Welcome to National Cereal Day!

Strange that the invention of breakfast cereal was founded on the fact that the American diet of the mid 1800's was a poor one packed with protein, booze and caffeine. Or maybe it’s not so strange. After all, cereal was considered a remedy – a sort of 19th-century health or wonder food for the ailing masses.

So if you’re raising a milk-sopped spoonful of oats or bran or wheat today, give a little nod to
National Cereal Day, which honors this classic morning meal and midnight snack on March 7.

ACC tournament in Brooklyn returns conference to its New York City roots (PS)

The ACC will hold its conference tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this week. The move might seem strange for the Tobacco Road-centric league, but it's actually a return to the ACC's roots. In 1952, one year before the ACC was founded, University of North Carolina officials hired Frank McGuire as the school's basketball coach. McGuire, a New York City native, had been the coach at St. John's. Upon taking the job at North Carolina, McGuire used his New York City connections to recruit top players. McGuire's recruiting pipeline became known as The Underground Railroad. McGuire's Tar Heels won the 1957 NCAA championship with a starting five that featured four players from New York City and one from New Jersey. Those Tar Heels are featured in this photo taken at Duffy Square during the 1957 NCAA tournament. From left to right they are: Bob Cunningham (New York), Lennie Rosenbluth (Bronx), Tom Kearns (Bergenfield, N.J.), Jon Quigg (Brooklyn), Pete Brennan (Brooklyn) and McGuire.

Below is a look at each ACC school and its New York city connections.

Miami Hurricanes Opens with Syracuse in ACC Tournament (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

After dropping their final two games of the regular season, the Miami Hurricanes fell to ninth in the ACC Standings and will play Syracuse in the opening game of the second round in the ACC Tournament.

The Orange won the only meeting this season 70-55 in January at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse seized control of the game with a 14-5 run over the last 8:06 of the first half and never trailed again.

Syracuse’s top two scorers, Andrew White and Tyler Lydon did most of the damage. They combined for 42 points on 14-26 from the floor, 6-11 beyond the arc, 18 rebounds and four blocks.

Syracuse shot 56.8 percent as a team from the floor and made eight of their 19 three-point attempts. They were also 12-14 from the free throw line to the Hurricanes 2-10.

Miami Freshman reserve guard DJ Vasiljevic has one of his best games of the season against the Orange. He scored 18 points on 6-12 from three-point range.

Almost exclusively a three-point threat early in the season, Vasiljevic got a chance to show he can do more when Junior point guard Ja’Quan Newton was suspened late in the season. He was the only Hurricane in double figures against the Orange.

After struggling in the 11 games after the Hurricanes lost at Syracuse, Vasiljevic has played well in the last six contests. He is averaging 7.6 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, and shooting 34.4 percent beyond the arc.

Katie Kolinski thrives as Syracuse’s first woman graduate assistant (DO; Schwedelson)

There are days Katie Kolinski walks into the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center and can’t fathom she works there.

She grew up a 15-minute drive from Syracuse University watching generational talents such as Eric Devendorf, whom she now shares an office with. She drove to New York City for the Big East tournament and watched Gerry McNamara, whom she now shares a staff with. She attended games in the Carrier Dome observing Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, whom she now shares a bench with.

But not once in Boeheim’s 40 years as Syracuse’s head coach did he have a woman graduate assistant. Kolinski is the first.

“Every day, you know you’re going to come in and you’re going to learn something,” Kolinski said. “That’s the biggest thing for me. … If I’m not prepared then I might not be able to get a coaching job. I want to make sure I’m as prepared as possible.”

After attending West Genesee (New York) High School, Kolinski joined SU as a manager for all four years. She became the Orange’s first woman head manager. Upon graduating last spring, Kolinski told Boeheim about her desire to stay as a graduate assistant.

When she was younger, Kolinski looked up to former Tennessee women’s head coach Pat Summitt. She enjoyed her fiery manner on the sideline and appreciated how she maximized her players’ talent. Now she admires Nancy Lieberman, who’s become a mentor to her, and Becky Hammon. Both are assistant coaches in the NBA — Lieberman for the Sacramento Kings and Hammon for the San Antonio Spurs — and the first two assistants in NBA history.

ACC Tournament Is The Best Time To Make A Trip To Brooklyn (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

If you haven’t seen the Syracuse basketball team yet this season, now is the perfect time to commit. The ticket prices were officially released.

While as you can see in the graphic below, they aren’t the most expensive ticket prices on the block. Keep your eyes on the SEC below which prices were driven up by the Kentucky Wildcats fan base.

Here is the analysis report done by our friends over at TickPick:

Just over $200 for a trip to the Barclay’s Center is quite the bargain all things considered. Especially when you consider that’s at the top of the heap from this season’s averages.

Here are the average ticket price sales from a report on Syracuse.com when the season started. Premium games (Duke and Georgetown) are priced from $50 to $200. Tier II games (Pittsburgh, Florida State, Virginia, Georgia Tech) are priced from $45 to $150.

While every other tier has a $75 ceiling and below. Again to reiterate, these prices listed in the graphic above are for the full tournament, all sessions.

We also know who the Syracuse basketball team will square off with. A rematch of SU’s contest against the Miami Hurricanes.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus is Ready to Battle in Brooklyn (itlh.com; Weisleder)

The Syracuse basketball team is ready for the ACC tournament and their star freshman Tyus Battle is ready to take SU to the promise land.

The Syracuse basketball squad got a much needed victory on Saturday over Georgia Tech on Senior day. Freshman guard Tyus Battle was one of the reasons why.

The New Jersey product scored 13 of Syracuse’s 38 first half points. Battle finished the game with 22, and hit some remarkable contested jumpers all afternoon.

There was no doubt that Battle had the talent he displayed when he arrived this summer, but his development has been remarkable.

Battle has only scored 18 or more points five times this year, and three of them have come in his
last three games.

Although Battle has struggled at many points of the season, his 17 points against Notre Dame, 23 against Virginia, 18 against Duke, 20 against Louisville, and now 22 against Georgia Tech have proved that he can shine on the biggest stage.

On Saturday afternoon, Tyus Battle shot 6-of-11 from the field, hit four of his seven attempts from behind the arc, and finished 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. That my friends, is efficiency.

When Syracuse made their Final Four run last season, Malachi Richardson peaked at the right time. Tyus Battle is well on his way to replacing what Richardson left when he declared for the NBA draft last spring.

Shaughnessy's opening delayed, but St. Patrick's Parade party goes on at Marriott Syracuse Downtown (PS; Pucci)

St. Patrick's Parade celebrations at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown will be in full force this weekend, even without the hotel's Irish pub.

Shaughnessy's Irish Pub, located on the lower level of the former Hotel Syracuse, was expected to debut at the St. Patrick's Parade on Saturday, March 11.

But hotel owner Ed Riley said the pub, named after his own Irish Setter, is still at least one month away from opening.

"Unless it was 100 percent ready and everything was spick-and-span, we didn't want to have guests come in and see it half-done," Riley said.

The hotel will instead focus on its St. Patrick's Post-Parade Party. Syracuse-based Irish folk band The Flyin' Column will perform in the Persian Terrace and fellow local musicians The Public House will play in the hotel lobby. Irish step-dancers will perform in the Finger Lakes Ballroom.

Both the parade and party start at noon.

The $10 admission also includes a buffet of family-friendly fare, such as pizza, hot dogs and coneys, and Irish food, including a build-your-own Reuben sandwich station.

Bubble watch: Gonzaga, St. Mary's help the Syracuse basketball cause (March 7)

Monday's games of note

Gonzaga 77, Santa Clara 68 -- In a game that was a lot closer than anticipated, Nigel Williams-Goss drained a critical 3-pointer down the stretch and the Zags advanced to the WCC title game.

St. Mary's 81, BYU 50 --St. Mary's, ranked No. 12 in KenPom, routed BYU late Monday. The Gaels have lost three games all season, once to Texas-Arlington and twice to Gonzaga. (Fun St. Mary's fact: Mahershala Ali, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for his work in Moonlight, played basketball for the Gaels.)

Tuesday's games of note

Wake Forest vs. Boston College, ACC Tournament (2 p.m., ESPN2): Wake has one of the best big men in the nation in John Collins. The Demon Deacons are a dangerous team and are making a serious late push toward the NCAA Tournament. BC has lost twice to Wake this season, by a narrower margin (85-80) when the Eagles were the home team. A BC upset would wobble Wake's momentum. (This serves as a reminder that the Eagles have not won an ACC game since Jan. 11 vs. North Carolina State.)
