Elijah Moore Entering the Transfer Portal

He “might” be ready next year, but as a school you have to decide if he’s worth the investment.

If Red was told it's NCAA Tournament or else, he can't take a gamble on someone who "might" be ready.

I would expect to see a lot of experienced veterans from the portal next year, to supplement the frosh.

Freshman Year Stats per 40

Why can’t these guys be patient and stick around the develop? What went wrong here?

Don't you think this is what could be wrong here? Players especially young players don't feel like they are getting developed. When was the last time Syracuse had a player drafted? How many top 100 recruits have we had and not one of them actually drafted on draft night for a decade? That is the problem

Similiar to an uncomfortable number of recent players for SU who were well regarded as recruits but didn’t look capable of playing high major ball until transferring out and spending time at low majors before being OK at best in their 5th year.
This is the problem in this era. Teams can't develop anybody. Maybe Pitino is right, only recruit form the portal let other teams develop guys. Unless you can add a five star the Freshmen don't make sense. Too hard to get kids to buy into waiting for their turn. Oh well, "Players Only Love You when They're playing".

Eh, look, a huge thing that gets overlooked on the Pitino thing is the guy is really old. Who knows how many years he has left coaching. He ain't got time to recruit high schoolers.

Pitino is the same age Jim Boeheim was when we made the NIT with Andrew White and John Gillon so yeah.

I don’t understand. Why was the writing on the wall with Choppa? Red was his recruiter and he had a decent season here before getting injured the last few games. Why can’t these guys be patient and stick around the develop? What went wrong here?
Believe Griff was his recruiter.

I'm not making the case that overall Choppa played well. He struggled. Nobody is making the case that Choppa played well the whole year.

I'm making the case that guaranteeing we got what's likely the worst college basketball of his career by immediately turning an early enrollee off of the program is not a recipe for success.

There are multiple interrelated problems to address. One is talent and performance. Moore didn't help much on that front this past season. Point taken.

But another is program continuity and building something that guys believe they're a part of. We're not working from a position of strength on that front.
This is the same point I was making in the Cuffe thread.

This is why I'm losing interest in college hoops, and caring less and less about SU hoops. I'm tired of seeing basically an entirely different team each year. I miss watching players develop and teams gel together over time.
I’m also turned off by College hoops due to the ever changing roster. I’m now watching more NBA, and living in Southern California, rooting for the Lakers. Cole Swider plays for their development team and i hope the Lakers bring him up.

There's so much commentary about why and what if. The answer to 95% of these posts is #1 Money and #2 Playing Time. #3 is some other variable that maybe is 5% of the reason. The SEC and B1G figured this out 5-10 years ago and yet here we are debating.

The takes in this thread from some people are just protecting themselves from their previous takes it’s kind of sad. My opinion? They both should be gone unless JJ is willing to be a 6 man type guy. They both, as it stands today, add nothing of a winning product to this team. Ball dominant iso two guards are for losing.we have a top 30, alums son coming in the at the same position, and player in JJ while still very flawed, has shown and proven a lot more than the bascially nothing Moore has shown. I don’t care one single bit about his “great game against Tennessee” we’ve seen the same thing before. One good game doesn’t make you a good player. Remember this game? How did Jalen Carey’s career end up? Moore could end up having a good career and I hope he does he’s a good kid and works extremely hard but it’s really not crazy or extreme or anything for this to happen. It’s a two way street and from our side of the street Our staff is in win now mode and they need to acquire and establish as much talent as possible. We have a higher ranked recruit at the position coming in and want to fill the cuppoard with already developed players., a I’d assume Moore would’ve been welcomed back as a reserve, 2nd 2g, 3g off the bench but he wasn’t going to get some guarnteee role or spot that’s The reality of the situation. His side of the street is simple, playing time and being used how he wants/thinks he could be.

He is right. Until kids can sign and be held to multiple year agreements frosh are only good for depth. Maybe a kid like Donnie is worth it but not most.

Moore seems like the 2024/25 version of Jalen Carey...one excellent game followed by rapidly diminishing scoring and even worse defense ending in transferring out. I suspect Moore will be OK somewhere else but never be a "star" and will end up moving around a couple more times.

Hahah look at my long post two post above yours I mentioned the same thing

For me, the only 2 that I want back off this roster is Donnie and Petar.
Unless JJ is willing to accept a secondary role as a Senior, he needs to move on .
In the portal get a good point guard and center. Build the team around them, Donnie and the freshman.
Get a lot of minutes for the freshman.

I would love to bring in 3-4 portal players who have at least 2 years of eligibility left.

Here’s my take on Moore. I saw a player that struggled with confidence all year long. Not unusual for freshmen. It’s harder for fans to be patient with players when they’re getting paid.

But Moore had about the same playing time as Demetris Nichols as a frosh. And shot the ball at a higher Pct.

It’s an interesting perspective. I think he’s going to be a good player for someone eventually. But in this new world, you almost want other programs to develop players, and you snag them once they can be solid contributors to a rotation.

He “might” be ready next year, but as a school you have to decide if he’s worth the investment.
And Red only has next year. He has to go all in on kids who will be ready...if he can identify them.

We were told we have money for next year, so that’s not it. Moore got plenty of opportunity to play this year, including starting several games, so that’s not it either.

As others have mentioned, it’s coaching (or lack thereof) and the opportunity to be developed into a pro player. They know they aren’t getting that here next year.

Any portal guy we want is going to cost a lot. I hope we have a war chest.

Basically Moore was what jalil bethea was at miami. But I am reading “no way we take bethea! He was a bust this year!” and “damn! We lost moore!”. It’s a nonsense for me. I would have liked to watch a sophomore season of moore with us, but times are changed. These kids have opportunities to find immediately a new home without redshirting. I don’t like but I can understand why they transfer, most of all as freshmen.

Lots of talk about how this staff can’t develop talent. And maybe that’s true. But it seems to me the much bigger issue is that this staff is terrible at evaluating talent to begin with.

Red started his tenure here brining in three guys he had prior recruiting relationships with (Starling, Cuffe, Westry) and McLeod. All four of these guys have profound flaws in their games and only Starling has contributed.

Then last summer we brought in Freeman, Moore, Lampkin, Davis, Carlos, Taylor and Petar.

Again, all deeply flawed players. Only Lampkin and Freeman were meaningful contributors in my eyes.

11 acquisitions in two years and I’d say just three were anything more than JAGs (just another guy).

Only Petar if he is willing to be a bench guy as that is his likely ceiling. And then there was one.

Keep Donnie for sure
JJ for sure as long as he agrees to OUR number not his
