Fair enough. But at the very least it sends a message that you're in charge and will not, even at the risk of losing a game, tolerate lazy bs play from your team
Call me old school, but we've seemed to get away from HCs who lose their isht on a regular basis. The winners like Kirby, Hurley, etc., they don't hesitate to stake their claim as the Alpha in the program. No one's asking for indiscriminate buffoonery, but danmit, how about some good old-fashioned chewing out every once on a while?
I hoped to see Red send a message this year, early and often, that certain things were not gonna be tolerated on the court. One or 2 lazy passes...sit your azz down. No hustling on defense, sit your azz down. Bad shot outside of the offense, sit your azz down!
That being said, I've come to the conclusion that Red just doesn't have that in him. JMHO
Fair enough.

Given the thread title and the posters most vocal here.

How many wins in ACC play would it take to get him back?

It seems to be the bridge has been burned but would 15-3 get you to givd him another year? 14-4?
General consensus is that Red has to make the NCAAT at a minimum to keep his job. Others have stated that he also needs to win a NCAAT game to keep his job.

In order to make the NCAAT, or at least be on the bubble, we have to 9-3 the rest of the way, excluding any ACCT run.

Looking at our remaining schedule, it’s very unlikely we will be able to go 9-3. I think we’ll struggle to go 6-6.

So the conclusion that every reasonable fan as reached is Red will be fired at the end of the year and we need to start looking at new HC options.

Yes, I get that. But how is JB holding the program hostage now? Did he make the decision to not make a change after last year? Or to make a change now?
Okay, so... apparently you don't get it because I explained that. Maybe direct these additional questions at the poster you were responding to?

Probably in name only. To give him a place and ease being retired.
Which is fine with Red having had taken the helm. Honestly once we go outside "the family " he should be quietly let go. Syracuse did him a solid which is great but once Red is gone, I would move JB out as well so the future coach does not run into any "stuff".

He needs a tourney run, and I'm not talking about the ACCT.

Talk about how many ACC wins is meaningless. It's about WHO the wins and losses are against. Winning at Duke will be a nice feather in his cap en route to the unemployment line if he keeps losing to the BCs of the world. Even to casual fans, the team seems undisciplined and poorly coached. Some players have significantly regressed after performing well elsewhere.

Syracuse will forever doom itself to irrelevance if they settle for "meh" because Red is an alumnus. Even in the current age of NIL, the stature of a program cannot just be bought... but it can be destroyed. The university needs to continue setting high standards for its flagship program while it's still in a good position to do so.

Much easier to lose stature than get it back (amirite SU football?!)

Yea this was what I expected to hear mostly so appreciate the post.

A long ACCT run or an 8-9 or even a 6-7 seed tourney seed with an early departure doesn’t seem to do too much either to appease the anger.

There’s just so much bad blood and straight up anger.

On first glance, it would make sense for Nait the not-so-great and Darling Donnie to have a prolonged seat on the far end of the bench. The problem is that doing so would mean sitting your point guard and the biggest offensive weapon you have. I could just hear the posters now: "Red sat Nait and Donnie! He's nuts, incompetent, a fool."
You lost me at the word “prolonged”. I don’t think anyone is saying park them on the bench for a prolonged period of time. Yes, that would be dumb.

But he could pull them for a minute especially after multiple unforced errors and try to light a fire under their butt which would hopefully help them lock in. It’s called for sometimes. It’s not every game. Good coaches know when to do that.

Also I think his timing/awareness for when to get on the referees is lacking. I laughed earlier this year because when he finally lit into a ref and was given a tech, it was the dumbest timing. We had just gone up like 9-10 points and were clicking and the tech was a momentum killer. Fortunately, it was a cupcake team so it didn’t matter.

Substitution patterns are formulaic and not based on the flow of the game.

I could go on and on. Different issues, same theme. Overall, Red just lacks that instinct and awareness of how to lead a team as head coach IMO.

He actually controls the SU checkbook and won’t allow anyone to grab a check for the buyout

Huh? You mean the donors? If so, that's nuts. If so, we need to get the new Chancellor chosen and installed ASAP. Someone who won't put up with this nonsense. KS is ready to leave for Ann Arbor.

I knew I should have used the font…..
You mean the font that's only on the pay side? But you're not the only one who has implied this. Someone else did earlier today and I didn't get what he was saying and he just gave up on me. I'm now inquiring of my Syracuse sources to see if anyone knows anything about this. I have a few good ones; the best one I won't be able to reach until tomorrow at the earliest.

So I'll start a new rumor that one of my Syracuse friends just said to me in jest. If JB truly is holding the program hostage, maybe his compromise will be to replace Red with Gerry who is the one he wanted all along. Ha! Wouldn't that be something. [Duck for the incoming fire.]

Completely believable. JB did everything he could to ruin the program his last 5-10 years. Continuing that with hiring a coach less qualified than our current one makes total sense.

I don't agree with the last part. Maybe less qualified 3 years ago but I think overall today he's a better coach. He was extremely candid in his post game TV interview after their game today. Even though they won by 8, he was pissed about how poorly his team played in the last 10 minutes of the game and didn't mind saying so. SOOOO different that another head coach we all know. None of this "our offense is great." And he doesn't do line changes. And plays his best players 30 to 35 minutes a game.

His squad got run by UVM. You really think he’s better than Red?

Right now I do. But that's a low bar. But I don't think Red is much of coach. I'm not sure he really knows what he's doing. You either are or you're not. He's not. I saw that last year and stopped watching games early. And I've been following SU sports for at least 70 years. Until last year I hadn't missed a basketball game on TV for decades. But lacrosse is my favorite.
