB we targeted in the portal went elsewhere.

It would be so nice to build momentum from last season and have everyone in town saying SUFB is back for real. But I fear we’re taking a big step back this season. Casuals won’t care that we’re playing a very difficult schedule.

Wow just wow. Stop lecturing people and let people be. It wasn't even close to being a controversial comment. Stop being triggered.
As you lecture me in response lol The person coming across triggered is you in this exchange but all good...you do you. Glad you like to keep it "real". Remember do not be positive about anything...at all. Just raw criticism and pessimism all the time no matter any information provided. Nothing can be good or it's automatic "orange glasses and being a homer". Moving on...

The faulty logic of the 'so did you' defense. I will never boil this board down to such simplistic and child like viewpoint of you're too positive or negative. Nothing to do with that. There are many sides and points that make up the truth. Will never say someone's too positive or negative or shouldn't make the point, but I will address posts on their value, accuracy, or validity. I know this will be too nuanced for you.

Go back and read the initial post by Money and lazy reply by Franco.

True. I think most people want to hear the truth but it’s natural for fans to not want to hear negative news.
Fans have earned the right to be skeptical when history provides plenty of reasons to be skeptical. Show me improvement on the field where it matters not in practice playing against teammates.

What are you talking about? None of your comments makes sense to what I said. I didn’t say anything about fan skepticism.

This is a wildly ignorant post, especially considering the talent we had when Ward was the DC compared to the talent we have now.

Outside of DT what positions are proven upgrades to what Ward had to work with? Humor me.

IMO last year the biggest issue with the DL was we didn't have enough bodies. That seems to be fixed this year. For LB we were also lacking bodies. This year we are lacking both bodies and talent. I think this group is scary, a major concern. CB last year we were very young. This year we are still young. The Ss last year IMO were bad. They made a ton of mistakes, even our best player in the group. So the question is were those mistakes more a lack of talent or lack of knowing the role/system? We lost our best S and I am not high on the capabilities of the two returning players. I think this area is a concern.

In today's game the role of the D is really to occasionally get in the way of the O. Don't allow quick scores. Don't allow long drives. Hold the O to FGs instead of TDs. And when the opportunity presents, get off the field. A school like SU will be lucky to have a good D given the current CFB environment. And if it happens it will likely be a SR led D. That being said I don't have confidence in ERob with a good D, and IMO this D lacks a lot.
