Fire Autry

Yes and no. I think coaches need to be firm but you need to continue to explain why. I hated coaches who yelled at me for no reason. You can tell me I suck but take me aside for a longer convo. Need a bit of both.
I’m not talking about that…fans pay a lot of money to follow teams, players get paid, they don’t play well and deserve to be booed. I’m not talking about bringing back Bob Knight

I don’t think Syracuse has fickle fans. We had good numbers for a while in football and great numbers in basketball when we were no longer competitive programs. Years of getting beat down and no faith in the coaches and school leadership will kill most fan bases.
Absolutely. UK is a top 20 program this season and their fans are calling for Pope to be fired. Syracuse fans are relatively calm and reserved because there were some minor boos as the program completes its eleventh season of mediocrity.

l think Brent Axe's column this morning on Syracuse.com is unnecessarily harsh and unkind. He leads with quotes from the movie "Hoosiers" and almost says that Adrian Autry is a dead man walking. Did I want AA to be the coach? No. Did I think he should have been given a third year? No. But as I think Kiyan says in the interview is a priior post on here, he is still a human being, and a Syracuse alum. No need to make it worse than we already know it is. And I think Brent somewhat crudely comes close to the line if not crosses it. And as many of us on here suspect, he probably has read every post in this thread. I'll repeat this one statement he makes in his column this morning:

"Autry is already being referred to in the past tense by a segment of the fan base as the chance to play meaningful games in March is fading into the distance."

Actually, I don't recall any post on here refer to him in the past tense. Although many now think it's inevitable (we hope).
I haven't read the article and probably won't. Right now, the team has lost three games in a row. Two of the games we were favored and one we were 1.5 point underdog. So, basically three games we could have or should have won.

I have three questions.

1) When was the last time in the ESPN era has Syracuse lost three conference games in a row.

2) How many times in the ESPN era has Syracuse lost three conference games in a row.

3) We have eleven conference games left. How many of those games will Syracuse be the favorite. I'm guessing either none or very few.

These are unchartered waters for the players, the coaches, the administrators and the fans. Cuse lost three in a row in Vegas, but the team showed a pulse, except for the last 20 minutes, but the fans understood the competition. Also, saw with their own eyes how they fought back vs Houston. These last three games were a lot different than Vegas.

The team needs a pulse on the road vs. NC State. The team needs a pulse at home next Saturday vs. Notre Dame.

Some fans thought we were going to wipe Miami's butt. Instead, we never even brought the toilet paper.

What's the past tense of Autry?

Autried?

Should we refer to Red as "Mauve" from now on?

And then there's Mauve...

Didn't JB lose 4 in a row in 2022-23?

Do you have a mental block about the terrible season last year? They did this exact thing (3 straight losses in conf) on 2 separate occasions.

I never understood the don’t fire rational

He’s terrible and he’s a lazy coach. It shows some degree of accountability to the program and the community that we care.

People care too much about the optics of his feelings.
FWIW, I don't think he's lazy. I think he works hard. But he's a bad coach and terrible at running a program.

I don't see a need to besmirch the guy's character on his way out the door.

“I just blocked that noise out because these guys have never played at this level and don’t know what we go through every day and how hard we work,” George said. “And just for them to come out here and boo, that’s, you know, that’s very disrespectful.”

Why should we be respectful of garbage play, giving up late in the game and constant hero ball?
If I sucked at my job the way George has sucked at his job I'd get fired.

These are pro athletes. Deal with the boos, buttercup.

Idk I think the booing and toxic environment has something to do with that Autry needed the extra year with better talent to play his philosophy. Well now they do have it and fans see it’s not good enough.

Yeah. To be clear I'm not a fan of booing.

But it's a lot easier for the people who have been with the program for less than a year to ask us to give Red another chance than it is for the people who watched two and half years of this to give him one. We already know where this path goes.

Ah gotcha. Fair enough.

I totally agree. He's a bad coach. Some of us saw it and knew it at the first game LAST year (Lemoyne I think). But no need to denigrate him as a person. He is trying. He just doesn't have it as a head coach. We can still respect him for taking the job and doing the best he can. If I were at the last home game this year I'd even applaud him for trying his best.

He needs to be let go now. If not literally now, then in the next week.

The team ain't making the tourney, obviously, and the situation has become incredibly toxic.

In the now quaint "SU needs to be 12-6/11-7" thread practically everyone agreed they had to go 6-1, 5-2 at worst, to start the ACC slate. Needless to say, 3-4 means it's all over.

There will be no "meaningful basketball" in March. Let the pressure out of the room and announce that Autry's been let go. Have one of his incompetent staff finish out the season -- it hardly matters who, they all stink. Let the players and parents make plans for next season.

Just give everyone a break, basically. Most of all, us.

I was with you until the last sentence. I'm not cheering for mere effort at this level. He had years to prepare for this job and he blew it big time. I will never get past how impossibly poorly he managed fundraising, NIL and roster construction last year.

He's got enough money to live out the rest of his days without ever needing to work again. If he wants he can be an assistant somewhere to keep busy.

I agree with you. However, I still question if JW will be moving on to a new coach at the end of this season. I know what he said about the meaningful games in March, but I am not 100% convinced. I do think we are ready for a new coach, but only time will tell.

I don't mean that I'd in any way cheer him. I've been calling for him to be replaced since the Georgetown game last year when I stopped watching. But at the end I would politely applaud him as an acknowledgement that he's part of our family and he did his best. He just didn't and doesn't have it.

Fans booing is the same as calling customer service for a faulty product. Anyone saying it’s mean just lives a sheltered bubble wrapped life.

The deadline for opting out of the automatic season ticket renewal program is Jan 28.

Wildhack will have his message in a few days.

Be 100% convinced. There’s 0% chance Autry is coaching at SU next season. Less than zero.

Yea he’s cooked.

I honestly don’t care what they do with him over the next few weeks.

All that matters now is we get in front of the game with the next coach and staff.

Coaching salaries have nothing to do with NIL it’s all gonna come from the school so Wildhack and the decisionmakers better be calling up the board and telling them to have a legit salary package ready to go.
