Encouraged by devito

Stat line doesn’t tell the story today. It interestingly on paper he had a good game. For this who watched though it was feast or famine. When a receiver is open Tommy isn’t missing. But decision making needs to improve. Good thing is he has some serious talent.

Never said it would. DeVito, Tom Brady, Dan Marino, Chip... who cares. Throwing the ball away on fourth down is a ridiculous play in any football game.

Chip doesn’t fit that group.

He never throws balls away. No matter the down.

Count them

I watched and thats not what happened. He only truly threw it away once. The other times you are upset there was nowhere to throw it.

Plus, you ignore the fact that its something easily corrected, which means you are being emotional.

Running straight up the middle every time we run doesn't help either, Devito's decision making right now is not good and he has not shown an ability to make plays, inexperience is a factor but some of the 4th down throws are puzzling and shouldn't take a 5th year senior to throw a jump ball up in the end zone to a receiver with the dback with his back turned, worst thing that could have happened was a incomplete pass which is what happened anyways, maybe you get a PI, the int early on where the receiver was out of bounds and not even looking back and the throw is directly to the DB was also puzzling, I don't know what he is seeing but he's not seeing the game as he should.
The running game better get better with more variety in the types of runs or we are in trouble offensively unless the OL all of a sudden gets much better, Devito has shown no ability to move the ball with his feet and make plays and opposing defenses know that.

Of course the one time he tried to make a throw it was intercepted so there is that but nowhere to go but up

why can’t we go over the middle? Is there some law we’d be breaking?

Not in the Babers playbook. We haven’t thrown to the middle of the field since day 1. He wants to pull you forward to throw the ball deep. Throwing to the middle of the field disrupts that. Tunnel vision system.

Good thing we’re at least playing super fast from play to play....

The td to triston was over the middle.

Just because it happens once doesn’t mean it’s a regular thing. Throwing, or having those plays/routes that are used regularly is the problem. A few instances a game doesn’t mean “they use the middle of The field”

So go pontificate about it in your own thread about that one play. Stop hijacking this one.
Didn’t realize this was the “rah rah” thread. You should rename it

The thing that encourages me is after the fumble and interception and general struggle DeVito could have very, very easily gone in the tank, but he rallied and made plays after that.

I thought the way the game was going to go at that point that the defense would shore up and the offense would go in a shell, but the offense showed some signs of life and the defense kept blowing itself up.

It's probably actually better that way, as ugly as it looks and crappy as it feels now. The defense has runway to get right.

I’d agree if not for the 4th down throwaways.

Hard to compare to Dungey who gave everything to gain an inch on the field.

It's because our receivers can't get off the ball and are too small. If N. Johnson sits on Sean Riley's shoulders, that's what the Liberty Receiver looks like normal.

Stats never tell the whole story because there are many other factors. But Tommy’s QB rating today was very good. 160+. Eric for the season was in the 130’s.

Tommy will be fine. Love his throwing ability, so many other factors are in play for a QB. We are taking a step back but love his potential moving forward. Remember he’s only a sophomore

TD will have his ups and downs and there were some good things and bad. The way the D played it took the offensive game plan out the window but you have to have their backs and the O didn't.

I expected better OL play and WR and I didn't see it. It looked like the ND game to me emotion wise...flat as heck.

UM was not just better in every facet today - we didn't even belong on the same field. Their coaching staff obviously knew they could punish our DL on the ground and hit wide open TE's all day. It was like our LB's weren't even there.

On paper, DeVito had a better game than Jackson (330/296, both with 3 TD's and 1 pick, 71% completion for DeVito to 55% for Jackson). But we couldn't stop them on the ground, and on third/fourth downs DeVito had no one open. These were two teams at totally different levels.

Overall, some positives on offense but tough loss for the program to recover from - and the defensive meltdown is hard to process. At this point every single ACC game on the schedule is in doubt.
