FBI arrests Assistant Basketball Coaches in Corruption Scheme

you know . . . i'm not a lawyer, but i could conceivably be in a jury pool. and i have to say, from my lay perspective, everything connected with marty blazer reeks of entrapment. doesn't change my normative judgement of what chuck person did, and doesn't change the fact that his player(s) have to be ineligible . . . but based on what i have read, if his lawyer made an entrapment defense, i would not vote to convict him on criminal charges. i don't know about the other cases, but this one bothers me
I am a lawyer.

It's not entrapment.

This is why lawyers are terrified of juries.

This guy is trying to equate two agents vs, a publicly traded where an executive was using bribery to win over major shoe contracts with Universities.

Plus these coaches can be charged with Bribery Graft as they are state employees for some of these Universities.
They're employees of an entity which receives Federal money (the universities receive research and Pell Grant money) and offered and/or received bribes so they're getting zapped by the FBI. State charges could be pending as well.

Speaking of the Big 10 - so odd that none of their programs have been linked to this and with Urban Meyer leading the charge against corruption - they are definitely trying to take the moral high ground here.
IIRC, Meeshigan is their only Adidas school and they only recently switched. I would imagine the charges against Nike and their schools are forthcoming and that could bring the B1G into the headlines.

An interesting story from August in which coaches anonymously voted on who were the cleanest coaches. Of the top eight coaches, four came from the B1G:

1. John Beilein - Michigan
T3. Greg Gard - Wisconsin
T6. Chris Holtmann - Ohio State

The ACC had two on the list. Not surprisingly, Pitino was absent:

2. Mike Brey - Notre Dame
T3. Tony Bennett - Virginia

you should be. in the end, the power is ours.
Not really. Although criminal judges are elected in NY, Defendants can choose whether they're tried by a judge or jury. And a judge can set aside a jury verdict if it's against the weight of the evidence.

The guy makes $600k a year and he does this stupid crap for $22k+! Even if he made $300k more a year from this crap, you risk your status as a 1%er and your integrity!? Even if you were paid the $600K specifically to facilitate these deals, why would you expose yourself to criminal charges by taking brides? I just don't get the greed urge for persons who are so well off.
People tend to spend at/near the limit of what they earn. If you make 600k, it's not as if you have 500k more disposable income than a person making 100k. Your house, cars, vacations, watches, clothes, and wives all cost more. 'Extra' money is money to everyone. Trump didn't stop nickel and diming ma and pa shops when he became a billionaire. Seems like it's only Silicon Valley culture that believes in living well beneath your means.

Per Deadspin article, Nasir Little was recruit Miami was trying to secure and the other program was Arizona.

All good with our guy

Insightful article here from Zags:
SMH...
Consider: NCAA guidelines for improper benefits violations of at least $700 recommend an athlete sit out at least 30 percent of the season and repay the value to charity as conditions for reinstatement.

“Those rules are out of the window of this case,” Jackson said, “because no one ever envisioned a $100,000 benefit.”

When was this rule written,in the great depression?

Plus the author penned this from the street point of view as these kids know full well what the rules are and if a family member gets a fistful of bennies.

NCAA out of touch? I'm shocked.
