Fire Autry

It’s not lore.

I don’t recall which off-season it was, but JB advocated for Gerry to be his successor, and received feedback that it wasn’t going to be Gerry.

He told Gerry something to the effect of “I can’t do anything about it, I’ve lost the board.” Meaning the board was no longer going to let him influence the decision- which frankly pissed JB off.

I believe Gerry advocated for himself up until the very end and I know he was VERY mad he didn’t get the job.

The offseason leading up to Red’s first season was rocky between Red & Gerry before eventually smoothing out.
This is interesting insight. I felt it wasnt clear cut who should be next. Some people assumed Gerry, which I thought was odd being Autry was more senior and it plays to my thoughts at the time, that neither had the resume and nor were ready based on the program decline and they should have just went outside. Hop was a no brainer, program was rolling, JB had moved on from Bernie Fine, it made for as close to a smooth transition as a program could imagine having, it just never happened.

I was curious how Gerry felt about the transition.

Prior comments on this site (I don't recall which thread) indicate that Gerry did not take it well.

The big east started w the opening of the carrier dome.

We were regional and become national w those 2 moments in time. It’s the identity that carried us through the 80s-90s-00s

Once we removed one part of that stool it fell apart identity wise. Sure it’s not the same but it wasn’t the same in 2010 either.

Players like to play regionally regardless of what we like to think. Parents care too.

The program suffered as a result. Not saying it can reverse but we pretend it doesn’t matter we don’t play at msg or playing providence/georgetown/uconn anymore

Marketing wise we are a fish out of water in the ACC.

You can not mention "those 2 moments in time" in the same sentence without mentioning the advent of ESPN! It can be argued that that had the most significant bearing on what transformed Syracuse University basketball into the stratosphere over anything else. As it was them that showcased/broadcasted Orange hoops in such a way, for not only the prospective national recruits which followed, but for the entire world to see as well.

Apologies you are 100% right

I went to Syracuse because ESPN showed up in my house and showed the dome and big east hoops. Chicken meet egg

I think times are different now. My internet was big Monday, the library, Lindy’s and SI.
