Final Kenpom prior to tournament.

Colorado State is ranked much lower on the KenPom than the RPI. They were like a 7 seed in the RPI.
In the KenPom, they are an NIT team (which happens to be what they are).

I have heard it speculated, that at times, the committee uses a system like KenPom / Sag to try to more fairly assess teams with such varied SOS. Perhaps it was something they did this year.

It's almost like they went down the KP list to close out their at large field. They went by the more standard metrics to seed teams.

This is precisely what they did.

They aren't allowed to consider rating systems that factor in margin of victory, because they believe it will lead to teams running up the score.

Not necessarily true or untrue.

Such scoring systems are not the primary metrics to consider, but there is mixed info out there as to what secondary info can be brought / discussed with the committee. I have often believed they are used something like KP rather than RPI to seed the 14-16 teams.
