Welcome to Stella, the Blizzard of 2017!

Stay indoors during the storm.
Prolonged exposure to cold can cause hypothermia.
Walk and drive carefully on icy sidewalks and roads.
Many injuries and accidents are caused by slippery conditions.
Before driving, let someone know your destination, route, and expected time of arrival.
If your car gets stuck, it’ll be easier to find you.
If you lose feeling and color in your nose, ears, hands, or feet, cover the exposed area, avoid rubbing your skin, and seek medical help immediately.
You may have frostbite.
When shoveling snow, take breaks and lift lighter loads.
Working too hard can lead to heart attacks.
Stay dry.
Wet clothes make you lose body heat, increasing your risk of hypothermia.

Remember a few years ago when the ACC and Big 10 scheduled several years of their conference tournaments in same locales?

The ACC was going to Washington, DC in 2016, and the Big 10 was going in 2017. In 2017 the ACC was going to New York City, and next year the Big 10 goes there too. So who won the first battle for these big east coast cities.

The ACC won round 1 in a landslide. These are the attendance figures pulled from last year’s ACC Tournament in Washington DC. That’s a total of 125,142.

8 of the top 12 Rated College Basketball games featured an ACC Team. » All Sports Discussion (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

It’s the ACC Tournament week, and Duke and North Carolina are meeting again – this time in the Friday semi-finals. That means a ratings bonanza for ESPN. Duke/UNC games were two of the four highest rated college basketball games this season, but it would have been big rating if UNC/Louisville were playing tomorrow too.

Pulled from SportsMediaWatch, 8 of the top 12 rated regular season college basketball games featured an ACC team. Five games were purely ACC vs ACC matchups. No other conference had more than two intra-conference games on the list. Duke led all teams with 5 appearances on this list. UNC was tied with Kentucky with 4. Louisville was on the list 3 times.

USC Basketball: Dick Vitale Says Syracuse Deserved Bid Over Trojans (reignoftroy.com; Artola)

ESPN’s Dick Vitale argued that Syracuse was more deserving of an NCAA tournament bid than USC basketball. Here’s why he’s wrong.

USC basketball was one of the last teams to grab a bid to the NCAA tournament on Sunday, set to face Providence in the First Four play-in game on Wednesday.

But not everyone is happy about the Trojans second-consecutive trip to the Big Dance. Among those is ESPN analyst Dick Vitale.

Vitale told FanSided Editorial Director Michael Collins that the Orange deserved USC’s bid:

“Syracuse won 10 games in the toughest conference of all, and I would have a comparison with Syracuse, and with Southern Cal. Not going to take away from Southern Cal — the Trojans, they won 24 games — but they were 9-8 in their last 17. They have two quality wins, UCLA and the win over SMU. And that’s it. So to me, if I’m on the committee, and I put those resumes next to each other, my choice is Syracuse.”

If you’re going to compare resumes between USC and Syracuse, you can choose to focus on two things: good wins and bad losses.

Vitale and Syracuse fans want the attention paid to their good wins compared to USC’s. And if you do that, the Orange clearly win the argument.

Syracuse notched wins over Duke, Florida State and Virginia, teams ranked No. 7, 10 and 17 in the official tournament seed ranking.

By comparison, USC’s best wins on the season came over UCLA, ranked No. 11, and SMU, ranked No. 21. It’s not a competition.

But it’s also not the end of the resume.

The selection committee looks at more than just a team’s best wins of the season. They look at a body of work, and it’s there that the Trojans earned their bid over the Orange with steady level throughout the season despite a major injury setback.

Orange Watch: 2017 only the ninth non-NCAA season under Jim Boeheim for Syracuse - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: It’s also been nine years since Syracuse last participated in the NIT, an event it’s come close to winning once in 12 previous all-time appearances. When the Orange (18-14) host Southern Conference member UNC-Greensboro (25-9) in the first round tonight amidst an expected March blizzard throughout the northeast (7:00 p.m. ET / ESPN), and with the delightful sense of humor displayed by all involved to bring last week’s verbal and social media combatants Boeheim and all-things Greensboro, N.C. together face-to-face, we also know this evening’s game is the beginning towards the end of the road of the unmatchable Boeheim era.

Here’s a look back at the only nine seasons that Syracuse did not compete for the NCAA national championship since Boeheim took the helm in 1976:

1980-81 – Bad timing was front and center following the Orangemen’s thrilling 83-80 triple overtime win over Big East rookie member Villanova in the conference tournament championship game played at the Dome, capping off three wins in three days. The relatively new Big East was still a year away from securing its automatic NCAA bid, and an 18-11 record simply didn’t impress the committee nixing Syracuse for an at-large bid (Villanova did get a bid), and causing Boeheim to whine loud and hard about being kept out of the NCAA Tourny (to a much more limited media universe that existed in March 1981), sound familiar? The ‘Cuse went all the way to the NIT title game just falling short to a Nolan Richardson-coached Tulsa team 86-84 in overtime.

1981-82 – Non-conference losses to Saint Joseph’s in the Dome, against Fordham on a neutral court, and at Ohio State contributed to a 15-11 regular season. One and done in the conference tournament (Boston College), followed by a win (St. Peter’s) and loss (Bradley) in the NIT ended this forgetful season.

Hoppers, Syracuse team to test values of Boeheim nights (greensboro.com; Staff)

Greensboro has a class A team in the South Atlantic. Their stadium holds 7499 and has electricity and running water.

That rivalry sparked by Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim’s comments about Greensboro as a host site for the ACC tournament continues to escalate.

Now that Syracuse will play UNC-Greensboro in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament, the cities’ minor-league baseball teams have entered the conversation.

The Syracuse Chiefs and the Greensboro Grasshoppers have entered into a friendly wager. Whichever team has the larger attendance on its Boeheim night — the Chiefs’ “Jim Boeheim (Added) Value Night” on April 7 or the Hoppers’ “Jim Boeheim (No) Value Night” on April 11 — wins the bet, and the losing team will make a donation to the other team’s charity of choice.

Highlights of the Syracuse promotion: Fireworks, a T-shirt giveaway, free admission for any fan who has a valid N.C. driver license. The Chiefs will donate proceeds from the 50/50 charitable raffle and $1 from tickets sold to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation.
