Fire Autry

ok. And say what? This feels like the selection show where we have to sit through 6 rounds of commercials forJeremy to spill the good stuff.

I don't know how much clearer I can make it. Syracuse didn't want its HOF coach with numerous BOT and Donor backers in an all out war when he had to be fired vs "retiring".

I'm not sure why we're re-hashing all the previous 10 years of shoulda-woulda-coulda Boeheim stuff, we ALL know it should have been different...but honestly, with the current landscape of college basketball & the re-shuffling of entire team rosters (Syracuse brought back TWO players from last year), it has no impact on the game TONIGHT.

The thing that frustrates me is this, with a weaker roster & less skilled players last year, it was still CLEAR that Syracuse under Autry is system-less. There's no clear identity, especially on offense. The way the season started I was hopeful & excited, but even then we could see that if Syracuse isn't getting out & running off of turnovers, the team would struggle immensely.

It's absolutely asinine that Syracuse Men's basketball is the worst free throw shooting team in Div. 1. The Orange do not have the margin to be that... it continues to bite us hard.

Here's how I see the reality, after 2+ years... we're 100% capped with Autry as the coach. There's not gonna be some "aha" coaching breakthrough, no matter how talented the players. Even if they love playing for him, the final posession tonight was genuinely embarrassing (even though Kiyan was fouled!).

Can you envision Red Autry coaching Syracuse to a National Championship? No? Even just in your wildest dreams? Yeah, me either. If that's the case, why is he currently the head coach of one of the top 10 programs in College Basketball history? Why even hold on to him until the end of the season? It's unbelievable.

what scares me is these same BOT members are still there. JB is still on campus. What gives us confidence that a true and proper national search will be conducted this time?

There were 3 things that went completely wrong - JB staying too long, Hop not being the coach and then Oats not becoming the coach because JB said so. JB should have never had that much say in things when it came to what was next. He screwed Hopkins. He screwed the fans the last however long so he could coach his sons. He screwed the fact that Oats wanted to come here and was pissed that Buffalo ran them out of the gym that one year. Screwed us in recruiting by literally not even trying. The guy refused to text recruits. Let that sink in! Refused to get an iPhone to communicate with recruits because he literally didn’t want to!! Theres so much stuff behind the scenes that went on that I will never share, but that is one small thing that literally plummeted the whole program. Red is overwhelmed as being the coach. Hes not perfect, he may not even be good, but the players love him and he’s great in his position within the university and the community and those that know him can say that truthfully. However, you are judged by wins and losses and you can’t lose this type of game. He wants to win too badly because he knows what it means, but it can’t get to this point. Even if you barely win so be it. You’re missing your best player, but shouldn’t lose to Hofstra ever.

But the spiral this program has been on can be blamed to one person and we know who that is. I hope some how this season turns around, but I wonder long term.. when red won 20 games with the misfits he had in year one, I truly thought he had it all figured out. I feel for him, I feel for us, but man oh man this has so many layers to it
I could write a book about the things I have seen over the last 10 years and the things you write about the issues the program had before Autry became the HC are all true - and there were a few of us that were yelling about stuff on here since 2014-16. You can call it premature, but things changed drastically since Ennis’ halfcourt shot at Pitt.

The truth of the matter is, Adrian Autry should NEVER have been the head coach at Syracuse. He is a great guy I am sure - but his resume was not strong enough to get a sniff of a job like Syracuse if he was anywhere else.

People say “Boeheim would have went scorched earth” and I would argue and ask, what difference would it have made? We are about as low as you can be as a program at this point…and yes, they’ll win some games this year I’m sure but where are we going? So if Boeheim goes “scorched earth”, would we have failed to make the tournament every year since and been eating PB&J’s on charter buses to North Carolina?

Not so sure we have the most resources
Really? Rapoli is pumping St Johns with resources, I get that.

Regardless Red does not belong on a P4 sideline as the head coach. Great recruiter. I think there’s some very quality talent on the roster this year. He’s ill-prepared, has no offense, and continues to talk about “level 5 energy” and the “juicing station.” When you lose to Hofstra at home and do that you come across as a moron

The biggest problem (aside from Mr. "ya know?" Red) is Naithan George. By the way, I play a drinking game with my gf and friends where we drink every time Red says "ya know?" in post game interviews. We're all trashed in minutes. Try it it's fun 😁! Anyway, in my opinion George is a monumental disappointment and hasn't provided the offense with any sort of boost we thought we'd be getting over Carlos. PG is arguably the most important position- sets up the offense and is supposed to make everybody better. He doesn't do that. When he failed to get up a game-winning shot against Houston I knew it was going to be another long year at that position. Last night he amazingly scores zero points against freaking Hofstra at home while shooting 0/4 (0/3). He did get 6 assists but sorry man we need 10 points from our PG on top of that. He is the reason we lost. No point guard, no good team. It simply boils down to that in my opinion.

In his last 5 games, aside from St Joe's where he shot 4/6, his shooting percentage has been nothing short of horrific. Hofstra 0/4 (0%), Tennessee 1/7 (14%), Iowa State 1/5 (20%), Kansas 1/4 (25%), Houston 4/13 (31%). That's 7/33 (21%) shooting from our point guard since the competition has ramped up. This is where the Autry abject stupidity comes into play. You're tied with Houston and you call this dude's number shooting 4/13, over JJ who was shooting 5/8 that night? I don't understand some of the decisions this dude makes. It's a shame because he really struck gold with Kyle. What a waste if the talent and athletic bunch on this roster don't get a crack at it in March.

Let's see what happens over these next few games though, and how the team responds. I know everyone is over Red, but we haven't hit ACC play yet, so the opportunity to turn it around is still there. With Donnie hopefully set to return by the Clemson game it can be turned around, but we will need George to average 10 and 6 assists for us to go 14-6 or better in conference play (with at least 2 more quad 1 wins), which is what I think we'll need to make the tourney. Keep the chins up and let's hope for the best. The talent is there.

Trust me, I get the point. I’m just saying that family bonds over teams aren’t entirely dependent on being elite. That’s why we have generations of Bills fans.
I cannot agree w this enough.

I still talk SU Football w my fraternity brothers weekly and we have been irrelevant straight line wise since the moment McNabb left

Excuses are like u know what.

It was a bad hire. Wildhack should consider canning him now. What’s the worst that will happen?
Maybe piss of the donors, I would get a few losses into the ACC when it’s clear we are eliminated and then do it. But honestly I have a hard time arguing against it

I know it’s just me but I’d love to get gmac back or even Greg Paulus. We may not be able to pay a big name coach but there are plenty of coaches that are great that don’t cost
4 million dollars
Are you serious? Niagara coached by Paulus couldn’t beat LeMoyne. They are maybe the worse team in America. He will be fired at the end if the year.

We both grew up in the same area, so we certainly know that one can become a super fan of a mediocre-to-lousy team if your family and region are sports-obsessed and support that affinity (see: Patriots, Red Sox).

Now, if a kid or a family are casual fans, then the team being good is much more necessary.

Paulus’s teams are terrible. He has had zero success.
The decision to go the mid-major head coaching route with hopes of reaching P5 head coach is super risky and can tank a coaching career or delay it by many years. Sometimes it's just better to remain on as an assistant like Hop and Autry did and get your shot that way. Paulus should have declined Niagara and waited for a better school or stayed on as an assistant at GW. We'll see how it plays out for GMac. We see what it did for Autry and he blew his shot because he's low IQ.

I’ll never understand how JB was not only allowed to rack up a second probation without consequences, but then was also allowed to lord over the program so he could have family time for years.
It’s simple. 40 years on the job and you develop powerful allies with the BOT. The buck stops with the BOT, who put their “access” above what’s best for the university. And that’s why I’m very nervous JB will still have influence on the picking of the new coach.

Tbh I’m torn on this. I don’t doubt that a lot of this is true and agree to an extent and think JB def nailed it in towards the end, however I lean towards that red is now going on year 3 to turn this around and hasn’t. In the NIL era that should be enough. We have no semblance of an offense out there and look clueless, however he has cleaned up the defensive end and the players clearly love playing for him as well as an improved level of talent. But you just can’t ignore the results and the fact that we struggle to score as well as improving players.
One thousand percent. JB ego ruined the program. Red supporters still using it as an excuse is crap. JB isn't the reason we can't run an offense or break a press. Red is on the hook and needs to be removed.

Where are they going? I mean we need a coach we have talent. I’m fine with seeing if one of
The assistants can actually coach end of game.

Not making a quick sub after the 5 sec violation is a man who isn’t smart to coach period

I’m curious about the relationships (or lack thereof) of the former players vs the staff/school. We’re seeing those transfers mocking and taunting us. Has that ever happened before? What kind of dysfunction is so pervasive now, vs in the past? Is it just that we suck, and there’s opportunity to gloat? I’m harkening back to BJ Johnson, and his pops stayed with us as a contributor. It was all very civil and lovely, even if there were some resentments.

We certainly know what DC thinks about the coaches. I believe he called them clowns.

“What time is the Patriots game?” (Joke in 1989)

“When can you make it?”

I always thought being a fan through a trough makes it more enjoyable if the worm turns

I also am a believer in shaking things up. If this was the Red Sox or Yankees, red would be fired and Morgan Magic would begin (or Bob lemon magic 1978 style)

I’m not going to judge anyone’s parenting here. At the same time, a team doesn’t need to be a perennial final 4 contender to make it a family activity.

It’s a bummer that SU has been mediocre for a decade. It’s was avoidable, and tough decisions needed to be made in the wake of our second probation.

But if you needed the team to be great to use it as a bond, let me suggest that the kids were never going to be into it anyway.

Easy to say when SU was good for the previous 30 years.

We’re currently being made fun of by Jaquan Carlos and Chance Westry on twitter fwiw. This is Syracuse basketball under Red and what our program has come to.
so what? Carlos was the worst point guard in the last 60 years of Syracuse basketball. Have fun playing in Moldova. Westry never got off the bench, seems like it was own doing for various personal and health reasons. Have fun playing in Uzbekistan.
