Euro 2020

One thing I wish Soccer coverage in North America would get away from is the over analysis on favourites in the tournament. I get it, they are the better teams but let’s say a Wales/Finland/Whatever team did what England did today they get written off for the tournament. I do get England has talent and they can turn it around and Scotland are a fair side but I feel like at least in Canada the coverage is surrounded on England/Germany/France (justifiably) and 2/3 teams there aren’t threatening to me at least.

I’m not sure our analysts know Belgium is the top team in the world right now.
Germany might be out after tomorrow. They were not very impressive against France and even though they lost on an own goal France totally dominated. Everybody has heard of Germany (and England) so they get favorites type coverage. I‘d bet most casual fans couldn’t name more than a player or 2 playing for Belgium.

I think COVID has wreaked havoc with squads around the World. Many players had the virus and missed training during recovery. US and most of the European countries are on the way back and with high vaccination rates should be at full strength by the time WC rolls in December 2022. Not so sure about the teams from Africa and Central and South America though. Hopefully by then the rest of the world can catch up with the vaccines and the virus is totally under control.

I think this is true. I also think that the talent is spread out more as well. You don't have as many super teams and a number of countries are going through growing pains with a transition to a new generation ( Spain and Germany for example).

The eastern European sides are also a bit weaker as they transition too. It's looking like the Czech team is pressing ahead while the rest, Croatia included, work through stars aging out.

It will be interesting to see if the African and Asian teams take steps forward, CoVid notwithstanding.

Either way, with a load of talented players playing regular minutes in elite Euro leagues, the USMNT is in a great position to start planting their flag in the world power conversation.

Not to nitpick here but Germany had 60/40 possession and outshot France (albeit 1-1 chances on frame; yikes). Can’t call that a dominant performance by Les Blues, but no use arguing semantics. Just my opinion.

Germany still very much alive but they have their work cut out for them, for sure. Drop 3 points tomorrow and forget about it. Would be stunned to have a Joachim Low side eliminated after 2 matches.

This has been a really entertaining game so far.

Yeah. Feel so bad for Hungary. They deserved better vs Portugal and get beat on a long ball from Lloris. They deserve to snag a point at least.

I had Hungary finishing ahead of Germany. We will see in the last match day!

Would love to see that. I've been really impressed with Szalai, and Sallai the last two games.

It's so difficult to create chances when you are in a defensive shape for nearly the whole 90 minutes. Not surprising it was Fiola who scored given everything but still it's those two up top who are having to defend as well who gave Hungary a reprieve putting pressure on the French just enough throughout.

France having difficulty scoring goals. Hungary pinched off the the middle and forced France to attack from the wings. They had their chances but couldn’t capitalize. A little surprised to see all that French talent not able to create better chances. Kudos to Hungary for keeping them at bay.

Hungary did a great job working back to prevent the French attack from gaining steam as well. Honestly I was not quite as surprised as the French team struggled to score when they can't use their pace to get behind the defense. This was also a game where I thought that Pogba and Kante didn't work playing together.

Feel like this Portugal team is similar to France in that they defend well and have the ability to slice teams apart with a quick counter attack.

Should be a fun game.

Portugal doing just that. Acted asleep for 13 minutes and boom.

Really hoping for an open 3-2 or 4-3 kind of match in this one. Had enough of the 1-0, 1-1 matches. That said finishing hasn't been great this tourney so..

At 2-1 and it has the feeling there are more goals to be had in this.

Back line for Portugal has questions

Carvalho with so many bad first touches, Pepe getting roasted non stop and thinking he should be a striker and just overall awful defending. They are lucky not to be down by 3 or 4

Portugal was definitely lucky and Hungary unlucky in that first match- especially watching this. That backline is a joke right now.

Portugal got money into throwing this game? That last goal zero press on the ball and they just sat and watched Germany score that.

Should be better, but they are getting carved up and don’t know what to do.
