a few weeks ago we were 43 ranked overall class

since then we have seen the departures of: Parsons (who was never offered?), Smallwood (flamed out), Owens (Home), Brantley (poor visit) and have another who may stay home (Whitehurst)

other than Morgan (50/50) and JPO (33%) it will be a disappointing end to this class

Hey we picked up Jay Bromley after signing day

Those rankings do not reflect our JUCO signets who are currently NR, as well as Whigham who is NR. These three are essentially factored in as zeros right now. This will change and I expect SU to crack top 50 or stay around 50 when things are said and done.

Rankings change as top recruits start committing at the end... not surprising. Also, losing Brantley actually HELPED the ranking on some sites because he was only 2 star. That right there tells you the absurdity of class rankings.

How do you know that Brantley had a poor visit? It's disappointing that he flipped, but just because he picked Missouri doesn't mean that he had a poor visit to Syracuse.

Also, Whigham decided to stay... Manley decided to stay... if Morgan, Whitehurst, and JPO end up at SU then I think it was a strong close to the class.

funny though... with all the talk about our recruits being so lackluster, we have plenty of interest from other schools in them. Funny how that's worked out. I guess they suck until they go to another school. Then they are huge losses :)

Frankly, of those you cited, I am most disappointed with missing on Brantley. Parsons stated that SU rescinded his offer. So where is the failure on SU's part? Owens is going to a lesser school and may have been encouraged by SU to move on. Smallwood?...can't do anything about that. Whitehurst is still undecided. The sky is not falling and until signing day is done, we don't know how good the class is.

So far, I like the class a lot (and so do a lot of other schools who are trying to convince these kids to go to their schools). Even so, none have signed yet ...but I like the size, speed and athleticism. It could turn out the be the best class in over a decade.

But we wouldn't change our position relative to the other big east teams if we are 50.

Hopefully we find a way to finish strong.

Harold Brantley told John Garcia on TOS he didn't have a very good visit.

Parsons is going to prep most likely ...grades. From what it sounds like, he had a "get your grades up and we will offer" offer...

And don't forget about Miles Hillard...

so where would that put SU among ACC classes? Hopefully not at the bottom.

Personally, I don't understand all the emphasis on where we are ranked by some recruiting service. Like the NFL draft, the true measure is will be how the recruits pan out and whether they contribute down the road.

Until we start winning consistently, we are never going to pull in highly rated classes. Others with better memories can correct me, but the most highly-rated recruiting classes I can ever recall from the 1990s were in the 30s.

I like this class. Losing Brantly is a blow but Manley is a great get. I thought that Owens had very good potential but he wasnt going to play other than specials this year. Morris was a huge get by the staff in a position of need. Lets see what signing day surprises we have in store but all in all a solid effort by the staff. Best class to date.

well for the past ten years we have been ranked somewhere between 50 - 100 for our classes, and we have seen the results on the field

Our best years were with a Dwight Freeney led team in '03 and a senior laden team that had a ton of heart and leadership in '10. Other than that we have produced poor results on gameday.

I would like to see us finishing in these rankings between 3rd and fifth in the BE standings and 5th - 7th according to ACC standings. That would mean our class rankings would be in the lower 40's. I want to see top 25 but I know that will not happen often if at all, however it is not unreasonable to ask and expect classes ranked between 35 and 45. That would signal overall improved depth and quality of talent across the board. Right now we are doing ok in some regards and really lagging in others.

We were at 43 a few weeks ago and have seen some departures and some additions not yet rated (and to be honest wont be and will get slapped with the old ** treatment), thus dragging the overall class perception and ranking down further. Outside of Wayne Morgan, and slightest chance of JPO / Hilliard our team ranking will probably finish about 60 after everything is said and done. No different than the past ten years.

By the way, ranking teams like this is a flipping joke. Like I said in another post, losing Brantley actually increases our rating.

This kind of troubles me. I get the sense that the staff is just too hard ass on the kids, cutting them no slack at all. College is supposed to be fun, not joining the Marines, despite the commitment required to be a Division 1 athlete.

Jones, Garrick, Manley and the kicker don't count?

Other than possibly Manley (who was trying to find anyone to give him an official afterward), who were we competing against for those guys?

Freeney's senior year was 2001.

That was also a senior-laden team with a lot of heart.

So you're basing that on one kid not really enjoying his visit? Read quotes from other visitors that "it felt like everyone was a family" and "it was the craziest environment I've seen for a basketball game". One kid and you think Marrone is putting them through boot camp on a visit...

No, I'm basing it on him losing the team after beating WVU this year and then going on a 5 game losing streak. I'm also basing it on the number of kids who have left the program, and the number of key players that seem to get suspended every season that Doug has been here so far.

You would also hope that when they assign kids to host recruits, that they would be picking hosts who are happy to be on the team, not people who complain to recruits about being here. That's specifically the part that bothers me.

Recruiting trips are supposed to be a great time - I was recruited when I was a HS senior for cross country and track, and I loved taking visits. If you are a kid and go to a school and DON'T have a good time, that is a problem. How do you sell your program with hosts complaining about the program?

So, you're basing your opinion on your own assumption that HCDM "lost" the team. Other than the 1st year (which really needs to be discounted), how many players have left the program and how does that compare with how many players leave other programs? You act like no other schools have kids leave from year to year. How many other programs have kids get suspended for disciplinary reasons? Answer, a lot. I think we see SU under a microscope and fail to see a lot of the same issues elsewhere, even when they exist.

Just to make another point, there were 3 kids (out of about 40) on my freshman floor that left after one year too. Does that mean that SU is a bad place to go to college?

Brantley loves the coaches. He said that he couldn't see himself playing with the group of players he met during his visit for four years.

Considering how this season ended, were you honestly expecting a huge improvement this year?
For as long as I can recall, we lose a decommit almost every year (as do most teams - many lose several), and there are almost always a couple of recruits who don't qualify. In fact, under previous coaching staffs, most of our most highly rated NQs, who skewed our rankings upwards, never even made it here (Irdris Price, Andrey Baskin, LaVar Lobdell, Romale Tucker, DeAndre Preaster, Dale Peterman). I'm hoping guys like Broyld and Davis signify a change in this trend.
