Was just going to post this in the other thread! I'll be putting this thread on "watch"
Already had to do an hour or so research in the last few weeks to figure out what "porpoising" is.

Pandemonium in Quali. Bottas in the Alfa over both Mercs so far in Q1! KMag taking the HAAS P4 in Q2 right now! Looking like Ferrari nailed the power unit this year... This gunna be a fun season!

Man that was fun. Threw 10 bucks on Leclerc at +500 while at the casino last weekend. Wishing it was a bit more at this point.

I found this wonderful site fully of vintage F1 and sports car races that ahve been remastered in a way to make them look hyper-real, using techniques I've seen used on footage from the early days of photography but this stuff is in color and from the 50s, 60's and 70's.

Here's a sample: the 1955 le Mans race, where the tragic accident occurred. It looks like a telecast of something happening now. Others have looked like modern vintage car races - except they are the real thing form 60+ years ago.

Here is the original footage before the remastering for comparison:

Innerestin’ race today.

This may be the first year that I pull for Ferrari.

It was fun. So excited to have another competitive season after a decade plus of Red Bull then Mercedes just dominating.

Thought it was really good, nice and welcome change. Amazing how likeable HAAS as a team has become without Maze-spin and Daddy. Merc customer teams looking like they're going to be asking for their money back on that boat anchor motor they baught, feel bad for Seb (when back) and Danny Ric. Charles and Carlos are easy guys to root for. New regs also look like they work and we're gunna get more on track battles.

Lot of encouraging stuff to unpack after that race.

I’m most interested to see how quickly Mercedes figures out their dolphin problem. And if they can do I quickly enough to challenge for a championship. If not, I’ll take anyone other than Max. It was very gratifying to see what happened to RB, just because Horner is such a preening schmuck. Karma in Race No. 1.

I feel for Mazepin, though. But, guess if you have the seat because of the finances involved in a familial/business association with Putin, that becomes a consequence —but, in general, it’s uncool to punish athletes.

Amazing stuff. They had >55 cars in that race. No real guardrails. People just standing on the track. Primitive. Unfortunate that it took fatalities to serve as the reactionary impetus for the evolution toward safety.

And those starts are whacky.

Haha welllll I find just about the whole cast of Merc insufferable so we're never going to agree there and I'm deff taking some joy in them looking like a midfield team for once. We'll see what kind of pace they find and upgrades they bring throughout the season. I have a feeling Ferraris going to run away with it this year unless RB can fix their reliability issues and try to challenge.

I initially felt bad for Mazepin and even Dani Kvyat when it all went down, but once I saw their statements all that went away. Kvyats intial statement was soft and selfish. The guy lives in Monaco, doesn't even live in Russia so he could have been a little more condeming, others living in Russia have made more powerful statements. Mazepin when asked about it seemed pretty tone deaf to the temperature of the room, but his oligarch Daddy is a Putin buddy and was even called to the Kremlin during the first week of the invasion so I expected nothing less.

I felt bad for Mazepin for about 30 seconds until I thought through the whole process of his existence in F1. If he had worked his way up to F1 and was an adequate driver I'd have continued to feel bad but he was an embarrassment to the sport. So in the end my conclusion was...daddy's money/power bought it and daddy's money/power got it taken away.

Same here- Initially felt bad for Mazepin until I watched season 4 and learned a bit about how he got his seat, and "got to know him".

I think I'm all in on HAAS as "my team". I had gone back and forth for the last year, but having KM back, the excitement of seeing what Mick can do, seeing what HAAS can do in the new era of deregulation, I like it. Ladytroop likes Guenther and once I make her watch the Schumacher doc I think she'll have a soft spot for Mick.

I wish Alex Albon got a better shake. I know I'm brand new to the sport, but I thought he did well enough in his short time with Red Bull to get another year, or at least get a better ride than Williams. I think if Alpha Tauri went into last season with Gasely and Albon, we'd be Alpha Tauri fans for sure.

Being a sports fan my whole life, I'm no stranger to players coming and going from my team. Besides Eli's departure (which almost made me quit on the giants and NFL in general) I've always taken it in stride. There's 22 players, losing 1 or 2 a season isn't that big of a deal. Seems different in F1. How do you guys handle your allegiances? Do you follow your driver from team to team? Stick to one team and deal with whatever driver they put in the seat? I never had this issue with nascar, I always had a favorite driver (Ward Burton, whats upppp) never cared about what team they drove for.

I'm honestly not sure how the majority of people do it. I've only been watching for 10-12 years and only had 1 friend to talk about it with before the Netflix show.

I initially rooted for Force India because they were an underdog punching above their weight. Then they dropped my favorite driver(Sutil) around the same time this 17 year old wunderkind named Max was starting for Toro Rosso so I just hopped on that bandwagon early and have stayed there. He's not really likeable as a person since I think his dad turned him into an emotional/social robot a la Todd Marinovich but he has been a monster behind the wheel from day 1. Think I probably like Gasly the most just for being able to persevere after getting even worse treatment than Albon did by Red Bull. Now he just crushes his teammates non-stop in the Alpha.

Made my wife go to Austin a few times and she decided to root for Ferrari and then stayed with Vettel when he moved onto Aston Martin last year. Think everyone that watches the show and is from WNY now loves Danny Ric because he has the best personality and is a Bills fan.

Neither of us like Danny Ricardo or his personality. The "lick my balls" comments turned me off as well. (Am i getting old?!) Had he stuck it out at Renault I might have felt a little different, idk.

How did you like Austin? I'm thinking about trying to make the trip this year, some friends have a camp spot saved for us. Was the wife engaged for the whole weekend events? I'm assuming there's a ton of non racing activities throughout the weekend.
Does she watch the races on tv with you?

I don't think it's been announced officially yet, but F1 in Vegas is going to be absolutely off the hook. I'm working on building connections in the racing scene down here to see if I can't get the hook up haha

Alright- I think everyone's aware that I'm a bit of a drunken degenerate. Also, very new to the sport.
I get that Leclerc and Verstappen are strong favorites, but it's auto racing- literally anything can happen. I find it crazy that the odds gap between the top two and the rest of the field is so large.

Let's say I bet $10 on everyone from Sainz to Alonso. $70 total. Maybe even throw Gasley in there. If Leclerc and Verstappen don't end up winning, one of those 7 or 8 almost certainly will. Right? Anyone besides Sainz and I'm money ahead. Am I missing something? lol

I didn't see the odds for the first race, but if Hamilton is going to be around +1000. Russel around +2500, I might bet them every week! lol I know they have issues right now, but I'm sure they'll turn it around. If Hamilton wins within the first 9 races, I'd be money ahead (if the odds stay the way they are now)

Do I need to be talked off this ledge?!

The big difference in F1 and Nascar is that sticking it out can be very detrimental to your career. In Nascar a good driver is going to win races at some point in the season and figure out a way to get to the playoffs. In F1 if you are on a bad team, you are dead and a year or more of your career is just gone without even having a chance to be competitive.

I love Austin as a city and the track. I did hear that it was completely different last year and that the crowd changed dramatically and I saw that ticket prices have certainly raised in price significantly. The Miami race is extremely gross, it looks like they are making for the influencer crowd and ticket prices are damn near super bowl level. I hate it. A LOT. The cool thing at Austin is there are huge concerts on Fri and Sat night. Think last year they had 21 pilots one night and Billy Joel the other. Think one year was Britney Spears and Bruno Mars, another was Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder. Not that I particularly like any of those acts besides maybe Timberlake and Joel, they are still pretty significant names.

Wife will usually pop in and out during races on TV. Won't usually sit and watch from start to finish but will ask questions and usually the end.

Kind of funny you brought this up. I'm heading over to the near me in like 2 hours to go cash in my Leclerc ticket from this week and toss a little on Sainz.

I'd say the thing to get used to is that at least half of the races are likely to be won by Ferrari and Red Bull. Can even rule out Perez for the most part, so I'd guess that of the 23 races that probably 14 are going to be won by Max, Leclerc and Sainz. Perez may run into 1 or 2 to get it to 16. That leaves around maybe 1/3 of the races to be won by anyone else. Sainz beat Leclerc last year so they are on a pretty even level though Charles is thought of higher and Sainz has struggled a little bit with the new car.

So once you get below Russell you are basically just throwing money away on a hail mary that may happen 2 or 3 times a year where something crazy happens at turn 1 and a couple cars get taken out or there is weather or a safety car happens at an odd time and makes things go haywire. It will definitely happen at least once this season and I hope it happens a bunch of times but the odds kind of reflect it appropriately. Sainz is the only one that I see as a value. Maybe Perez too but not as much.

That makes sense on Ricardo.

I was worried about what you describe with Austin and Miami. Selfishly I hope the hype wears off a bit over the next couple years. I wonder if we'd be better off swinging up to Montreal.

How big of a deal is deregulation? Do you think it will be enough to make all 20 teams competitive? Or are the bottom teams still priced out, just not as much? Am I wrong for assuming that all 20 teams being competitive would be better for the sport?

I've been meaning to get to Mexico City for about 5 years. Had a place booked once and friend backed out. One of if not my favorite city and it's always right around Dia de Los Muertos too which would be cool to experience.

"lick my balls"
If you don't like that there's a certain interview with KMag and Nico Hulkenberg from a little ways back you wont care for either lol
